watching how the magnets pull them into position, jerking the whole quadrotor a couple of inches across kinda violently...
i wonder if the quadrotors had the power to pull the magnets apart again. I wonder if you put those magnets on 2 quadrotors, could they be programmed to controllably snap together in mid-air, keep flying, and then pull apart from eachother, all without crashing?
Kinda like those small redundant cooperative robots - but airborne.
@roidroid oh i guess this is kinda along the same line as what the team has already done with "a claw like gripper" on the quadrotor, multiple quadrotors can grasp things at once and fly around as if they are one unit.
But it'd be too slow to grasp eachother while flying.
It would be nice if you could get them to work along side of each other with collision detection instead of making them wait for the robot picking up a piece to leave before it picks up a piece. Other than that, very amazing technology.
Swarm intelligence will allow for fully automating the work force. 99% of all jobs can then be considered menial. With no jobs left except teachers and technicians, we will eliminate money and use the resources of this planet in a sustainable way to feed, clothe, and house this world.
definitely missing diversification of structuration process and actors: flying should be used to construct railway-type frame, to grow it with building, and nonflying build process should make the most much more effectively
@nickrose83 Exactly! This one is desgined to build a magnetic cages around anyone lazy enough to stay in one spot for an hour and a half. America's fat people are doomed! dun dun dunt dun dun.... dun dun dunt dun dun....
I find this very impressive but I still lack more info about how the actual flybots move about and with like say what system /program are they working on in order to complete the task they have.....
@imalwayswatchingu00 watch the video again and keep an eye out for all of those little white balls around the place. There's cameras that track them all in 3d.
The computer isn't tracking the blocks per-se. It just knows where to pick them up from (see the balls?), and once they are placed somewhere it just remembers where it puts them.
(the magnets help eliminate the finer accuracy problems by providing a "close enough" fastener)
@1RadicalOne I think they are... he mentioned the yawing motion to test if the connection has been made and for them to try again if not, that would not be needed if people were controlling it and could see if it was connected. Also look at the tree flyers working together at the end, that dose not look like three human controlled flyers.... but then again this is all a guess.
@PeXis No one seems to no what capitalism is nowadays. For instance they keep calling the current system "capitalism". Its not even close. Mercantilism, crony capitalism, fascism etc etc are good descriptions. But all the problems that are around today are the same ones Adam Smith complained about. If what followed from Smith was a concept called capitalism, yet the problems he complained about are still here, ie mercantilism. Then people should start complaining about mercantilism instead
@NicosMind must be convenient to wish away anything that doesn't fit in your ideal without realizing your idea is what causes these abhorrent forms of "capitalism" you say. The free market doesn't exist outside of government regulations and foundations; capitalism has inherent contradictions in it. Sowz.
@NwZ2 The "free market" doesnt exist at all and has never existed. Its always been highly manipulated and laissez faire has been corrupted to mean free reign of the private sector. It does not. What it means is no government interference such as private deals for special interst such as government granted monoplies, government bailouts & insurance, regulations written to favor them etc etc etc. This has been the criticism from day one. Remove these special favors has been Smiths philosophy
@NwZ2 plus to add to my comment "capitalism has inherent contradictions" thats not the capitalistic model. Thats human nature youre talking about. Something thats always been recognise. And something many systems dont even start with!!!
Economics isnt a hard science like physics but rather a soft science like psychology. Start with something like Ludwig Von Mises's Human Action and work from there.
@seeriktus Im just thinking of peak oil which seems to have no one talking about it. Instead of complaining about global warming as a need to find alternative fuels why dont they talk about the fact that oil production has peaked? Anyway im sure the second and 3rd generation(plus the ones that follow) are gonna be scary cool.

@refink33 doesn't matter. The computer could automatically have them fly into a charger when they get tired, and fly them back out again when charged. There is lots of them, they can work in shifts as necessary.
@SickBang Yeah it's completely computer controlled, no humans at all.
Notice all of the little white balls around. The computer visually tracks those balls with an IR webcam to know where things are flying, what orientation they are in, and where the things it has to pickup are.
I think the quadrotors also have some acceleration sensors on them too.
So things look pretty lethal. they may be the start of the impending robot revolution. It only takes one mad scientist or defective programing to start them off on their killing spree. I'm just sayin...
@nikobrown1990 They can adapt to that just fine. They are controlled by a computer that is visually watching them at all times, it's a visual feedback loop.
If they move - the computer corrects within milliseconds.
you know how awesome that would look to see a couple thousand of those things building a skyscraper? it may be a little unrealistic, but the idea still seems pretty amazing.
@DeagleBeagle I would imagine the reason we don't have quad-copters is that they wouldn't be fuel efficient compared to single blade helicopters, plus they would require a lot of R&D and expense to build.
@HooperNoodles i dunno about that. Since quadrotors have much finer control over movement, they would be able to move things around much faster and therefore spend less total time in the air.
Just think of how traditional helicopters hover for so long while they try to steady their movement when doing fine maneuvers such as landing, if they didn't have to do that it would save a lot of flight time and fuel.
If a traditional helicopter did the maneuvers in this video, it would take forever.
@blokazas666 Probably should think of redesigning the monetary system so that would not be a problem, good luck with that though, doesn't seem the people in power want to let go of their power.
My imagination goes beyond that... I can see a future where billions of "bees" (minatures of these robots) are building for us almost anything structure we need... or conquer the world. ;)
