actually the name derives from the 'birdcage Maserati's of the '60's which used a frame made up of a lot of small tubes, that well looked like a bird cage, hence the name. The Ferrari thing comes from there sharing some of the engine parts and design work. Quite honestly I would rather have a Ferrari.

@zefvandewetering I also wondered how the curve shape of windshield is made until I found a video on youtube. Search for "How it's made Windshields" and you will realize that glass is soften at around 700+ degree. When the glass is heated to a specific temperature, it becomes malleable, but not totally molten yet. Then it can be pressed into various shapes.

It is named after the 5 different racing "Birdcages" models in the late 50's, early 60's, that are all based on an intricate multi-tubular frame concept.

They contained about 200 chro-moly steel tubes welded together, hence the nickname "Birdcage" This method of construction provided a more rigid and, at the same time, lighter chassis than other sports cars of the time.

I may sounds awful but the name has its own history. The Maserati racing car Tipo 61 was built with space frame out of steel pipes, and it looked liked the bird cage. So many enthusiasts nickenamed the Tipo 61 ,"Birdcage". The Birdcage won the race many times because of its light, yet rigid steel pipe space frames.
