If someone blew me away with a .338 lapua, I would appreciate being shot with such a fucking badass caliber and mostly likely a nice expensive gun. Not to mention I wouldnt be in pain for very long as I would either bleed to death immediately or have my head vaporized.
This round was used when the world record for longest confirmed sniper kill was set at over 2300 yards, looks like it's pretty good against a water container too :)
The longest confirmed sniper kill was by Rob Furlong and the weapon he used was a Mcmillian Tac-50 with fires a 50 caliber bullet . However, the 338 Lapua magnum is no slouch. It was designed with a engagment evelope of over 1500 yards. to put that in perspective 1760 is a mile.
@rdsii64 Google it mate, the longest confirmed sniper kill is 2707 yards by CoH Craig Harrison, British Army, using an L115 Arctic Warfare sniper rifle (basically an L96 chambered for .338 magnum ammo) at 56X magnification.
He killed 2 taliban at that range in 2 shots, a true sniper.
@LordDiablo31 I completely forgot about that one. You are correct. While the 338 Lapua magnum was designed for 1000 yard material distruction and 1500 anti-personel Mr. harrison showed the world what one motivated precision shooter can do when it counts.
@LordDiablo31 56x magnification? Maximum magnification S&B PMII 5-25x56 gives is 25 and I don't think he even had that when he took the shot. At that distance the bullet drops so much that it's likely that he couldn't see the target trough his scope with max magnification even with adjustments as high as possible and even with 30MOA tilt in the scope mount...
@imgoinhuntin123 I understand. But, you don't really need a .338 unless you go for really large game. And even then a .30-06 will do alright. The .338 is a nice round to have, but it's kind of unnecessary except for the really large game
@valandilcamcacil People how have the money to spend on a Barrett 98B Don't do it because they need one. They do it because they can. I just wish I was one of the people who could afford such a find piece of firearms enginering.
Hey guys, i've been wondering, what does this DOT mean before the numbers? for example .338 Lapua magnum, why is the dot there? and what does the numbers show? is it the diameter of the bullet or what? tell me :D
@pROTPANDA one inch would be 1.00, half an inch would be .50 . a 30.06 is a .30, a 5.56 is around .223. bullet sizes in MM are the ones like the 5.56, or the 7.62, or 7.7jap. so to recap, .30, .50, .338 type numerals would be in fractions of an inch, where as 5.56, 7.62 Etc are in Millimeters.
I hunt with a 338 lapua magnum; and found it quite practical to hunt deer, reindeer or moose with.
Plus the fact is 338 lm is more a long range caliber; if you're pretty good at shooting you'll be hunting deer at 1000 meters away(if line of sight permits)
.338 Lapua was designed to launch a 250 grain bullet at 3,000 fps and penetrate 5 layers of military body armor at 1,000 yards and still make the kill. That is it's purpose.
The .338 Lapua Magnum will penetrate those 5 layers of military body armor from further away than 1000 yards. its desinged engagement envelope is closer to 1500 yards. at 1000 yards this round still has so much energy that it can be used to disable a large truck engine or detinate a bomb on an enemy aircraft while its still on the runway. I WANT ONE REALLY BAD lol.
I said it was designed to do that not that it couldn't do more. Those were the specifications that the military needed the round to meet or exceed which it did.
Holy "Cow" Moly! I have been wanting this caliber for a very long time for moose and dall sheep hunting. I am sold! good clip! thankz for sharing. Capt. Lance
"This is Your Brain on .338 LAPUA"
Oh man, and the thought that I was finally going to get my hands on one. Thanks for the heads up! I didn't know that .338s can do that to your head.
Oh the horror.
By the way, nice video.

The dot shows that the bullet is less than 1 inch in diameter. The .338 Lapua Magnum has a bore of 338/1000 of an inch.

im not sure id use that for hunting, it looks like it would blow a deer to peices. maybe you could use it if you only went for head shots.

get a .30-60 for hunting deer. This is made for bigger game. Elk, grizzly, moose, and even then, a .30-60 will do just fine in killing those.
