Someday I will find my grandson that was given away by a lost little girl and then I will make that little girl whole again...I love you boy, wherever you are. I know your mom is sorry. I am too.
This song is so profound and gorgeous. Heartbreaking at the same time. We are so lucky to have a live version of this from back in the day. So very lucky.
Thks for posting..so rare..I am Canadian..and I admit that her album Blue was a real masterpiece..my all-time favorite Canadian song is River...by Joni Mitchell
This song gets to me everytime. It is so heartfelt, and I think all parents can relate to that feeling, when releasing your child, embarking on a life long long journey: "There'll be icicles and birthday clothes, and sometimes there'll be sorrow". I know I can!
Wow, this song has come and gone in my life. Love it and maybe a best song (over 30 years). I feel sad when I hear It. But she turns the sadness into hope and joy for her child's outcome. We have that sadness, but upon releasing them into freedom, we have joy.
To my mind one of the saddest, melancholic songs ever written in the history of music. There is nothing that unusual in the opening guitar refrain but it instantly brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it start up. Her pain is etched in every note. What a song, what an artist. Thank you for posting this brilliant film.
VictorHagerman Thanks so much for "pushing the copyright envelope" and posting this. If you have it, could you also post Joni's singing of "Marcie" from the same performance? This was a NY club date in '69 if memory serves me correctly. Thanks again
"Kelly Green, be a gypsy dancer". That was an allusion to her daughter, whom she named Kelly. A big "wow" moment for me, because Ive never heard her end the song like that before.
This song is always difficult for me to listen to. The sadness she conveys is overwhelming. I mean, a lot of her songs are like that, but this is about the daughter she gave up for adoption. Extremely personal, and extremely sad. And, in reality, there hasn't been a happy ending. Making the story sadder still.
I can't seem to get over her and her music or begin to tell you how she's musically changed my outlook on music, love, even life itself. Thank god for youtube
This is about Jonis daughter born out of wedlock in 1965, whose name was Kelly -- the "Kelly green" Joni cleverly works into the last line of the song (and which was cut from the version recorded for "Blue.") It's poignant to see the fresh sadness breaking through in this performance, not to mention the anger, which tellingly flashes through at the 1:58 mark on the word "lies."
wow! Great to hear this brilliant song in a raw state of creation. 30 years later we can now understand why it belongs on BLUE, although it was written long before the album.
I will call my daughter little green, hope she has her moon in Cancer. My is in Capricorn because I was not nurtured my parents

It's hard to believe this footage even exists. Arguably the best singer-songwriter of all and at the top of her game . And what a song.....

The sadness in her eyes when she sings, "you sign all the papers in the family name" is so poignant.

very deep. I wonder if Kelly (now Kilauren) has seen this clip. definitely provides a look into Joni's intense experience of the time.
