  • tell me of another band that has written a rock opera !

the stones tried but the album never caught on

  • The look on Eddie's face is worth a million. Can only imagine what could have been going through his mind being up on stage on Letterman with one of his biggest musical influences...priceless. Pete is a musical genius...Eddie followed in his footsteps for sure...another musical genius...hats off to both. Thanks for posting*****

  • Watch Stu when the band breaks....he wants to be Pete when he grows up....NTTAWWT....lol

  • bedder with no vedder

  • @oiyabastard Vedder is Pete fan, don't y know?

  • I NEED to learn to play this song !

  • Yeah. A great, inventive guitar player no doubt...but not in the league of Mr Hendrix, Mr Page and Mr Rory Gallagher...the three greatest.

  • @priapus56 ...agreed...but he's an outstanding songwriter

  • @vicfra64 Agreed.

  • @tmsoccerbeast22 get a life.

  • played the crap out of this cd " Rough Mix " Pete Townsand & Ronie Lane back in 1983 thanks to a good old buddy " Johny McMullen " thanks johny boy

  • This is one of the best songs by Pete Townsend...very profound..

  • woah

  • Townshend-esque.

  • Nice save, Eddie. He accidentally sang the last line of the second verse at the end of the first verse. So on the second verse he just used the last line of the first.

  • great times, when Eddie don't sing folk songs...

  • @dwellercoc what do you consider a folk song eddie sang

  • Vedder looks almost too pretty to be a man...I like the long hair way better...

  • Well David Letterman is good for somethin' eh

  • Vedder is a bloody legend

  • @unemployable777 - legend, but he f'd up the lyrics - oh well

  • Phantasm ,greta artists

  • The version on the Maryville Academy CD is better. Eddie's a little more on key. Great post, though! RIP Ronnie Lane.

  • Oh, no. I did not know that Ronnie Lane had died.

  • Great to hear this again. One of my favorite lyrics. Eddie kind of blew it, though switching the last line of the two verses he sung, especially changing Sally into a guy...

Blond hair, what's that about. The guy is like a stoic and then he prissies himself up with blond curls. Weird, and the vocals were off.

  • I guess eddie just screwed the lyrics.. I mean... c'mon.. have you ever heard the original song? plus, he keeps going in and out of tune... pete otherwise keeps rocking hard!

  • @GUUUUU2099 pete once said that eddie was probably the best rock star off his generation ;)

  • @theachtungtree fact. but it doesn't make it true either. =)

  • @GUUUUU2099 then who fucking disagrees with pete's opinion? some guy who has franz ferdinand and oasis on his favs? hehe, nice try you douche ;)

  • @theachtungtree or just a guy with an opinion, sucker. =)

  • @GUUUUU2099 you're cool kid

  • Just have to say... Ronnie Lane.

  • For some reason this comment just brightened my day. :]

  • @HumboldtMike

     i agree! thumbs up

  • Great song & good God..., Eddie Vedder is off the scale HOT!

  • eddie gets to play with his hero yay!!!!

i love eddie and pete <3

  • why dont ya like eddie vedder?

*not trying to provoke ya ...im genuinely curious

  • eddie's vox sublime

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • rough mix a magic album have listened to it many many times wonderful superb ronnie and pete great duo

  • has anyone ever heard eddie and pete playing "gettin in tune" live at prince albert hall? had it b4 but lost all music in computer kabloom!! was great but cant find it anywhere.

  • No shit tsunami, know what you mean.

  • i was going thru a fu@#ed up time when i first heard this song..i lifted me up.i dig

  • i love to hear things like that

i just listened to this (version) for the first time yesterday and I wept...it's so moving

  • eddie & pete are great together. love this song!

  • great guitar tone man Pete is extremely underrated!!!!!!!!!

  • Townshend 'underated'? Not to WHO fans. Like Daltrey once said, 'I'm playin' with the best fuckin' guitarist in the world!'

    Right on Rog!

    LONG LIVE ROCK!

  • @TrickyTolles64 ..i love the who..they have been my favorite band since 69. Having said that, Pete isn't a great soloist. He hits alot of bad notes when he tries to solo using single notes....its seems as if he gets so intense that he flies by the seat of his pants..

  • this is a phenomenal tune! I'm surprised it wasn't a minor hit back in the day. But then it wasn't quite punk.

  • wtf? vedder has an earing in his left ear?

  • his hair is blone

  • Everything Eddie puts is voice on turns to magic.

  • this was already magic

  • Ronnie Lane!

  • LOVE THESE 2 GUYS!!

I had the privilege of meeting these fine gentlemen at a gig they worked Chi-town.

They signed a poster for my Dad and it was Pete's idea!!! Nicest folks in the biz!!!

  • Nice combo.

  • Eddie Vedder does an outstanding performance. It is so cool that he gets to play with his absolute favorite musician Pete Townshend.

"his whole life is just a cry of fear"

that line haunts me every time....

  • This is an excellent reading of one of Townshend's most heartfelt songs. Townshend's power-riffing on the guitar breaks and Vedder's truly sensitive and understated vocals make this particularly memorable. Also commendable is Paul Schafer's evocation of John "Rabbit" Bundrick's classic work on the Fender Rhodes. Simply gorgeous.

  • Paul really nails, really sweet!

  • This makes me miss Ronnie Lane.

  • Right on, I love this song!

  • Go Townshend!!!!!

  • KILLER! Who wrote this lane or pete?

  • pete, he wanted it to be a who song, but the band rejected it. God knows why

  • great song.. so fuckin qemotional... vedders vocals rock! just, just beautiful!

  • excellent version of one of the most underrated songs ever!

  • A beautiful Ronnie Lane song sung by a great in Vedder and accompanied by a legend in Townsend. AWESOME!

  • pete wrote it

  • AWW,doesn't he looks angelical with that blond hair? He is so pretty.I like him better with is own color, though, but what the heck,I'd still love him if he went molly red...

  • Another one of Pete's gems meant to be sung by someone else(Ronnie Lane), not necessarily by Rog. Ed does a great job - I approve. Cheers!!

  • Awesome tune from Rough Mix

  • that was ace. Eddie Vedder's vocals are sweet.

  • i cant quit playing this song....SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD!

  • Eddie looks funny.

  • Vedder is like a mix of Jim Morrison and Roger Daltrey, really. His voice has a lot of power to it, but he controls it well here.

And Townshend is awesome, as always.

  • Townshend and Vedder fit like a glove coulda had their own band ans it woulda killed.

  • far fukin out this was from a great album by ronnie and pete good to see it recognised, that's what makes the jam great they sing real shit and know where the root is!

  • SUPERB!

  • nice to see pete dust off this one and play it on letereman, but then again PT can do whatever he wants to. my question, why is that whole kletterman band playing too, do u really need 5 guitars for this song?

  • Because they're capable. That's the difference between Top 40 performer and musician. If you're good enough to play with Townsend ...

  • omg eddie is super hot as a blond but this is a damn good song and combination

  • marvellous

  • great!

  • cool

  • pretty darn cool !

  • VEDDERS MY HERO

  • Awesome!!!!

  • Go buy Rough Mix and thank me later!

  • Pete has been shuffleing the lyrics to this song around for 20 years now. I don't know why.

  • The show is called "The Late Show with David Letterman."

  • Eddie look funny with blonde hair. But I love him anyways.

  • rofl!!! did you hear that he messed up

"Finger on the pulse of every guy, but his whole life

    is just another try"

    but the real lyrics are

"A finger on the pulse of every guy

But deep in the night you can hear her cry"

    For shame lord Vadder...for shame

  • as much as vedder is a fan of townshends.. i'd imagined he felt worse than we did noticing it.. the who and pearl jam are my two favorite bands and i enjoyed this :)

  • Mess up? I think you messed up...

They changed a lot of things..

    example:

    The real lyrics.

"He thinks it's an easy going' high

But his whole life is just another try"

    On late show:

""He thinks it's an easy going' high

But deep in the night you can hear her cry"

They have changed it around. Even Mr. Townshend is doing the same thing. Eddie is known for making songs is own and editing existing songs.

  • Eddie Vedder does a lovely job. Both his and Pete's performances are passionate, but I don't believe they intentionally rearranged the lyrics...it doesn't make sense. 2nd verse: "Sally, seems to get bigger every day/she evens out in a contented way/a finger on the pulse of ever guy/but deep in the night you can hear her cry" It's not "...but his whole life is just another try" that's from the final verse, which Eddie also got confused. Still, it's really nice, and a tribute to dear Ronnie Lane.

  • Thank you, I thought I was the only person to hear the lyrics re-arranged... Pete did the album with Ronnie so Ronnie could get some cash to help with his medical condition. "Rough Mix" came out in '77. By '85, Ronnie was no longer with us. Ask Bill Wyman about it...

  • I think he passed away in 1997.

  • Ya Ed will do that from time to time...but he is the president of The Who fan club so you can't hate him for it:)

  • Rough Mix is well worth the purchase.

  • I love the version with Ronnie. It's all the more touching, when you realize that at the time he sang it he had just been diagnosed with MS.

Pete plays the guitar quite good these days, but strangely not on this track. He had just started playing electric again and he's still very reticent.

  • Great song!

  • eddie vedder makes my pants get tighter

  • That song is originally done by townshend and the late great Ronnie Lane. Rest in Peace Ronnie.

  • I am not a Pearl Jam fan, but Vedder's voice really suits Townshends tunes. There are some other who songs that Vedder has sung that sound beautiful

  • simply superb.

  • pete is eddie´s idol. eddie says many times that the who music saved his life

  • man, now pete can play the guitar.

i saw him rehearsing in mik jaggar's studio on tv.

    he was incredible.

    very nice upload.

    eddie as a blond. hehe

    he looked good.

  • thank you Pete for your life and your art.

    greeting from Argentina

    Peace

  • Another great Townshend song. Pete is a lyrical genius IMHO.

  • Eddie + Pete = wow

  • This is Cool stuff! HOT POOP!!!
