  • Well you can see in more detail what weather is over you.

Other TV services still have the icons....

  • I miss this weather map so much the new one is disappointing I think it could have been better in my opinion

  • Interesting that we see a lot less of the weather for northern France and the Netherlands than we did before!

  • Probably going to get lots of dislikes, but i like the new weather graphics; simpler to understand though i agree it could have been better

  • How is it stupid??? Its far more accurate and to be honest anyone who complains that the map isnt green or that sheffiels isnt shown on the map needs to get a life.

  • OMG. I'm Polish and my English teacher told me to listen to some BBC weather reports to learn something. Even if i'm quite good at english, I can't understand much. She talks too fast O_o

  • Before the blue/green screen they had a real map drawn on rice paper and hung on the wall, and with internationaly recognised meteorogically symbols understood only by experts and teens who had paid attention in school

  • I remember when this was launched. My nan claimed that the new weather reporting made her feel seasick!

  • at 4:30 in the morning on Monday the 16th of May, 2005 someone had nothing better to do than to tape the weather report.

  • @aaaarrrgggghh You're quite right. I didn't.

  • @aaaarrrgggghh miserable so and so....

  • shit its gonna rain?

  • this style is better!

  • Comment removed

  • borin hd to wtch this in enlish :(

  • Nothing wrong with this way...

The cam flies around in the new way and you end up feeling sick...

  • @TheIdentCritic yep agree nice dull brown country we have - I mean it is a weather forecast was it meant to be highly entertaining?! people moaning it has cloud symbols?! - now it zooms up and down the country and if you blink you've missed your forecast . The Midlands no longer exists - showers are blobs of blue - are they heavy, light , sleet showers - and what happened to hail ?!! both snow and fog are white, both frost and rain are blue, new map is shit shit shit!!

  • so long as Susan presents the weather, I don't mind what the map looks like :P

  • @weas430 - yes - agreed. That little swish of the hair... oh, man.

  • @spenyma wow! It actually

    FAILED.

  • Britain is green and pleasant again! If I was PM (Amongst other choice) This map would return!

New map misses big cities, and makes Britain look like Arizona.

  • what the hell have they got now?! they might as well of hired some tosspot holding pieces of paper up showing symbols with cities next to them!

  • i love the old forecast system,, there were loads more symbols that covered everywhere. the one they use now doesn't even have a symbol for north west england.

  • That's the weather forecast as I remember it. I'd like to see it done that way again.

  • Like this is if you clicked 4:30 in the description. Or even if you just clicked 4:30 just then. Or just right then again.

  • I miss the old layout :-(

  • @crazyboyxx i wish they would use a hessian-covered bit of cork with a charcoal outline of Britain coloured within by plant extracts. The symbols would be wooden and affixed with a pin. The weather girl would wear a toga and there would be real leaves in autumn and wildflowers in summer to adorn her hair. A harpist would sit to one side to interpret the weather musically. She would also wear a toga.

  • Susan looks so young here, she's much more attractive and sexy these days, her voice more matured, and pleasurable

  • Watching the weather these days is useless - the camera angle on the current BBC weather is angled so that the south of England looks twice its size - are they more important down there? I don't think there's a single settlement even listed on the map in the entire North West region, and they've left out the two biggest cities in the East Midlands (my own and Leicester), putting down Derby instead? The camera usually just flies over the midlands?!

  • I guess the real question to ask is how spending all that money on new flashier graphics, etc., actually helps to forecast the weather more accurately?

My BlackBerry has a little app that shows a cloud when it's going to be cloudy; rain, when it will rain; a sun... well you get the idea. It updates every 2 hours and is way more accurate than any forecast I see on TV.

  • @TheIdentCritic Toss! Who the hell did they survey ten year old's? Just an excuse to get more cash out of the licence payer. What next 3 D weather I bet it will happen soon just watch this space?

  • @TheIdentCritic It pisses me off when it gets to northern England the new map speeds up and rushes past the Midlands - why can't it stop at least for 5 seconds?! Plus the end summary it shows, London, Cardiff, Dublin and Edinborough - so basically fuck the Midlands

  • how the hell did scotland go from 21c to 12c in one day?!!!!

  • @aceface1980

Different airmass, it is possible in spring. 25C was recorded in the SE at the end of March 1968, by the beginning of April however, there was lying snow and temperatures barely above freezing.

  • i love her. shes so..

blah blah blah blah....blah blah blah blah...blah

    blah blah

  • That old weather system is stupid they only show belfast in my country

  • the new system is patently an improvement. stop being such fucking luddites all of you.

  • The most annoying thing about the (new) display is that it invariably misses out the North West of England - the 'camera' will pan up the right hand side of the country then on it's way back down will veer off to Northern Ireland before heading back to Wales. Blink and you miss NWE entirely!

  • Wahey! 3D weather. Its just like being outside!

  • What do people think the chances are of going back to symbols and clarity?

  • Oh who gives a shit, it's just fucking weather, and I wonder why the world thinks britons always moan! stfu!

  • Comment removed

  • Susan is hot!

  • hey we don't have 3d weather in here !

  • the new system is much better, its far more precise

  • i miss this

  • I'd honestly forgotten about these.

  • they replaced the green map to brown and symbols to blobs nice one BBC!

  • BBC weather forecast is just getting worse and worse most of the presenters don't mention the midlands, the stupid map that moves with shitty graphics and it does not give a clearer forecast it's absolute shit. I hate it so much when they say rain sleet and snow moving in (which???) Stay still you irritating 3D map!

  • On review the new graphics are better overall IMHO. They are much better for displaying cloud coverage and the extent and intensity of rain. But the cloud, rain and sunshine symbols from this era remain totally iconic.

  • @bluecobalt27

But you have to admit it was satisfying during the summers seeing those sun symbols plastered all over the map XD

  • @TheIdentCritic

haha, 'British desert'. I like that.

  • Exactly. I live in Sheffield, the 4th largest city in the UK and it's never listed. Also, the camera flies by so quickly there's barely time to note the weather there...

  • @RabidRaccoonUK

I don't think it is as big as 4th (more like 6th) but you are 100% right that Sheffield is probably the most neglected large city in weather coverage generally. It is almost always left out of charts and tables. You will often see weather for Leeds AND Bradford before they deign to give Sheffield coverage.

  • @RabidRaccoonUK you could have given the date whilst you were typing that dismissive retort. thain k on that my friend

  • This was when the MOD took over our weather ...now they just Chemtrail every nice blue sky day and the next few days are crap ....

you tube or Google MOD Chemtrails UK and read

  • The new style was a multi-million £ balls-up. You might be pleased to hear that BBC radio is considering going back to region-by-region forecasts, always in the same order, with no drivel. About time, too. Now all they need to do is fire that pillock Corbett.

  • The new graphics are absolute rubbish. And the colours - brown matt blue, yellow and dull green. Please! To think how much licence payers' money was wasted on that.

  • The evolution of the graphics was unfortunately accompanied by the dumbing-down of the forecasts. Current presentations are patronisingly science-free, grossly over-generalised and insultingly over-simplified. Many of the presenters are little more than clothes horses and have all the authority of a bowl of cat food! The idiosyncratic charm of the likes of Ian McCaskill has now been substituted by the downright oddness of Daniel Corbett ... dull and dismal (and I'm not talking about the weather)

  • How on earth they can say the vague blobs and shadows we have to put up with now means a clearer weather forecast I just do not know!

We've been putting up with the BBC's 3D weather for three and a half years now and its still as horrible as ever. As someone who hated the 3D graphics when they first appeared in 2005 even I thought there would be improvements over time, but they are still an stunningly awful as they ever were!

Bring back the symbols. Bring back simple weather forecasts!

  • Also, the new weather forecast map doesn't usually mention wind speed and direction, which are given lovely and clearly under the 'old fashioned' weather symbol system - we live on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean for goodness sake - wind should be an important part of the forecast.

And you're right about that pillock Daniel 'don't forget to take your umberella' Corbett. No, you tell me whether it's likely to rain and I'LL decide what precautions to take, you patronising ****er.

  • Why fix what isn't broke?

  • its called evolution

  • Those were the days. It cost millions to 'revamp' the BBC weather - and they made a balls of it. I don't need a 3D map, I know what rain looks like, I don't want to zoom round the UK, I don't need a rippling effect on the sea. I want to know what the weather will be like where I'm going to be. After 2 minutes of special effects I am usually none the wiser. And, above all, I don't want to have to listen to that rambling twat Daniel Corbett.

  • Daniel Corbett makes me laugh my head off when doing the weather. Such as strange man. :D

  • The new map the fog symbol is white, so is the snow, they look the same, the rain is blue and so is the frost, absolute shit new map

  • The beauty of these symbols was that they were evidently only a rough indication of where different weather types were expected. The new visuals actually give the impression that forecasters know exactly where it will be raining, sunny etc. at any given time - which they don't.

And how wonderful to be able to look at the whole country throughout and focus on the areas of interest.

  • susan i want to suck your fucking toes.

  • I miss these... You don't know what you've lost, until it's gone forever.

  • Goodbye good map, hello shit thing, annoying thing stay still and bring back symbols, the new map looks like a baby's scribbled all over it!

  • i loved this format, and hated the new graphics when they were introduced.

but now i think the new graphics are far superior to the ones featured in this video.

    this video is 5* nonetheless.

  • I preferred it when they actually placed those little symbols on the charts. They were magnetic or something.

  • The old magnetic symbols were even better when the backroom staff smeared them with washing up liquid so the didn't saty on and reverse the word FOG! Even now I still call it patchy GOF!!!

  • All this money spent and the weather hasn't improved at all! The weather is still crap in Summer and no Christmas snow! So what's the point? lol

  • Oh boo hooooo!

  • 2:47

Only in Britain would you have 3 weather symbols for clear and sunny weather, and 13 symbols for overcast, rain and snow!

  • I preferred this one, the new one is too dull/ dessert brown. I wouldn't mind it being green, aslong as it had a similar design to this and still had the iconic symbols :)

  • And what's so wrong with this? The new system apparently cost £5m. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY

  • I preferred this one. I can see Birmingham for more then one second here. :]

  • looks like they took notice, now they always mention the midlands, ho-ray!

  • Lol, I lived in England in 1978 and promptly recognized those symbols. Idk, but maybe they changed to 3d so chemtrails are better represented...

  • bit of both for me but those old maps will never get old

the 1st new system i saw was on the 11th april 2005

  • lasts nights weather, Rain in the south, Snow in the north, So I live in the midlands, so I watched the forecast and don't know what it's gonna do???!!!

  • Tell me about it! I live in Sheffield so I've got the same dilemma! :-P

  • @loonyblues it sleet :D lol

  • The new weather shows it more detailed. You don't really think that the weather which the symbol is showing is really going to cover that whole area do you? It's quite hard to explain

  • But the new always provides inaccurate data accurate so such precision is pointless. This one here actually gave better detail in terms of wind direction, speed and temperature whilst still giving a good overview of cloud and allowing the whole country to be viewed at once from a bird's eye.

  • i preferred the other old system i think Tv-am had, where they just stuck the clouds on the map - much more fun for a 5 year old! lol

  • Also most of the forecasts they mention east, west, scotland, but rarely say a lot of detail in the midlands

  • I wish they would put the symbols back on, I hate the new map, it is shit, snow symbol is just a blob of white, absolutely crap, and it is the same as fog, rain is blue so is frost, and it moving about is really annoying, whoever designed the new map needs shooting!

  • Note how they said they gave us more accuracy with the 3d version. Trouble is they're betting on their predictions being 100% right. Hence a general symbol of the weather is pretty much the same accuracy.

  • Why do we need the weather in 3D??? We know its going to be shit so why waste a load of money

  • I never thought it was that much of an improvement, I liked that you could see the isotherm pedictions better on the 'old' maps. I dislike the scale oddities too with a really big Devon and Cornwall and a tiny Northern Scotland! lol

  • What date did it happen?

  • Read the description. :P

  • Now we have 3d graphics for

the weather will be more hi-tech then ever

  • I'm so glad all those horrid icons have gone

  • Is it me, or was that David Duchovney at the end of the video?

  • not mulder, but similar

  • ....the end of the Licence Fee is getting closer and closer. The clock is ticking down. Tick,tock,tick,tock........

  • does the BBC have used fahrenheit in weather? if yes , when stopped to use it?

  • They still use it sometimes now, on TV, in summer, and on BBC local radio all the time, along with Centigrade.

  • We had placards, then chroma key, and currently touchscreens

  • This old style was much easier to follow and clear, I hate the new moving maps

  • Yes. makes Britain looka rid, and it seems nowhere exists between Birmigham and Edinbugh. Oh, and the whole thing is so patronising and baised towards South England

  • Exactly! I live in Sheffield, and it passes by so quickly you barley get to see what the weather is doing, yet as you say, as soon as it gets to London the panning slows right down.

  • I love the British accent!

  • That's just one British accent. ;)

  • yer the symbols are easyser to understand but the new one is more acurate...but i dont realy care

  • bring back the old forecast! We don't like change here in Britain you know. Remember when they tried to change the order of the fruits in tinned fruit? There was a national outcry. It was the same when AA men stopped saluting when members drove past.

  • Who cares that they changed the simbols?? THE WEATHER IS STILL TOLD!!! Get a grip!

  • i understood this version more!

  • hmm... exciting

  • Too much weather about these days, anyway...

  • The lady has a PhD in metallurgy.

  • Great that's made my day! So what the weather is not made up of metals its made up of gases and air. Question if she had that qualification and she was ugly as sin, would she be presenting the weather forecast? If you say yes think about it? How many ugly women do you know are presenting weather on the BBC or come to that any of the other TV channels?

  • Why have you taken such offense at my comments? Are you deficient in the area of physical beauty? The PhD came to mind because I myself am a PhD student (though not in metallurgy.) She's just a very beautiful lady and that's all I was conveying.I'm sorry if God did not bless you in the same way that He did Susan Powell. And yes, since you ask,I have seen some "ugly as sin" weather forecasters on TV,eg. Penny Tranter of the Beeb. Why do we have to be so politically correct all the time?

  • jamessmedley82 seeing that you have never met me you seem to think that I'm ugly, and that Penny Tranter was as 'ugly as sin' when she presented the weather. Who gives you the right to say who is attractive and who isn't? For somebody who is a PhD student you don't much in the way tact. Perhaps you should do a Phd in manners because I think you'd failed the exam. Ps God didn't gve Susan Powell good looks its down too genetics, and I would of thought a PhD student would of known that?

  • There's no link between doing a PhD and having tact or discretion. How on earth can these two disparate things possibly be related? They're not. And I just assumed you're not very good looking because of your phrase "Great that's made my day." There seems to be a great deal of indignant anger in that statement.

  • Sadly, I suppose your too young and immature to realize the correlation , and that these skills should be part of your degree. Thanks for admitting to the fact that you are a tactless indiscreet person. It's really refreshing to know that at least somebody in today's world, owns up to their character floors.

  • It's "character FLAWS." Tut tut.

  • If you see no point in this being uploaded, why are you constantly coming back to it to post comments on it?

  • RabidRaccoonUK: turner60 is just yanking your chain, trying to stir something up.

  • Well why not it makes life a bit more interesting.

  • Because its You Tube and I want to respond to the sados, who think this is some sort of national scandal or something along that lines.

  • To all of your who've given me a -5. Up yours you sad ohs!

  • This older style was much better.

  • Yeah 'if it's not broke don't mend it' as the saying goes.

  • Blimey I miss these...

  • there you go. here you can see what the weather is like all over the uk throughout the forecast. these days you get about a second to see your area before it glides over to somewhere else in a pointless flight simulation. style over function. bring back the old way!

  • prefer the old maps, at least you could understand what was happening, rather than the new rolling desert map.

  • good old weather forcasts

  • bye bye!

  • the new system is miles better!

  • Who cares? It's only a weather forcast for fuck sake so what's the fuss about? If they had only had a weather board with a map of Britain like they used to have years ago, that would do me fine. Anyway, stick your head out of the window if you want to know what the weathers going to be like.

  • new mao is gr8 n easy

  • The "old" symbols were clear and communicative. The pressure charts were also useful. Now we get a dumbed down map coloured the same as a Saudi Arabian desert and an excruciatingly irritating roving camera that gives less info than before. This is classic style over substance dim wittedness and change for change's sake, to suit some new editor's personal whim at the expense of clarity.

  • what an you actually expect the land is green everywhere? stop been an ungrateful twat.

  • Does anyone else remember MIchael Fish and his handful of magnetic symbols? I always wanted to slap one of those on.

  • Halcyon days in Pres A - and Link 110 cameras. Those magnetic symbols occasionally fell off the charts. In those days the presenters were all qualified meteorologists - I'm not sure if they are now?!

  • I think that was the appeal - waiting to see if one would fall off! I have a weird sense of amusement - I've had to resort to watching You've Been Framed, which is way too predictable, hahaha

I also used to sit close to the TV and see if I could trip off Richard Whitmore's newsreading attire. Woo for crazy strobing check suits!

  • Yes indeed! Where have all the professional broadcasters' gone (inc. Richard Whitmore)??

Sadly, Bob Dougall & Peter Woods are no longer with us. Happily, Richard Baker & Ken Kendall still are. And, what about Jack Scott, Jim Bacon & Barbara Edwards ?

Sophie R & George A are the best we have at the moment!

  • Richard Whitmore has been writing and acting, so I believe. I found a great list on wikipedia, c&p List_of_former_BBC_newsreaders_and_journalists into the search box!

  • Thanks for that. There were so many good broadcasters' worthy of note who achieved 'celebrity' status in their own right, and yet most of whom would insist; they're just doing a job!

  • Replaced by bimbos like Kate Silverton. If she reads the news I switch off. Bring back the likes of Moira Stuart and Philip Hayton!

  • Indeed, hear here.

  • Those symbols are now on display at the Science Museum in London. I got to photograph them, but sadly they were behind glass so didn't get to touch them. Would be nice if they wheeled out one of those old maps and let you have a go at presenting the weather 1970s style yourself...

  • I have a funny feeling that they've done that in the past, one of those BBC Exhibition thingies, they'd have muffin the mule in a glass case and all that

  • Christ that's sad! Don't you get out much these day?

  • Are you refering to me posting the video?

  • new map is crap, BBC obviously think anyone living north of Birmingham don't need to see their weather

  • the media in this country is all based in london, so they tend to refer to other parts of the country as if they are the provinces

  • This style of weather reporting showed temperature, wind speed and direction and a greter outlook across Europe too - putting the weather into context. Now we have a "desert map" - or is that climate change scorching the earth?

  • Well send a petition to the BBC then.

  • If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  • Comment removed

  • Problem with the old system it wasn't specific enough, but I don' t get the deal with the brown UK though!

  • I miss the green UK and sunny symbols

  • That's not the 'traditional map' - it was merely a late 80s yuppie revamp introduced when the magnetic symbols were scrapped

  • That's not the 'traditional map' - it was only introduced in the late 80s after all when the magnetic symbols were scrapped.

  • "Traditional" as in the fact that they where still using the symbols at that point, which they don't now.

  • Heartbreaking! We had it so good, for so long and then the BBC ruined it!

  • The old map... I remember that!

    21 degrees... I remember that!

  • ahh... the good old days!!! - where they showed a lush beautiful UK!!!
