  • Stunning! Rabbath his teacher played the Paris opera so it is possible to master both orchestral style and this style. But to get to the ultimate level in either most people would need to specialize. Also, one needs several basses. The instrument here with a high 'c' string is set up for this type of playing and would probably not do well with orchestra. Bow is different also! Light, quick and facile. IMHO Symphony bow needs to be heavier in most cases.

  • wow

  • That's absolutely incredible!!!

  • Does he have a high E on?

  • high C, three octaves playable

  • The action on his instrument is incredibly low!! Just goes to show, it's all about touch, and knowing your instrument........'

  • It;s like his right arm is made form rubber...

    How is he doing that?

  • Renaud Garcia é um monstro! Genial...

  • Hey where can I get sheet music for this. I play bass and I think this would be a fun challenge

  • is the most beautiful, perfect and precise that I heard in my life, I relax completely and I realized how much lasted until the end, congratulations to the bass are in my opinion for that interpretation, the best bassist of all time, I'm studying music, bass player and I'm longing to be like you with that interpretacion.felicidades are the best

  • That is amazing. I play the viola and I always thought the basses had boring and monotonous music. Apparently not. This is a beautiful piece that raises the expectations of ever bass player as well as the admiration.

  • @Coyotewolfcanfly

While i agree this is wonderful music, your ignorance is showing.

Boring and monotonous is what helps the orchestra/ensemble/group/band/duo/trio sound good, bass is an instrument which is selfless and supporting, this kind of playing, in most contexts is overplaying.

Similarly, have you ever seen a semi-trailer in an F1 race?

  • @stfrutiger6

I'm a bassist myself man. I mainly gig on electric and upright playing jazz, but do some orchestral work too. I'm not trying to restrict anything but there are two big things about the bass:

    a) It is physically difficult to play. With only a single tone range without shifting, and requiring 8 times as much pressure as a cello to press down a string, there's no arguement that it's hard. That's why i'm so happy when I see people like Edgar Meyer doing what he does.

  • And

    b) Sometimes you're a soloist, sometimes you gotta stop being selfish, put the ego aside and help out the group.Personally, I enjoy bowing 32 bars of low F at ppp, because I know that I'm being as supportive as I can for the rest of the orchestra. When I was young a realised my idea of an excellent musician (technically) was one who had chops to burn but only used them it was called for. As a bassist who wants work, you gotta know when to hold it down.

  • It's great experience for me)))

  • nice

  • Stunning.

  • Great playing, but I abhor the camera work because I want to see his technique as clearly as possible - especially his left hand!

  • Rabbath compendium.... un montón de Poucha dass

  • I know nothing about the instrument but to see him perform live made me appreciate it. What a genius!

  • This is the future of bass playing

  • genial,juste GENIAL !

  • wow!!!! Absolutely beautiful! :)

  • It sure is easy to throw stones at someone who's trying to stand up an actually DO something, 1mrbassman. Let's see a video of what you have to offer!

  • I have one word for Rabbath players when I'm on an audition jury -- "Next"

If you want an orchestra job don't get caught up in the low action style, sissy-boy register of the instrument. If you can't play the opening of Mahler's 2nd Sym. ff sfz, all this upper stratosphere stuff won't get you a paying job.

  • @1MRBASSMAN the difference between Garcia Fons and Old-Fashioned-High-Action-Macho-Bassists like you, is that he's playing for the sake of art, as opposed to simply playing for a paying job.

  • @1MRBASSMAN That's incredibly ignorant. I don't know why playing in the upper register is considered sissy-boy stuff.

  • this is really inspiring!

  • Un autre hommage de Renaud Garcia Fons a Ostad Elahi...

  • very nice !

  • beautiful

  • ♪**•♫♪•*"*• ♫♪•¸¸.•.¸¸.•*•¸¸♪♫.•*"*•♪♫•¸¸.•'´¯))♪♫

  • He isn't playing the instrument. He IS the instrument.

  • I believe that when one plays double bass good, I mean good on THAT level, it means their tehnique is absolutely 100 % perfect. So, as a cellist. I learn from him.

  • Extraordinaire, et magnifiquement filmé !

  • Celestial!!!

  • Truly ground-breaking; I have a new hero! This tears it, I'm getting The "Art of the Bow" and learning as much about Francois Rabbath (Renaud's teacher) as I can!

  • in the beginning, it sounds like an oud :)

    AMAZING <3

  • Amazing!

  • very nice music!...thanks!

  • Best bassist EVER! This man is just a genius. It sounds so gorgeousss.

  • Renaud Garcia Fons, from Catalunya.. I saw him yesterday in Ancona, Italy

  • quien es el que musico???¿ alguien sabe???

  • el culiao pa la caga!!

  • nice

  • WOW!!!

  • ¡¡IMPRESIONANTE!!

    Buenísimo.

    ¡Me encanta!

  • Amazing. How does he achieve such a tone, its almost like a koto or something oriental!

  • *dies with happiness* Thats why I play Bass!

  • If i could be half the bassplayer he is, i'd be pro by now XD

  • Beautiful & Amazing!

  • Amzaing skills... He sure knows how to drive his instrument :P

Wish he could be my teacher !

  • Absolutely Beautiful! This is In Mahur Dastgah or Mode which is the music of the western Iranic People namely Luerstan and Kurdistan region. The Saks who migrated from this region to Western Europe and Ukrain in particular took this tradition with them.

This Mode also exists in Indian Ragga with a different name! it sounds also like Irish Music if you listen carefully! Beautiful Music Thank You Sir!

  • lo adoro..

  • BELOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • I dont know how someone can play with action that high.

  • Fantastic playing but I hate it how the cameraman can't stay still. He completely ruins it by never letting us see how Renaud is playing.

Bravo!

  • breathtaking

you think he will play my birthday party?

    :)

  • incredible, this is in Mahur, an oriental mode close to major scale. never imagined this is possible with a dbass.

  • What are the differences between this Mahur mode and a major scale? I've never heard of it.

  • "Mahur is a mode (dastgah, maqam, mayeh) in Persian Classical Music. The mode is identical to the Western major scale."

  • Wow! beautiful and astounding! I've never heard anything like it!

  • Amazing!

  • this is amazing and that wwould be incredibly hard to do what he does and he makes it look easy too easy the staccato bowing was amazing and that sounded low viola high cello range

  • Excellent! This proves that the bass can be a great solo instrument.

  • what is that technique in the beginning called? for the life of me i can't get it down.

  • This guy, I have no words. I don't think there is a bass player anywhere in the US where I live as good as him. Not even Edgar Meyer is a match for him. I have to go to Europe where the true bass masters are.

  • year!

and there are also Bruno Chevillon, and Jean-Paul Celea!

    welcome in France...

  • Paul Ellison is pretty good, so is Etienne Lafrance(Quebec). Also, if you actually do go to France, go see Rabbath. He is Fons' teacher.

  • @pizzicato16

    Damm strieght !!

  • @pizzicato16 My thoughts exactly, even though Edgar is a giant himself! Edgar may match or better him compositionally though... I can't imagine clicking "dislike", but to each his own?

  • man, you are truely a gift to the world!

you combine betwin two worlds, east and west in the most bright and magnificant way. you have a soul of an artist, if not that of an angel.

  • Bonjour,

    Yves

  • like john mclaughlin playing bass

  • seen his concert about half a year ago.. still impressed, amazing music & musician

  • Utterly gorgeous. Fantastic bass work! I wish I could play my violin like this.

  • High C

  • incredible... beautifull; I can't get how he tuned his double bass though; it's not a normal tuning...

  • High C

  • It actually is the normal tuning for the lower 4 strings but the first string is the high C string.

  • actually its a high b string

  • davvero indimenticabile...pochi concepiscono così la musica

  • A masterpiece by a great master.

  • Fantastic!!!

  • hm. 5 string bass. havent seen a lot of those....

  • Saw this on a tv at 3.00am in a hotel in Paris in Feb 07 . . amazing . . got a lot of his stuff now . .

  • i know him personally a real good friend of the family. he practically tought me how to play bass!!! =]

  • If you learn harmonics

    yeah it does sound real...

but this a music video so they record over it...

  • As a musician you seem to have a very closed mind to new concepts, but you are entitled to your own opinion.

  • My comment was in response to bassozgur if anyone was wondering not garcia fons. Love him!

    Viva a música !

    Bass 4ever !!!

  • The Everest !!!!!

Nobody play better than this guy even the greatest (stanley clarke, nhop or edgar meyer) every note is right ! and the sond !

    Music is the best

  • Really good!!!

  • Great, I`m double bass player to, but I can only dream about playing like HE! Wow!

  • Amazing. Awesome. Absolutely fantastic.

  • wouaw! great song!

  • his name is Francois Rebbath, make me sleep

  • Thats cool, do you use the Rabbath method? I am a double bass player too and use the Rabbath method. Thanks again

  • Pls, can you explain what Rabbath method means? Thanks

  • R. Garcia Fons' bass teacher is a VERY famous bassist that has his own method of learning bass, his name is Francois Rebbath

  • Francois R"a"bbath...! "Nouvelle technique de La Contrabasse" or "New Technique for the Double Bass" excelent books but worthless without a good teacher. Look for the DVD the art of the bow... Really great

  • Amazing! Thanks a lot!

  • Hey, mo problem, I'm db player . Zoki
