Stunning! Rabbath his teacher played the Paris opera so it is possible to master both orchestral style and this style. But to get to the ultimate level in either most people would need to specialize. Also, one needs several basses. The instrument here with a high 'c' string is set up for this type of playing and would probably not do well with orchestra. Bow is different also! Light, quick and facile. IMHO Symphony bow needs to be heavier in most cases.

That is amazing. I play the viola and I always thought the basses had boring and monotonous music. Apparently not. This is a beautiful piece that raises the expectations of ever bass player as well as the admiration.
While i agree this is wonderful music, your ignorance is showing.
Boring and monotonous is what helps the orchestra/ensemble/group/band/duo/trio sound good, bass is an instrument which is selfless and supporting, this kind of playing, in most contexts is overplaying.
Similarly, have you ever seen a semi-trailer in an F1 race?
I'm a bassist myself man. I mainly gig on electric and upright playing jazz, but do some orchestral work too. I'm not trying to restrict anything but there are two big things about the bass:
a) It is physically difficult to play. With only a single tone range without shifting, and requiring 8 times as much pressure as a cello to press down a string, there's no arguement that it's hard. That's why i'm so happy when I see people like Edgar Meyer doing what he does.
b) Sometimes you're a soloist, sometimes you gotta stop being selfish, put the ego aside and help out the group.Personally, I enjoy bowing 32 bars of low F at ppp, because I know that I'm being as supportive as I can for the rest of the orchestra. When I was young a realised my idea of an excellent musician (technically) was one who had chops to burn but only used them it was called for. As a bassist who wants work, you gotta know when to hold it down.
It sure is easy to throw stones at someone who's trying to stand up an actually DO something, 1mrbassman. Let's see a video of what you have to offer!
I have one word for Rabbath players when I'm on an audition jury -- "Next"
If you want an orchestra job don't get caught up in the low action style, sissy-boy register of the instrument. If you can't play the opening of Mahler's 2nd Sym. ff sfz, all this upper stratosphere stuff won't get you a paying job.

@1MRBASSMAN the difference between Garcia Fons and Old-Fashioned-High-Action-Macho-Bassists like you, is that he's playing for the sake of art, as opposed to simply playing for a paying job.
I believe that when one plays double bass good, I mean good on THAT level, it means their tehnique is absolutely 100 % perfect. So, as a cellist. I learn from him.

This Mode also exists in Indian Ragga with a different name! it sounds also like Irish Music if you listen carefully! Beautiful Music Thank You Sir!
