This type of dance is called KATHAK. Every single gesture helps narrate the story, it is truly amazing. Even the eyes and the eyebrows are part of the dance. DEVDAS is a pure jewel, a masterpiece. No wonder it took 2 years to shoot! Every take, every costume, every camera angle, every light effect, every single detail is perfection. This movie will carry you to a different land and a different time. This is the very definition of entertainment.

one of the reasons why devdas was successful was because of madhuri....although she had a small role, she delivered a fine performance and made the most of her limited screen time... and of course, the dancing was spectacular... imagine if someone else took her role... it would be a disaster ... the only other person that comes to mind is Rekha, but she was too old at the time of production, but i think madhuri is the only one who can do justice to dance to be honest

The dance is appreciable, but according to me the most beautiful part is the music. It's the beauty of Indian classical music - pristine, pure and immersing - developed over thousands of years. Starting with Sai Subbulakshmi sisters, The Travancore sisters ( Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini) Vyjaaynthimala, KUmari Kamala, EV Saroja and L. Vijayalakshmi. These were and are the renowned dancers. Infact Kumari Kamla, Padmini and Vyjayanthi were known as ALL India DAncers. a title given by Her Majesty the Queen herself. Please check the history of classical dancers

Interestingly now you are saying sridevi is a better performer, that is also your opinion which is not popular at all, Sridevi has more more films, with more language what is a different issue, Nandita das has done 11 languages, while sri hired others voice for many of her films. There are many actors who have done only one language, but yes in terms of experience she has more. Madhuri is very subtle and has immense range and never stereotype in style.

@shimlaootey i disagree with you. Sridevi is an accomplished performer. Even when she was 16 years of age, she did movies and performed so well, especially in the emoting areas. Nandita Das is talented but she may not be able to pull off many roles for eg. comedy etc. Sridevi was a complete actress and so was Madhuri and many more earlier than them as well.

Legends like Ashok Kumar and M.F hussain has said she is the most complete, even Vyjantimala said the same about her (about actresses of modern time). The combination of all these does matter.

Vyjayanthimala was taught by a lady that was taught when the modern dancing had no influence on the traditional indian dancing. My opinion is that dancing wise there can't be no comparision because both of them are from different time periods.
everyone has different opinion but it is true that Madhuri is the most famous among all the greats, she is a combination of fantastic actress, dancer, beauty and superstar. She is much more natural, subtle yet powerful than most others. And why she has to be vyjantimala? She is good enough in her position two good dancer or actresses should never be compared. Sridevi is a much limited ability actress than Madhuri. Madhuri is more complete than others.

She is one of the best but far from the rest of her predecessors! Madhuri also was quite repetitive in her selection of roles in some movies especially in the 90's. I still love her, nonetheless.

Aishwarya is the most dignified actress today in an industry that's quickly becoming sleazy. The dance is appreciable, but according to me the most beautiful part is the music. It's the beauty of Indian classical music - pristine, pure and immersing - developed over thousands of years. This one is mostly based on raga Basant - an evening raga of Spring, often associated with the love between Radha & Krishna.

Madhuri is an excellent dancer and a very competent actress. She is indeed one of the shinning diamonds in the crown of Indian cinema. Madhuri Dixit is certainly one of our Diamonds shining in the crown of Indian cinema, just like Sridevi, Hema, Vyjayanthimala, Padmini and many more. That cannot be denied. Madhuri is a natural born actress with a dancing skill that is so enigmatic and energetic. Still, she is no Vyjayanthimala or Padmini. They were much better dancers than her. Likewise Ash is no Madhuri. Madhuri of course is definitely the better actress and dancer. Wasn't Sridevi a better actress too? See the difference!

@tonynaso i dont think sridevi was a better actress or dancer than madhuri...vyjayanthimala may be a better dancer but madhuri has more personality on the dance floor....the only two actresses i would say dance better than madhuri are meenakshi sheshadri and vyjayanthimala......acting wise madhuri is better than both of them...shes also a better actress than sridevi, hema, rekha...she's in the same league as meenaji, shabana azmi, smita patil....

@shimlaootey No this wrong! Please look at all the previous dancers of Indian cinema and you will find better dancers of the past. Starting with Sai Subbulakshmi sisters, The Travancore sisters ( Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini) Vyjaaynthimala, KUmari Kamala, EV Saroja and L. Vijayalakshmi. These were and are the renowned dancers. Infact Kumari Kamla, Padmini and Vyjayanthi were known as ALL India DAncers. a title given by Her Majesty the Queen herself. Please check the history of classical dancers

She started as kid in tamil and other languages and her experience is a lot more. See, Khalid this is where you your information lacks. No doubt, you are a great uploader of all the classics, but its all your choice and your opinion. Bear in mind, you are not the only Bollywood fan around who thinks he's the ultimate judge.

Interestingly now you are saying sridevi is a better performer, that is also your opinion which is not popular at all, Sridevi has more more films, with more language what is a different issue, Nandita das has done 11 languages, while sri hired others voice for many of her films. There are many actors who have done only one language, but yes in terms of experience she has more. Madhuri is very subtle and has immense range and never stereotype in style.

@shimlaootey i disagree with you. Sridevi is an accomplished performer. Even when she was 16 years of age, she did movies and performed so well, especially in the emoting areas. Nandita Das is talented but she may not be able to pull off many roles for eg. comedy etc. Sridevi was a complete actress and so was Madhuri and many more earlier than them as well.

Sridevi was a superstar actress who could pull crowd like Madhuri, these are the only two real female superstars, Madhuri has 11 major awards and 26 nominations for acting, sridevi has only 2 awards and some nominations. Madhuri has ^ times more adjusted BO collection than sridevi and much more BO impact. Madhuri became best actress ever in many formal list.

she became actress of the millennium by star TV and filmfare mega poll, she became best actress ever by zeenews. even recently STAR made a survey among directors to tell their fav actress, and Madhuri became the most number of times there. Legends like Ashok Kumar and M.F hussain has said she is the most complete, even Vyjantimala said the same about her (about actresses of modern time). The combination of all these does matter.

no ash does not have many awards for good acting, even in the west they criticized her acting. But Madhuri had thaqt form many deffenrt source from film, media, critic all.. all those together say something. And ashgot the award for the decade, Madhuri or no other old actress even were considered, while for Madhuri's one it was ollwed by likes o Madhubala, Nargis.

Just because they are my favs that doesnt mean they are the best. Madhuri is a way more competent actress in my books than either one and that's my opinion

Vyjayanthimala was taught by a lady that was taught when the modern dancing had no influence on the traditional indian dancing. My opinion is that dancing wise there can't be no comparision because both of them are from different time periods.

everyone has different opinion but it is true that Madhuri is the most famous among all the greats, she is a combination of fantastic actress, dancer, beauty and superstar. She is much more natural, subtle yet powerful than most others. And why she has to be vyjantimala? She is good enough in her position two good dancer or actresses should never be compared. Sridevi is a much limited ability actress than Madhuri. Madhuri is more complete than others.

@shimlaootey It doesnt matter which form of classical dancing, whether Bhartnatyam, Kathak or kuchipudi. And Madhuri is definitely not the best dancer in Indian cinema. She is one of the best but far from the rest of her predecessors! Madhuri also was quite repetitive in her selection of roles in some movies especially in the 90's. I still love her, nonetheless.
