That's very nice for her to have her wanted, loved children. All children should be wanted and loved. She neglects to address that many people do not feel the same way about parenthood as she does. Would she force a wailing baby into the arms of a teenage mother who has nothing, no means to feed this baby and no means to clothe or house it, terrified? I haven't yet studied enough to have made a decision about Bachmann; but at the very least, I respect her opinion & the passion she has for it. Bachmann neglects to tell us that the "coloured" women having abortions are from lower-class neighborhoods where a much larger percentage of pregnancies are unplanned. this is due to less education and less access to safe methods of intercourse. Bachmann takes an ideological point of view on what is actually a social issue.

Some think it begins with fertilization. Some think it begins in the third trimester with the dawn of consciousness. Some think it begins at birth, when a child is for the first time physically independent from its mother. Depending on what you think defines a human being, any of these can be true.
@NetAdmin08 The point is that the issue we're running into is that we know we value human life, but it's not quite so clear what aspect of an organic being makes them a living human. Personally, I tend to value consciousness and self-awareness. So I, for one, wouldn't object if we banned abortion from the third trimester onwards, because at that point, a fetus is conscious, and I see that as the key factor. I personally don't believe that aborting a few unconscious cells is wrong.

I think that there are a number of issues that need to be addressed, and that nothing is entirely clear-cut here. Moreover, I think that calling your opponents murderers is going to cause you and your side more harm than good. Would she force a wailing baby into the arms of a teenage mother who has nothing, no means to feed this baby and no means to clothe or house it, terrified? It saddens me that some people have to be so hateful when someone disagrees with their views. I haven't yet studied enough to have made a decision about Bachmann; but at the very least, I respect her opinion & the passion she has for it. She at least expresses compassion for people in difficult circumstances who might choose to have an abortion; which gives me far more respect for her than for those who spew hatred for any reason.

Bachmann neglects to tell us that the "coloured" women having abortions are from lower-class neighborhoods where a much larger percentage of pregnancies are unplanned. this is due to less education and less access to safe methods of intercourse. Bachmann takes an ideological point of view on what is actually a social issue.

Some think it begins with fertilization. Some think it begins in the third trimester with the dawn of consciousness. Some think it begins at birth, when a child is for the first time physically independent from its mother. Depending on what you think defines a human being, any of these can be true.

@NetAdmin08 The point is that the issue we're running into is that we know we value human life, but it's not quite so clear what aspect of an organic being makes them a living human. Personally, I tend to value consciousness and self-awareness. So I, for one, wouldn't object if we banned abortion from the third trimester onwards, because at that point, a fetus is conscious, and I see that as the key factor. I personally don't believe that aborting a few unconscious cells is wrong.

I think that there are a number of issues that need to be addressed, and that nothing is entirely clear-cut here. Moreover, I think that calling your opponents murderers is going to cause you and your side more harm than good. People are trying to reach an understanding here, and attacking people for their opinions is not healthy.

@brender1976 Abortions performed because of rape make up a very small fraction of abortions, so it's ridiculous that it's so often mentioned in pro-choice arguments. As I said before, I believe it's fundamentally selfish to consider a human not worthy of life simply because of inconvenience for the mother, regardless of how harsh. If doctors are adamant that the victim's health is in serious danger and recommend an abortion, it's sometimes acceptable. A healthy victim has no excuse.

A woman's decision to terminate her fetus because she is not comfortable with being pregnant is a selfishness that results in the death of a completely innocent life. Be thankful your mother didn't consider you a burden.

Ummm... there are many unwanted children in America. Many babies given up for adoption never get adopted. And, there is a huge difference between innocence and ignorance. The 70's weren't innocent, she just had an apparently ignorant upbringing. Nobody will ever tell me that a 14 year old girl who is still a child should be forced to go through with a pregnancy. A woman who has been raped should not be forced to carry a child. *That* is so wrong.

This could imply they had no alternative or felt pressured by "abortion culture" or somesuch, but of course it's neither: it's advocation of disempowerment. Very right-christian. Some people choose to have an abortion because they aren't stable enough financially or mentally. I don't see why that's not reasonable. Those people are saving a child from an unfortunate life. The last thing we need is to add more messed up people to this world. Aside from that, I'm totally not voting for her as president because she hates gays.

I don't agree with what this lady is saying. The idea of an abortion is kind of sad, but she isn't thinking realistically. She makes it sound like a woman only produces one egg in their entire life and if you choose to get an abortion you'll never get the chance to have a child again. Some people shouldn't have children, period. There are parents out there who choose to not have an abortion and they end up abusing that child or worse, killing them.

Two ethics at play: Dignity of Life versus Quality of Life. A Dignity of Life ethic says that all human beings have a right to live because they are human, a condition that results from the joining of two human gametes (sex cells), the sperm and the egg.
The Quality of Life ethic says that whoever happens to be in power gets to set an arbitrary standard that determines who gets to live and die. (Ex: "Unplanned" means unworthy.) Might makes right. Nothing is consistent. No one is safe.
