I'm sorry to truelly understanding of this droping and body one could only be realize if one could obtain or reach this state of meditation. What I'm saying below is from my own experince through my own meditation.
Ok I'll try to explain the droping of body and mind, What he's saying is that once the body and mind are balance meaning that once the body and mind are still, clear, calm, peace, empty then consciosness transparance through. And once that happen we will see that in true reality mind and body both doesn't exist only consciousness remian.
Could it possibly "be" that wanting to drop the body and mind (seeking ways to control such a thought) is getting in the way of dropping the body and mind?
You can't control tought, try to stop it and it will come back instantly. What you can do is let them pass without clinging to it. Let go of your thought =)
The Zen master tried very hard to get the questioner to understand the ultimate view of zen - there is no difference between a buddha and a sentient being. But they just couldn't get it, so he had to resort to the conventional view - the difference is balance. Some people just don't get it, so you gotta give them toys instead of knives ;-) I would love to study under this priest, he seems very very good.
In fact, Gudo was far from "resorting to a conventional view" here: he strongly believes that balance (of the autonomic nervous sytem) is what zazen/Buddhism is all about - when viewed from a materialistic/scientific point of view; he expounds 4 views of...everything. So there IS a difference between the (balanced) behaviour of a "buddha", and the (unbalanced) behaviour of an "ordinary sentient being". But from another viewpoint, as you say, there are no "differences".
Hi ambucias - as you've deleted the explanatory message I took some time writing from your channel page, let me say here that I don't understand what you mean. If you think my understanding of what Gudo says is wrong - you have made a mistake. I've studied with one of his students for some years, so I'm very familiar with his understanding of Buddhist theory and practice.
Not everything a zen teacher says is a mystery, or a 'koan' designed to "break the bounds of conceptual thought" ;-)
I did not deleted anything... Yet, I don't ask questions, and I don't try to understand what he say, I just enjoy the present moment, watching him explaining things haha.
I prefer "koan" compare to "scientific" explaination...
what does he say at 1:01? "When the sympathetic nervous system is stronger, people are usually.." [it's sounds like "very spija"] o.0

Hi ambucias - If you didn't delete my message, I apologise. I sent two: the second was there on your page..then it was gone!
I had a feeling your comment was made without understanding what Gudo is saying - so no surprise that it made no sense! Haha ;-)
If you prefer 'koan' to 'scientific' explanation, Gudo Nishijima is not your man - or maybe he is...just the man for you!
