This MIGHT BE the greatest game in NFL HISTORY. Definitely one of the best ever, but forgotten and overlooked. I will never foget what agreat game this was - even as an 11 yr old I knew it. CLASSIC NFL from THE GOLDEN ERA
@MrStones64 I'm a NIner fan, but I have to say you are probably right. Highly unlikely they win 13 next year, 9 or 10 will be more like it, there '12 schedule is really tough. Too bad too , everything lined up for them this year.
I'm a Giants fan, but are you already giving up on your team? Your team just has to worry about winning the division and that's it. Don't worry about getting the best record in the league. The Giants next season play 7 playoff team and the NFC East, I'm not worried one bit.

WHY do we always end up with these heartbreaking devastating fucking moments of bad luck?? I swear to god ....... the 49ers ripped my heart out and fed it to me last night.... we had that game last night and then it's like all of a sudden the worst possible thing happens to us. It would be one thing if we just got our asses handed to us but to have the game won and then fuck ourselves over in the worst way kills me. FUUUUUUUUCK
@BackStageCowboy The 49ers are still 5-0 in the only game that matters. They have put the last minute hurt onto the other side many times as well. I was in college during the Walsh dynasty and I can feel the same energy coming from Jim Harbaugh. Good times are coming, don't worry.
deja vu all over again first roger craig fumble then 21 years later Kal Williams fumble. Matt Bahr hit GW FG then 21 years later Laurence Tynes hit GW FG. Giants always get lucky breaks in the NFC Championships and some cases the Super Bowl
Craig is still the man! He should still be in the hall of fame. He was Marshall Faulk before Faulk played. Could run and catch as well if not better then every receiver except Rice of course. Put him and C. Haley in the hall and stop playing politics. Haley has 5 rings (More then anyone) and stats are as good if not better then all other DE's that played the game. Should be against the law for such injustices.
@jverify the fumble aside roger deserves to be in the hall of fame. he was the first to rush and recieve for 1,000 yards in the SAME SEASON before anyone ever heard of marshall faulk. why faulk is there before roger is a DISGRACE and a slap in the face to the team of the 80's. not only that roger played on THREE super bowl teams
Maaaan.....Roger craig....what a douchebag. I mean if I was a niners fan I would be furious after that...how the FUCK you going to fumble in that situation like that... it is what it is though. But even I say ouch when I see this. Nice to see the niners good again though. Go pats!
what are you kidding? i was in my late teens and i remember this game as if were yesterday. i left a football sized hole in my bedroom door after this loss i was SOOOOOOOOOO pissed. worst loss EVER in my lifetime, but you know what? we win sunday and it will erase that memory FOREVER
@jmaster38 We must be the same age. As a LT fan from 1982, when he recovered that fumble I laughed and cried like a baby. Pure joy personified. Greatest win in Giant history. No doubt. Pure Joy. See you on Sunday. It'll be great!
@jmaster38 Looks like Kyle Williams just made sure the memory lives forever. Hey look at it this way...at least the Craig fumble is no longer the worst loss in your lifetime. Any football sized holes in your bedroom tonight?
@MrAudacity11 no not at all that night. i guess i must have grown up. tough loss still. DAMM YOU NY GIANTS!!! (got that out of my system) lol there's always next year. i'm really looking forward to it.
@167TOONML That's why this game was legendary. A Hall of Fame running back, fumbled into the hands of a Hall of Fame linebacker in crunch-time. Sunday is going to be a holiday. Have fun brother!
Roger Craig: First ever to do 1,000 rush/1,000 pass, Three Super Bowl rings, Pro-Bowl five times, 1988 NFL MVP, Led all running backs in receptions for six straight years: 1984-1989, remains the only running back to lead the NFL in receptions for a single season, and the only one ever to record over 100 receiving yards in a Super Bowl. He shouldn't be remembered for this one play. But it still hurts... no one more than Rodger. He should be in Hall of Fame.
To this day, over 20 years later, I still can't believe they got this fumble back and they ended up winning and ended up beating that offensive juggernaut known as the Bills.
Roger Craig does deserve flack for the loss. It wasn't like the 49ers were behind and he fumbled. They had the game. It was all over. They were going back to the Super Bowl, and he blew it. He absolutely blew it. All he had to do was hold onto the ball.
@iusinger I agree. Wost loss in Niners history. However, end of dynasty came after we lost to the Falcons in the 1998 Divisional Playoffs. My opinion. Things just have not been the same since. So frustrating! This will make it so much more sweeter when we do bounce back to glory. Go Niners!
@iusinger No. Worst loss in 49er history was the 1972 playoff loss to the Cowboys, when Toni Fritch kicked that onside kick and the Cowboys recovered. The 49ers had the game in the bag but let it slip away with less than 3 minutes to go. It took them almost a decade to recover from that loss.
You know I screamed for joy. Craig damn near never fumbled. That will to me be the greatest football game I've ever seen. Buffalo could've won their Super Bowl due to the injury to Joe Montana. But NY defense was unreal and OJ Anderson was phenomenal that year
I was 12 years old and cried like my dog died. The Niners has that a great strip but a fluke play too.I've never forgiven Craig for that even tho he was great, we would of had 3 in a row!!
I don't care how good a team you are, if you are the 70s Steelers, 2000s Patriots, 90s Cowboys....at some point in time you need a little luck to win the Super Bowl. It may not happen in the playoffs - maybe it happens in regular season (win division/home field). A lot of great teams failed to reach the Super Bowl due to a very untimely play at some point as well. Mind you - luck doesn't win it, doing all the little things does & that can help put you in position to take advantage of the luck
@TheEsquire212 Jealous of the giants?! Ha! Why would five rings be jealous of three? And you think the giants were better in 1989? Based on what? The niners dominated the regular season, then went ballz deep on the entire playoff field. Idiot homer
@jbobbster Joe wouldn't have played in super bowl if I remember correctly he had a bruised sternum and broken finger on throwing hand. While Steve Young hadn't taken the job from Joe yet, he was an able back up. We had the number 3 offense the next year with Young leading it. Not to mention the number 2 defense in 1990 and the number 4 defense in 91. Everyone knows this game was the super bowl.
Yes, I've heard from you NFC types -- that the NFC Championship game WAS the Super Bowl. As I recall, the Giants had their hands full with the Bills in SB XXV.
I'm still sorry the 49ers didn't win the NFC Championship in '97. The Broncos would have beat them in the Super Bowl. Perfect retaliation for '89.
@slaterms11 During that time frame it was the Super Bowl...I mean from 1982 to 1997 Super Bowls the NFC was 15-1. That is a pretty good record, and 89 was a good year wasn't it...lol That is the only Super Bowl Buffalo even put up a fight the rest they got smashed...
its sad that this is what he is highly remembered for.....i was pissed at him for yrs, but even so, he brought alot of good to the niners and definitely deserves the HOF!!! If marshal faulk is in, then how can this guy not be in?????
Luck would be Craig just fumbling...Howard MADE THE PLAY and LT was right there on the spot. THEN, the Giants drove into range to score. Hell, the 49ers are lucky Lewis Billups dropped a gimme int in Super Bowl XXIII or else they wouldn't have even won that.
I love how whenever the Giants beat a (supposedly) better team (SF in 1990, NE in 2007 -- better stats, YES, but better TEAM? NO) that the yokels who are envious of us always say it's "luck".
Man, you can't fumble at that point. (but he did) The niners were going to 3 peat. San Fransisco traded Craig after this season. He had a little off year like Madden said, but had he not fumbled and the Niners won, I wonder if Montana would have even been able to play. I thought Dallas was going to 3 peat back in 94 but they ran into the niners. They had many turnovers that game, and I still believe they had the better team, just like I think Frisco was better than NY here, but .........
@triofdoom No, we were better. We were better in '86. We were better in '89 and lost on some fluky bullshit to the Rams, or else we would have beaten SF AND Denver (again). We were better in 1990, despite missing our starting QB and having a better defense than SF. Are you drunk??? We had to run Ottis back out there when we clearly had drafted Rodney Hampton to replace him -- and Rodney got hurt for the first of numerous times as we ran him into the ground the entire decade.
What a game. Let's not forget the AFC juggernaunt Buffalo Bills. 1990 was the year they definitely should have won it all. 2 to 1 on time of possession wont get it done though...
@optimus2g They did not deserve anything ! They won this game on pure field goals ! is that a real championship team ? they got lucky ! with Montana hurt , and Craig fumble .Craig never fumbled ! He was always known by his security !
@chapinrey Stop crying and take it like a a man. The Giants beat the Niners 3 times in those years in the playoffs---none of them were "lucky". The Giants controlled the tempo of the game (clock), and should have beaten them by more. Mo Carthon dropped a sure TD in the end zone on their first drive too. Like LB Gary Reasons said after their first meeting earlier that season on Monday Night: The Giants had their number, and they knew it.
@chapinrey P.S. Douche: Simms was hurt before the game even started, which you conveniently forgot to mention. You sound like someone stole your lunch money.
@chapinrey The Giants outgained them and physically beat them at both lines of scrimmage. Rationalize it however you want. The Giants were the better team and won the game AND won the SB the next week. Enjoy living in Fantasyland after reading these facts because they'll go in one ear and the other. Quit hating.
@optimus2g All luck man ! everything ! even in the superbowl .Scott norwoods fieldgoal was straight , and headed in ; when suddenly it was wide .Those Giants did not dominate anybody .They went 9-7 that year , and won many games by 3 points or less .I don't envy you at all .49ers have 4 superbowls . what pisses me off is the threepeat that came to an end against such lame team .I rather have los to an exellent team like the Bills .
@chapinrey Man, you actually are stupid. Giants were 13-3 that year, and at one point were 10-0, like Frisco. Each team lost the week before their famous matchup on MNF. Both teams were expected to be undefeated going into that game before they each lost to their division rivals (Rams and Eagles respectively). The Giants lost 7-3 in that game, and failed to score after they had a first and goal late in the 4th Quarter. They knew they were going to beat them if they played again, and they did.
@optimus2g My bad about that erroneous 9-7.They were 13-3 .You said it better than anyone ! the real test was that monday night game ; where both teams had all their starters .We all know who won that game .Hey no need to insult here .Nostalgia is what its all about .I hope to see the niners at the top one day .
@chapinrey The 1990 Giants lost their starting QB (Phil Simms) and starting RB (Rodney Hampton), and they STILL won the Super Bowl that year. Like I said, enjoy living in Fantasyland.
@chapinrey It is if the objective of the game is to score more points than your opponent. When it comes to any victory, luck always comes into play. You can't when any Super Bowl without luck, ask the 49Ers when they had to drive down the field to score the game-winning TD in Super Bowl XXIII to beat the Bengals. Luck is a byproduct of victory.
@cityhawk I disagree with you .A real championship team is dominant on the field and should be able to win when it counts . The teams who need luck to win an important game are not championship teams .
@cityhawk When you are good, luck is when hard work runs into opportunity. If youre constantly in the right place, good/lucky things will happen to you more often than not.
@jjmytube1 I couldn't agree with you more. You have put yourself in the place in where you have a chance to be lucky, and that's where hard work comes into play. Eventually at some point, when you need a play or two to get you in the position to win, do not tell me it doesn't start with practice. You train and practice to be in the position to be lucky.
@cityhawk Of course it helps if a Rb that is known to almost never fumble, fumbles & the greatest Qb in the modern era is knocked out of the game. Look the 9ers were the better team, they lost because Montana got hurt. Craig would not have been getting the ball much since the essence of the WC offense is short accurate passes to minimize turnovers and kill the clock. But thats how it went down. Most of the Great players & teams usually meet a sad & sudden end. Such is the price of greatness.
Com on guys Im sure noone feels worse than Roger. Thats why I guess noone has ever 3-peated. Its just too hard to get all the bounces for 3 straight years. Remember a Cincy LB dropped a Montana pass in the end zone at the end of the SB. Weve caught our share of breaks as well. I was pissed at him for years after that but Ive gotten over it. He was a great player for the Niners.
@alisoakita You know, as a major 49er fan that i am, i hurt so bad with this game. And boy did i hate leonard Marshall for the longest time too! Funny, i got to know him on Facebook, and he's one of the nicest and most genuine guys i've ever met. An extremely humble man too. He told me he wasn't ever out too hurt Montana or anyone for that matter, just playing hard. I have a lot of respect for him as both a player and person. Anyways...go Niners!
Hey @alisoakita, I agree with you. I love the 49ners. 1990 After all these years I'm still pissed off at Roger Craig and I'm still looking for him to kick his ass. They could have 3-peated. Even though the 49ners lost the game, this is when they were the SHIT now, they are a piece of SHIT.
One of the great games ever....would love to see the full game...I have a bevy of games I could put on....mostly whoever played the Rams.....anyone willing to put up this whole game...I will match in kind
@snorkelvideo if you put up Giants/Rams '89 playoffs, I can put up this whole game. Send me a direct message for more details I'm not used to doing this and want to know the best way to put up the whole game.
@snorkelvideo the nfl finally woke up and started selling these on dvd its part of the giants greatest games set that came out recently you can see it on there

jgraham214 10 months ago
@jgraham214 The question is would the 49ers have had Joe Montana. That would have changed the odds significantly.
jbobbster 10 months ago
@jbobbster Joe wouldn't have played in super bowl if I remember correctly he had a bruised sternum and broken finger on throwing hand. While Steve Young hadn't taken the job from Joe yet, he was an able back up. We had the number 3 offense the next year with Young leading it. Not to mention the number 2 defense in 1990 and the number 4 defense in 91. Everyone knows this game was the super bowl.
jgraham214 10 months ago
@jgraham214
Perfect retaliation for '89.
slaterms11 10 months ago
@slaterms11 During that time frame it was the Super Bowl...I mean from 1982 to 1997 Super Bowls the NFC was 15-1. That is a pretty good record, and 89 was a good year wasn't it...lol That is the only Super Bowl Buffalo even put up a fight the rest they got smashed...

It's a shame that Roger Craig isn't in the HOF.
I think that fumble is the reason why.
Turns out this was his last play as a 49er because he was left unprotected (Plan B free agency) in the offseason and signed with the Raiders.
daveverplank 11 months ago
its sad that this is what he is highly remembered for.....i was pissed at him for yrs, but even so, he brought alot of good to the niners and definitely deserves the HOF!!! If marshal faulk is in, then how can this guy not be in?????
huffer10 1 year ago
the giants got lucky. thats the play that prevented the 49ers from 3 peating.
vatothefullest757 1 year ago
@vatothefullest757 Does Steve Young lead them Over The Bills? Montana wouldnt have played
ilovejourney1 1 year ago
@ilovejourney1 I believe Steve Young would of led them.
vatothefullest757 1 year ago
@vatothefullest757

I have this game on video!! Greatest game ever!! It had everything. The Giants just made more PLAYS..

I love how whenever the Giants beat a (supposedly) better team (SF in 1990, NE in 2007 -- better stats, YES, but better TEAM? NO) that the yokels who are envious of us always say it's "luck".
TheEsquire212 1 year ago
The winner of the NFC conference game won 11 straight super bowls from the 86 Giants to 96 Packers. Domination
Niners 3, Boys 3, Skins 2, Giants 2, Packers 1.
This game like the niners/coboys games were actually the super bowl, ya know.
triofdoom 1 year ago
Man, you can't fumble at that point. (but he did) The niners were going to 3 peat. San Fransisco traded Craig after this season. He had a little off year like Madden said, but had he not fumbled and the Niners won, I wonder if Montana would have even been able to play. I thought Dallas was going to 3 peat back in 94 but they ran into the niners. They had many turnovers that game, and I still believe they had the better team, just like I think Frisco was better than NY here, but .........
triofdoom 1 year ago
@triofdoom No, we were better. We were better in '86. We were better in '89 and lost on some fluky bullshit to the Rams, or else we would have beaten SF AND Denver (again). We were better in 1990, despite missing our starting QB and having a better defense than SF. Are you drunk??? We had to run Ottis back out there when we clearly had drafted Rodney Hampton to replace him -- and Rodney got hurt for the first of numerous times as we ran him into the ground the entire decade.
TheEsquire212 1 year ago
The play that prevented San Francisco from 3peating :(
OceanWave78 1 year ago
What a game. Let's not forget the AFC juggernaunt Buffalo Bills. 1990 was the year they definitely should have won it all. 2 to 1 on time of possession wont get it done though...
swordsman6 1 year ago
@swordsman6 There's a big difference between should have and could have. The Giants deserved it.
optimus2g 1 year ago
@optimus2g They did not deserve anything ! They won this game on pure field goals ! is that a real championship team ? they got lucky ! with Montana hurt , and Craig fumble .Craig never fumbled ! He was always known by his security !
chapinrey 1 year ago
@chapinrey Stop crying and take it like a a man. The Giants beat the Niners 3 times in those years in the playoffs---none of them were "lucky". The Giants controlled the tempo of the game (clock), and should have beaten them by more. Mo Carthon dropped a sure TD in the end zone on their first drive too. Like LB Gary Reasons said after their first meeting earlier that season on Monday Night: The Giants had their number, and they knew it.
optimus2g 1 year ago
@chapinrey P.S. Douche: Simms was hurt before the game even started, which you conveniently forgot to mention. You sound like someone stole your lunch money.
optimus2g 1 year ago
@optimus2g Common ! The Giants never scored a td in that game .Who is the better team ? Man to man the Niners where a better team .
chapinrey 1 year ago
@chapinrey The Giants outgained them and physically beat them at both lines of scrimmage. Rationalize it however you want. The Giants were the better team and won the game AND won the SB the next week. Enjoy living in Fantasyland after reading these facts because they'll go in one ear and the other. Quit hating.
optimus2g 1 year ago
@optimus2g All luck man ! everything ! even in the superbowl .Scott norwoods fieldgoal was straight , and headed in ; when suddenly it was wide .Those Giants did not dominate anybody .They went 9-7 that year , and won many games by 3 points or less .I don't envy you at all .49ers have 4 superbowls . what pisses me off is the threepeat that came to an end against such lame team .I rather have los to an exellent team like the Bills .
chapinrey 1 year ago
@chapinrey Man, you actually are stupid. Giants were 13-3 that year, and at one point were 10-0, like Frisco. Each team lost the week before their famous matchup on MNF. Both teams were expected to be undefeated going into that game before they each lost to their division rivals (Rams and Eagles respectively). The Giants lost 7-3 in that game, and failed to score after they had a first and goal late in the 4th Quarter. They knew they were going to beat them if they played again, and they did.
optimus2g 1 year ago
@optimus2g My bad about that erroneous 9-7.They were 13-3 .You said it better than anyone ! the real test was that monday night game ; where both teams had all their starters .We all know who won that game .Hey no need to insult here .Nostalgia is what its all about .I hope to see the niners at the top one day .
chapinrey 1 year ago
@chapinrey The 1990 Giants lost their starting QB (Phil Simms) and starting RB (Rodney Hampton), and they STILL won the Super Bowl that year. Like I said, enjoy living in Fantasyland.
optimus2g 1 year ago
@chapinrey It is if the objective of the game is to score more points than your opponent. When it comes to any victory, luck always comes into play. You can't when any Super Bowl without luck, ask the 49Ers when they had to drive down the field to score the game-winning TD in Super Bowl XXIII to beat the Bengals. Luck is a byproduct of victory.
cityhawk 7 months ago
@cityhawk I disagree with you .A real championship team is dominant on the field and should be able to win when it counts . The teams who need luck to win an important game are not championship teams .
chapinrey 7 months ago
@cityhawk When you are good, luck is when hard work runs into opportunity. If youre constantly in the right place, good/lucky things will happen to you more often than not.
jjmytube1 6 months ago
@jjmytube1 I couldn't agree with you more. You have put yourself in the place in where you have a chance to be lucky, and that's where hard work comes into play. Eventually at some point, when you need a play or two to get you in the position to win, do not tell me it doesn't start with practice. You train and practice to be in the position to be lucky.
cityhawk 6 months ago
@cityhawk Of course it helps if a Rb that is known to almost never fumble, fumbles & the greatest Qb in the modern era is knocked out of the game. Look the 9ers were the better team, they lost because Montana got hurt. Craig would not have been getting the ball much since the essence of the WC offense is short accurate passes to minimize turnovers and kill the clock. But thats how it went down. Most of the Great players & teams usually meet a sad & sudden end. Such is the price of greatness.
jjmytube1 6 months ago
This is why Roger Craig isn't in the Hall of Fame yet.
gillianseed 1 year ago
This game was better than the Super Bowl. Probably the best conference championship game I have ever seen.
ItalianStugotsNJ 1 year ago
And that.... cost us our 6th super bowl.
JTara20 1 year ago
Any "fan" on here saying anything bad about Craig's fumble can go die. He helped to win 3 other Super Bowls. REMEMBER THAT???? Ungrateful jackasses!
pacers3115 1 year ago
I wonder how Young would have done in the Super Bowl had they went. Great QB, but at that point he was on the bench most the time.
copraiders1 1 year ago
Com on guys Im sure noone feels worse than Roger. Thats why I guess noone has ever 3-peated. Its just too hard to get all the bounces for 3 straight years. Remember a Cincy LB dropped a Montana pass in the end zone at the end of the SB. Weve caught our share of breaks as well. I was pissed at him for years after that but Ive gotten over it. He was a great player for the Niners.

CHOKE ARTIST ROGER CRAIG
gfscarface13 1 year ago
I was at that horrible game and they should have handed it to Rathman. Craig had been fumbling all season. I hate you Leonard Marshall!
alisoakita 1 year ago
@alisoakita You know, as a major 49er fan that i am, i hurt so bad with this game. And boy did i hate leonard Marshall for the longest time too! Funny, i got to know him on Facebook, and he's one of the nicest and most genuine guys i've ever met. An extremely humble man too. He told me he wasn't ever out too hurt Montana or anyone for that matter, just playing hard. I have a lot of respect for him as both a player and person. Anyways...go Niners!
Markco1 1 year ago
Hey @alisoakita, I agree with you. I love the 49ners. 1990 After all these years I'm still pissed off at Roger Craig and I'm still looking for him to kick his ass. They could have 3-peated. Even though the 49ners lost the game, this is when they were the SHIT now, they are a piece of SHIT.

One of the greatest defensive performances in NFC history. Matt Bahr should have his number retired. Perfect in the playoffs, with no room for error.
