We had a club back in 1990. When we tired of chasing down rockets which could easily end up several blocks away, we developed a technique for recovery. After many adjustments, we came up with the method of cutting a hole about 2" center of parachute. This allowed a rapid yet controlled descent. Most our rockets disappeared beyond sight and wind currants varied each layer so we added colored chalk, when ejected allowed us to spot, track thus adjusting telemetry. Recovering within 30yrd circle.

I don't understand. Robert Goddard first proved the liquid fueled rocket in the United States. He offered it to our government but we didn't listen. He patented engines and guidance systems. The Germans copied his patents and built these things from his work. If the US wasn't being run by a bunch of idiots at the time, the US would have probably been to the moon before 1969. Look at Von Braun's own words - he admits that the technology was originally developed by Goddard.
