In 1781 the continental army Rhode Island Rgt had many black soldiers, serving in one unit together with white men. But soon after the independence there was only segregation and even slavery. Many of the heroes found themselves again on the plantations.
Many more fought for the British, like the Indians they knew what was to be expected from the "patriots".
