my physics teacher lived with Garth Hudson and The Band in Big Pink back when he was in university! I'm in high school, and I wish music were still like this...
Garth joins the band provided they all pay him $10.00 each for monthly music lessons, so his parents wouldn't go ballistic he pissed away a classical music education.
I was a soldier in Bosnia during a nasty conflict and every sunday I played the Last Waltz as my church and healing process to carry on. I had the fortune to sit with Mr. Helm in Halifax in my younger days and have never forgotten this beautiful music. Thanks so very much for your creation
...i have indeed bedded all of the members of the band at one or a number of points and i can confirm that robbie has the most statue-esque rig. rick and levon were a fun two-some; richard was kind of coy and garth was like some hairy unleashed beast let off a fat chain...i got the distinct impression that levon was jealous of robbie's mansome tool, and i would be too if i was a woman...
@wheelinthesky300 Yeah, I've seen Levon's interviews from the film...he looks in pain, yet he's trying. God bless him.
I've also read "This Wheel's on Fire", so do you remember when Levon was ready to kill some guy who said Robbie was taking Muddy Waters out of the show to save time? Classic...and Muddy stayed in!
And Levon felt terrible about all of it...how Robbie and the producers decided to end it over his (legitimate) objections. I bet Richard, Rick, and Garth felt bad, too.
@wheelinthesky300 I've read Wheels on Fire also, and you're absolutely right. The actual concert was pretty ragged by his account, and most of the band members went back in and overdubbed the songs later. Levon didn't participate in that. And he REALLY was upset that Neil Diamond was there while they were talking about cutting out Muddy Waters. I recall Diamond was there because Robertson had just produced one of Diamond's albums. RIP Rick and Richard. Did Robertson make Richard's funeral?
@outlawwolf621 Manuel was known as the lead singer of the The Band, he isnt featured very much in the film simply because Martin Scorcese didnt like him, this film actually cuts entire verses out of many of the songs, this concert was in fact almost four hours long, and a much bigger event then is shown, even though Levon came very close to refusing to be in it
martin's such a fag....here he had all these god-like robbie shots (as well as the opening titles..robbie comes fist!)and i was watching shine a light as i noticed that he filmed keff and mick like if they where a duo....avoiding some awesome slide guitar playing from ronnie and charlie is like totally ignored....scorsese's a douche..he's just a groupie and a friend worshiper...shame cause he does have a cool production touch
martin is a very talented director. But you are right he does focus on only one or two band members when he does music movies. Goodfellas was a masterpiece.
agreed....my favs from him are kundun & ragging bull...and tons of his movies as well...yep..he does his movies just right....you know, i really liked how jonathan demme did that neil young movie & pearl jam's "immagine in cornice" was pretty awesome too...that's how music docs should be focused...music comes first...not celebrities
and the guy who did pink floyd's pompeii doc...god bless him...that was cheer genius....how amazing...the bnad...the set up...the shots....the dak side of the moon clips...if it was scorsese shooting the damn thing...i bet he would have sticked his camera on roger's ass
@wheelinthesky300 please let's not get romantic with marty...he's good but he owes his life to jean-luc godard,michael powell,fellini,samuel fuller or whatever.....and yep...he dated robertson..lol...nah kidding...but you're right
First saw The Last Waltz in Cambridge in 1981. Couldn't get over how cool Robbie Robertson and Ricky Danko were. Still are -- and this song still sends shivers down my spine.
Rick Danko. I'm pretty sure he wrote because of Robbie though, considering Robbie rarely sang on stage because of his stage fright...for example, his microphone is turned off through this whole concert.
Robertson wrote the song. I don't recall reading anything about him having stage fright. HIs mike was probably turned off because his voice was nowhere near as good as Manuel, Helm or Danko.
Robbie had terrible stagefright - when The Band played their first ever solo show in San Francisco he was throwing up backstage and almost didn't even perform.
yes his mic was off because he couldnt sing for shit, his lyrics and song writing were his golden attributes, his singing and ego on the other hand, not so much

Video is not true time... it's sped up, and sounds a little higher pitched as a result.
Watch the Blu-Ray, or play the original LP from the original release... or just look at their hair, and the camera flashes... way too quick. :(

ya it's true that Scorsese focused too much on Robertson.
I don't think Scorsese is particularly good at filming concerts, I think he just got lucky to be hired to film all those historic performances.
4fitter27 1 year ago 2
@4fitter27 Well, in this case the proof is in the popularity of this film. He must've done something right apart from being the friend of Robbie.

Amazing...a song from this concert besides "Don't Do It" that has some shots of Garth and Richard.
Nothing on Rick and Levon, of course; but even they aren't featured as much as Robbie.
And I don't know what to think of Robertson; no one will ever know exactly what went on with them except themselves.
I do think he solely made the decision to stop touring, and I dislike that he arranged all this over their objections.
Plus, Robbie hired Scorsese to film it, and Martin filmed him the most.
RamrodtotheMax 1 year ago
@RamrodtotheMax According to Levon Helm's autobiography,
Levon did not really want to be filmed,
as he did not want The Band broken up.
If you watch The Last Waltz, Levon is gritting his teeth in the interviews he does.

@buckfan1969 I'm guessing Robertosn pulled himself out of the beach house and Malibu and condescended to put in an appearance at Richard's funeral.
But Robbie refused to come if Muddy Waters was there.

@theachtungtree Scorcese and Robertson were good friends
-and during the post production editing of The Last Waltz,
Malibu coke buddies.
The odds were stacked agaist the other Band memebers from the beginning of the project.
It shouldn't be called The Last Waltz.
It should be renamed "The Huge Ego Of Robbie Robertson".
