In my opinion this is by far the greatest Elliott Smith song. I get so frustrated because I have friends who like Elliott's music, but I need at least one friend who loves it as much as me. It's odd how my love for his music is like a bottled up emotion somehow.
its frusturating knowing that i will never be able to write lyrics that will not be anywhere near this good, fuck, his lyrics are ridiculously good, better then bob dylan, or anyone else, best ever, if only he was still here, but oh well
These are the lyrics I hear: Here's the foreign son on holiday leading her eyes about halfway. A look you know it's killed many men and I've been all of them inside a week. See the man in the bar that got too drunk to speak. He endures that song, mundane as it is. Raising a drink that wasn't his. Night's up at the top of the lift, where continents drift too far away to keep it together for long, this half holiday.
@Vamphaery (Continued) From the bar they walk to Place Pigalle. The taxi waved down, goodnight, sleep well. Now it's just a step to the door, and he wants all the more to bring her away. Out of this temporary half holy day. (I really think he says "holy day" the last time he says it, perhaps to underscore the importance of it to him personally. Could be totally wrong.)
@kieran514 Yeah, I now have to agree. It's definitely dream. And it's also "he endures, that's all, mundane as it is" instead of "that song." So you're right, I think between the two of us we've got it. :D (Although we could both be horribly wrong too LOL.) Love this song so much.
so this wasn't even released on a b side? they are crazy.. as if they didn't put this on basement, or new moon! meowpurple, you should edit the lyrics to the correct ones
correct lyrics: Here's the foreign sun on holiday. Meeting her eyes about half way. A look, you know it's killed many men. And I've been all of them inside a week. See the man in a bar that got too drunk to speak. He endures, that's all, mundane as it is. Chasing a dream that wasn't his. That's about the top of the lift, where the continents drift, too far away to keep it together for long. This half holiday.
go download the ask sound recorder toolbar. it's quick and easy and you can record any sound playing on your computer with no background noise. audacity used to do this but it doesn't work with vista (if you have it).
It probably never got released because Figure 8 had lots of good songs already. I also think the lyrics are bad compared to the rest of the Elliott smith discography.
I figured it out. Finally LOL. It's "Days in a dream that wasn't his." For proof, listen to this live performance: watch?v=_Kl53HRJptI

Elliott is defo the waltz master. It's baffling how he manages to condense all the different senses into sound, so you feel like you're there.

@Vamphaery hmm, i can really hear the MM at the end of 'dream" (where you hear drink) .. together we can figure out these lyrics!
