if u have 1.8 go creative mode try putting ice wait for it to maetl.it is stable water unless tehere is block update jsut like in some areas in a large desert in which u see sand wihtout support.doing block update such as resdstone trigger put blocks or destroy will mkae the sand go down ebcause there is update.so do it with icw once its water charge it with redstone!

i can just block the water with dirt, break the dirt, and the dirt will flow down along with the harvested wheat. then i go get the dirt (and wheat) and put the dirt back.

Following your instructions and this worked PERFECTLY for water. When I use lava however how do you prevent the lava from burning the boat? My switch never works more than twice with lava though because it sets the boat on fire after awhile haha. Any ideas to fix that or to protect against the restart -> falling sand issue? I bet almost exactly half of the people who've tried this couldn't get it to work! I was checking to see if it still worked and i realised something very important. Minecraft has some directionality quirks which mean that this system will only work if the system is set up facing east/west (by 'facing' i mean, the water output is to the west or east. Sorry for not telling you all sooner, I must have just been lucky and been building it on this orientation.

Sorry buddy looks like you might have been building it in the wrong orientation. The sound you heard was the torches burning out on the fast pulser (make sure you have enough torches in the array so that it doesn't burn out completely)
