@PhotoShopChannel No, it really does. 24p and the 180 degree shutter give an ENTIRELY different look than higher framerates do. The lower frame rate and resultant motion blur is part of the film look.
@PhotoShopChannel Public Enemies, for instance was shot at 30p, and the result was motion that was very offputting to a lot of people, and made the film look kind of cheap.
@PhotoShopChannel 24p won't magically make video look like film. But it is a very important aspect. Other aspects are good framing, the 35mm DoF (which you get with the 7D and RED Camera), good even lighting, etc etc. But 24p is a very important aspect.
@PhotoShopChannel I suggest you look at the comments for that link you posted, as so many of the commentators who ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT disagree with the video.
@Pwells1 24fps is terrible, that's why cinemas play frames back to back, so this feeble frame rate doesn't look jittery as it is. What the cinemas play is "that film look" not what YouTube plays which is one frame at a time.
@PhotoShopChannel What are you even talking about??? Nothing you said made sense AT ALL. 24p is what every movie shoots at, and what every fiction tv show shoots at, and what every music video shoots at.
What are you talking about when you mention playing frames back to back? Huh? And you're using the word jitter wrong. Kid, you don't know what you're talking about here AT ALL.
@PhotoShopChannel I watched it. But your comment didn't make any sense. Were you referring to 3:2 pulldown??? Or what? Because your comment makes no sense dude. Unlike you I have actually worked on films, went to school, have used the RED and cinema cameras, and kind of know what I'm talking about here.
24p was invented for practical reasons, but the look has remained even as digital came up with 60i and other framerates, because it is pleasing to the eye
@Pwells1 Yes, when they play each frame twice. Why is there a need for that if 24p is so pleasing to the eye? The older generation of filmmaker is used to 24, but I'm telling you its not going to last forever.
@PhotoShopChannel It's still 24p if you play each frame twice. You are still getting 24 individual still images to build a persistence of motion. It's just a different projector technique. The way of playing this on a tv screen is to do 3:2 pulldown where one frame is 3 fields, the next is 2, the next 3, etc etc, which creates "judder". It's all just technical stuff. But all of it adds together to form that film look and motion blur that gives film that special feel.
@Pwells1 But you would still consider standard 24fps straight out of the camera a film look? Because in the digital age when we watch allot of videos online and such through an LED/LCD screen 3:2 pull-down is not used.
@PhotoShopChannel I mean, look at various films shot digitally. Superman Returns, Social Network, Contagion, The Informant, Zodiac. They're all shot at 24p. Animated films are all shot at 24p or "2s" (12p).
@PhotoShopChannel Basically when viewing a progressive signal, half the time you are looking at black, and half the time you are looking at the actual image. So it's IMAGE, BLACK, IMAGE, BLACK, IMAGE, BLACK. And because you see blackness, your brain fills in a gap there of and in between motion, and this makes you think that you're watching an object in motion. But, just seeing image black image black, 24 times, that creates eye strain to a degree because the alternating isn't fast enough.
@PhotoShopChannel So by repeatinbg each frame twice or three times and having more black gaps, it makes it smoother and less strobey on the eyes. But you're still seeing only 24 individual frames. The beauty of 24p is that you get that blur effect, which makes everything seem more dreamy and helps you enter the cinematic space easier. It helps you daydream and enter a cinematic world and leave the real world. You see, we see the real world at 60fps, but Dreams are much slower and more blurred.
@PhotoShopChannel And THAT is why 24p still remains. That blur that comes from a slower shutter makes the motion much more pleasing. And you can't use a 180 degree (1/48 of a second) shutter speed at higher framerates.
@PhotoShopChannel At one point the guy says that shooting at 60p and dropping frames is equivalent to shooting at 24p, which couldn't be further from the truth, as the shutter speed is entirely different in each case, giving an entirely different look. It's clear that the guy is a techy nerd and not a practical in the field cinematographer who knows what he's talking about. He even calls 24p a "marketing gimmick", when that couldnt be further from the truth. 24p is a pro standard
@PhotoShopChannel Have you ever shot 24, 30p, 48p, 60p, 60i yourself? Have you ever worked in the film business? Done any schooling? Do you understand film cameras? Or are you just going off of one video you saw on vimeo from a guy whose comments are filled with people saying "yeah..no"

WHY DOES EVERYONE SHOOT A LOAD OF SHIT ANGLES - WITH NO STORY LINE AND A ROCK TRACK THAT SOUNDS LIKE I CAN'T DANCE BY GENISIS...LETS SEE THE CAMERA ON A FUCKING DOLLY SHOT AND INTERACTION BETWEEN 2 ACTORS ...
@geoffdoor Seriously, where do you see any videos that play music that sounds like "I can't dance"? This is a fucking blues track by Jonny Lang. Also learn how to read titles: this is a TEST shot.
You want a video with a story line? Go watch a damn movie.
@liquidSpin well it would have been better with i can't dance wouldn' t it ...off to get 7 hours sleep because some of us work in the real world of film making ...
I can get an ELABORATE story out of this. The man has been broken down, cheated on, to a point where he's got nothing to do but smoke his cigarette. Pertaining to the music, "Lie To Me," seems like he's got someone who's broken his heart. Just my two cents :D
So hows the audio? We shoot films but being low budget we record our audio direct to the camera plugging in via the XLR input, i hear we can buy an add-on for the 5D that will mean we can plug in via XLR, do you have that add-on? I heard that it picks up camera noise (when not using the XLR obviously).
Zogji, what did you do for the color correction? What software and what properties did you change (color balance, contrast, etc)? (Looks very professional).
@mistervela i used FCP (Final Cut Pro and Color) but i change some settings in camera too, i just played with camera i don`t know exactly what i change some saturation for sure and some contrast....
Get a job, pseudo-intellectual, pseudo-artsy, pompous white boy with bad facial hair and diseased lungs! That goes for you too, pseudo-intellectual, pseudo-artsy, pompous white boy behind the camera. Foo lol.
this is gonna sound stupid but everyone knows about the firmware update for the 5d that gives 24P recording as well as live histogram and manual auto level control?
So, bottom line, what do you see that looks different when you shoot 24 over 30? It will still have the same depth of field that you selected...by the way, nice sharpness without it looking sharpened as in standard or landscape mode, which adds that "gutter" of white edge to everything...So...?
What makes the difference is the slight "stutter" that we are used to from cinemas since early 1900's.
Before modern times, the mechanics of film-projectors could not do more than 24 fps. If a movie has 30 frames per second or more, the motion infact looks and feels more realistic. But many people argue movies loose their magic that way. Less "dreamy", some will argue.
James Cameron however (terminator, avatar, titanic etc) is a big advocate for higher framerates in cinema
7D? If you want to upgrade but don't have the money for Mark II get a 7D.... otherwise get the mark II. I will never go back to a cropped sensor, eww. Plus the Mark II has better ISO ratings especially beyond ISO 3200. The body is built more solid as well as numerous other reasons I will stick with the Mark II. There are a FEW video capabilities that Mark II can't do that the 7D does have but all you have to do is install the Magic Lantern firmware and you've got most of everything covered.
@matthew66762 i prefer 5dii also but pretty sure the body of 7d is better built, check it if u dont believe me, more magnesium and better weather sealing.
You could be right ukguy, I was told the 7D had better weather sealing but now as sturdy of a body. Either way, I'll stick with my Mark II =) Both great camera's!
Agreed, 5D mk2 has one big advantage. Pure image quality. Other than that, the 7D is actually better in most other aspects. 5D is very good, but I would love a 7D to for its totally incredible "bang for the buck"
@Namielus If price was no object, the 5D Mark II with the latest firmware update would be much better. What "other aspects" is the 7D better in, except for its lower price point?
@iSOBigD Let me tell you. The 7D has a better, faster and actually impressive focusing system. It has faster framerate in picture mode (8fps on 7d ,, 3.9 on 5d mkII) The 5d MkII only does 30, 24 and 25 fps, the 7D can also do 60fps in video (720p/60) for awesome slow motion.
Overall I agree 5D mk2 is the better choice (I have 5D) but 7D is better in several ways , no discussion, no opinions - just facts.
@Namielus Do you know if the 5D would be physically capable of high-speed shooting in video mode with a firmware upgrade? I recently bought an HD camcorder which does 240fps at 720x480 and that's probably one of the only things I haven't read that the 5D can do. 60 fps I'm not really interested in because some $350 camcorders can do 60fps at 1080p and up to 600 fps at lower resolutions already (Sanyo HF1).
@iSOBigD, There are theories that the 5D could to 720/60, but it is highly unlikely that this will ever happen. Even in third party firmware like "magic lantern", magic lantern does a lot of other great stuff tho. Google it "magic lanter for 5d".
However, the 60p function of 5D is much nicer than you think. Using twixtor you can make a pretty amazing 240 fps emulation to awesome slow moe. Your slow moe video was beautiful aswell. Thumbs up
@Namielus I'm actually curious about the 5D's durability because I just ordered one (for $800!1!) but I've left my $300 Fuji camera outside in the winter at -10 degrees C for many hours filming many sunsets without any problems. the LCD screen has lots of ghosting when it's cold, but once you're back indoors, it works fine. :P
@iSOBigD I live in norway, similar climate to canada.
One day in -28 degrees I forgot my 5D outside. I had a panic and took it inside. It was horrible. The whole camera started to freeze the humidy of the air inside , completely covered in white frost, all over my expensive lenses. Almost made me cry. I decided to let the camera just defrost itself and the moist evaporate. Luckily I have not noticed any less performance. But if you bring a camera from extreme cold to warm air. Use airtight bags
@fourth1000 7D ppl always talking shit about mk2. Both are great cameras and 24p produces the 'film look' if u want smooth movements life-like get a camcorder foo
@sfedorov nobodys talkin shit. the 5d2 is a great camera. But before the release of their new firmware, there were a lot o people with sloppy-ass conversions of 24p. At the time; before the new firmware, my suggestion was the 7D. you get me foo?
I own a 7D and plan to get the 5DM2 or just wait to see what camera canon comes up with to compete with Reds new cameras; since they are starting to realize the popularity of their cameras in the film community. Foo.
@fourth1000 =) not nobodys, but u're not from what i gather - but it is quite common for 7d folks to talk down on the mk2 to justify their purchase. both are great cameras as i said but ye i guess i misjudged you my bad i retract the 'foo' statement =) peace
@stenbrott666 nice opinion! But I bought it for reasons being; i know the next 5D Mark3 due out this year, will be better than the ever upgrading to perfection 5D Mark 2.
@halo3guyy imagequality is the same as 550d and the only reason for paying the extra money is if you are planning to drop it to the floor or shoot fast moving objects.
what shutter speed did u use?

@piptrix It's a macro shot but you can get the same effect using cheap as chips extension tubes. You'll have to focus manually but that's fine eh? :)

Good range of shots. The ones from overhead were pretty interesting. Nice to see experimentation.

this is gonna sound stupid but everyone knows about the firmware update for the 5d that gives 24P recording as well as live histogram and manual auto level control?

So, bottom line, what do you see that looks different when you shoot 24 over 30? It will still have the same depth of field that you selected...by the way, nice sharpness without it looking sharpened as in standard or landscape mode, which adds that "gutter" of white edge to everything...So...?
sclogse1 1 year ago
What makes the difference is the slight "stutter" that we are used to from cinemas since early 1900's.
Before modern times, the mechanics of film-projectors could not do more than 24 fps. If a movie has 30 frames per second or more, the motion infact looks and feels more realistic. But many people argue movies loose their magic that way. Less "dreamy", some will argue.
James Cameron however (terminator, avatar, titanic etc) is a big advocate for higher framerates in cinema

I was quite taken with this video. I am curious as to what lens you used for the macro shots. They are great.

This feels a bit sloppy. The shutter speed feels too low, but there is so much ghosting in the slow movements. Just get the 7D
fourth1000 2 years ago
Just read more about 7D body.........
zogji 2 years ago
There are a FEW video capabilities that Mark II can't do that the 7D does have but all you have to do is install the Magic Lantern firmware and you've got most of everything covered.
matthew66762 2 years ago
@matthew66762 i prefer 5dii also but pretty sure the body of 7d is better built, check it if u dont believe me, more magnesium and better weather sealing.
ukguy 2 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
You could be right ukguy, I was told the 7D had better weather sealing but now as sturdy of a body. Either way, I'll stick with my Mark II =) Both great camera's!
matthew66762 2 years ago
Agreed, 5D mk2 has one big advantage. Pure image quality. Other than that, the 7D is actually better in most other aspects. 5D is very good, but I would love a 7D to for its totally incredible "bang for the buck"
Namielus 1 year ago
@Namielus If price was no object, the 5D Mark II with the latest firmware update would be much better. What "other aspects" is the 7D better in, except for its lower price point?
iSOBigD 1 year ago
@iSOBigD Let me tell you. The 7D has a better, faster and actually impressive focusing system. It has faster framerate in picture mode (8fps on 7d ,, 3.9 on 5d mkII) The 5d MkII only does 30, 24 and 25 fps, the 7D can also do 60fps in video (720p/60) for awesome slow motion.
Overall I agree 5D mk2 is the better choice (I have 5D) but 7D is better in several ways , no discussion, no opinions - just facts.
Namielus 1 year ago
@Namielus Do you know if the 5D would be physically capable of high-speed shooting in video mode with a firmware upgrade? I recently bought an HD camcorder which does 240fps at 720x480 and that's probably one of the only things I haven't read that the 5D can do. 60 fps I'm not really interested in because some $350 camcorders can do 60fps at 1080p and up to 600 fps at lower resolutions already (Sanyo HF1).
iSOBigD 1 year ago
@iSOBigD, There are theories that the 5D could to 720/60, but it is highly unlikely that this will ever happen. Even in third party firmware like "magic lantern", magic lantern does a lot of other great stuff tho. Google it "magic lanter for 5d".
However, the 60p function of 5D is much nicer than you think. Using twixtor you can make a pretty amazing 240 fps emulation to awesome slow moe. Your slow moe video was beautiful aswell. Thumbs up
Namielus 1 year ago
@Namielus OOps, I mean the 60fps function of 7D
Namielus 1 year ago
@iSOBigD Btw, the 7D arguably has better weather sealing. I want to get the 7D to compliment the 5D mkII i already have. Both incredible cameras
Namielus 1 year ago
@Namielus I'm actually curious about the 5D's durability because I just ordered one (for $800!1!) but I've left my $300 Fuji camera outside in the winter at -10 degrees C for many hours filming many sunsets without any problems. the LCD screen has lots of ghosting when it's cold, but once you're back indoors, it works fine. :P
iSOBigD 1 year ago
@iSOBigD I live in norway, similar climate to canada.
One day in -28 degrees I forgot my 5D outside. I had a panic and took it inside. It was horrible. The whole camera started to freeze the humidy of the air inside , completely covered in white frost, all over my expensive lenses. Almost made me cry. I decided to let the camera just defrost itself and the moist evaporate. Luckily I have not noticed any less performance. But if you bring a camera from extreme cold to warm air. Use airtight bags

@fourth1000 i had the 7d and it's not good

@fourth1000 7D ppl always talking shit about mk2. Both are great cameras and 24p produces the 'film look' if u want smooth movements life-like get a camcorder foo
sfedorov 1 year ago
@sfedorov nobodys talkin shit. the 5d2 is a great camera. But before the release of their new firmware, there were a lot o people with sloppy-ass conversions of 24p. At the time; before the new firmware, my suggestion was the 7D. you get me foo?
I own a 7D and plan to get the 5DM2 or just wait to see what camera canon comes up with to compete with Reds new cameras; since they are starting to realize the popularity of their cameras in the film community. Foo.
fourth1000 1 year ago
@fourth1000 =) not nobodys, but u're not from what i gather - but it is quite common for 7d folks to talk down on the mk2 to justify their purchase. both are great cameras as i said but ye i guess i misjudged you my bad i retract the 'foo' statement =) peace

halo3guyy 1 year ago
@halo3guyy imagequality is the same as 550d and the only reason for paying the extra money is if you are planning to drop it to the floor or shoot fast moving objects.
