  • So U agree with me! Great

  • *sigh*

    try it this way:

'nigga' is hurtful because it means 'subhuman'.

It's also hurtful because it's racist because it's exclusively addresses blacks.

if you allow it to be used indiscriminately against members of other races, it's still hurtful because it means subhuman. BUT it's not racist anymore.

So does that mean people can use it as a term of endearment? NO because IT STILL MEANS 'SUBHUMAN'.

Just use it to insult folk like normal.

would you say "you subhuman cunt" to a friend/lover?

  • censorship doesn't work.

    However, good advice does work.

the association OF the word WITH a particular race is ITSELF racist.

    so the solution is TWOFOLD:

    1) stop making the word exclusively about blacks

and 2) stop using it as a term of endearment.

why is this simple concept so confusing to you????

    a NIGGA is a NIGGA

    sim-ple

you CAN'T eliminate the word OR it's power, but you CAN reduce it, AND spread it fairly, so that when you call one black man a nigga not all blacks will be offended.

  • The problem with the n word is that it has been made available to everyone. The focus should be on strengthening brothas and sistas and not giving attention to niggas. Nigga get stronger with the more attention you give him.

  • I Think that we need to stop using it right now. Swift Bitness

  • THE BLACK PHARAOHS AN IGNORED CHAPTER OF HISTORY tells of a time when Kings from deep in Africa conquered ancient Egypt

  • I think if young people were more aware of their history, and the suffering and inhumanity that their forefathers endured, and the role that this word played in that history maybe they would be more sensitive about it. Maybe if so called bullshit entertainment tv (bet) would have more programs of substance instead of "bling, whips and ho's" maybe the youth would be more conscious

  • my brother, i love that. i don't know shit, i don't know anything, but it just seems to me that this effort to stamp it out has to indicate that somebody somewhere still feels threatened by it. and it's not my story, i don't really have any business mucking around in other people's issues, but i was always interested in this one, the idea that a word could have so much power in people's lives. heavy shit. thanks for your reply.

  • i can't relate to fearing a word. or is it not fear, but something else? you tell me. i don't get it.

  • it's not fear my brother. It's disapointment that the people that use it as a term of endearment do think about it as the battle cry of their opressors.

  • It's interesting that the gay community has succeeded in appropriating the word "queer" without anything near the controversy surrounding "nigger". But I think that's largely because they used the "front door" approach of intentionally adopting "queer" as a political statement. "Nigger", by contrast, has seeped back into public culture thru gangsta rap, ghetto talk, etc., and is used as a term of disrespect as often as one of endearment. Admittedly, though, there's a lot more to it than that.

  • u knw wat i dnt get is, whyt ppl hav been saying the word nigger for hundreds of yrs but as soon as the black ppl try to reclaim it, its now bad all of a sudden????

  • Hmm " ...bad all of the sudden!" You think it only recently became offensive. Interesting

  • it was offensive all my life.

  • @KejiaSista Dont understand what you are tryin gto say please expand your thought.

    Paul

  • I don't think it is possible to reclaim a pejorative term and attempt to use it affectionately. It was used to derogate and subordinate blacks, and we have the audacity to use at as a term of endearment. That is ludicrous and absurd. And yes, I'm black, but refuse to use that word, because n***** because it isn't an adequete description of our progress, our self-rightousness. "Say it loud I'm black and I'm proud."

  • One down 22 Million to go!

  • ima nigga, the word go's soo deep, and itz soo popular, itz never gonna go away, no matter how hard they try to get rid of it. it all depends on how you use the word. and theres many complications with what race can use the word and what race that cant use the word nigga...

  • I agree with the message. As the narrator (not sure if it was Dr. West himself) said, the word should not be used, "at all." However, I hear many speeches in which so-called black leaders (inlcuding Dr. West) use the term...so, unless they desist from using the word, how can the rest of the population (black or white) be reasonably expected to follow suit?

  • It has always been Do as i say not as I do! The Right Thing is the right thing. We Don't need people to model the right thing.

    phh

  • SICK SHIT

  • Oh Shit!!! That was the guy from The Matrix!!!

  • Yeah, and Harvard(ooops...Princeton...since Summers actually MADE him TEACH rather than spend his time and the students' money dropping a Rap CD, rather than ...gasp...actually deign to spend time in the class room)

Sad when being in a B grade philosophy-spouting movie gets you more 'cred' than being a Prof.

  • Oh so you were in his class I take it...

  • Nope, Just a fan of the message

  • Funny how people believe what they read and yet don't know his students were very upset and against Summers actions...hmmmm just to enlighten you on that.

  • Funny but none of that deminishes the message

  • So, who runs the admin? Summers or the Students. West wasn't fulfilling his contract\

    End

    of

    Story.
