Some racist songs have sometimes been incorrectly associated with Horton. These songs are by a singer calling himself "Johnny Rebel," who did not began recording until years after Horton's death. The mistake is apparently because Horton recorded the historical song "Johnny Reb."
I'm not 100 per cent sure of this but didn't Johhny Married the widow of Hank Williams and as he was afraid of flying he preferred to go by car and got killed in an auto accident. Was it '61? Anyway, destiny can be real strange.
He was married to Hank Williams widow. He had premonitions of dying because of a drunk. He was involved in a head-on crash with a drunk driver Nov. 5, 1960.
Thnx jimmyccoy1964. Something that have almost always fascinated me is the connection men and trains. Anyway in movies (mostly older films), books and music...I mean, men can have the darn finest looking dolls but during the night, they toss and turn when they hear trains passing by. It's that old urge to move as it's no moss on a rolling stone. Like the call of the wild! I love trains, just being on them make me feel good and it's the trip that counts, not the destination.
@markowee Growing up, my Dad listened to this, and we were stuck listening to it as well. At the time we wanted to hear R&B, and rock and roll. I still love my rock, but I love this too. Good memories.
@gregryf I heard them. And if you look around on the net, you'll find out that they weren't actually done by Johnny Horton. The songs most people take to be Johnny Horton songs that are racist are actually done by Johnny Rebel, real name Clifford Joseph Trahan. Horton never recorded the racist songs he gets blamed for.
@cutter73 Well, I'm glad you told me that and I hope you are correct. However I seem to remember at least one of them from when it first came out. It was called
Banjo Lips. I could be wrong but this is what I seem to remember.

50's rockabilly.
This song, that is, the original is from 1953. It's quiet similar to this version, except for the back up voices.

My favorite Johnny Horton song too. What a tragedy he died so young.
