  • 'The Hounds Around' I remember it well!

  • wow, this is the first time i've seen this. Big heavy was name after me... i was there big baby, thats what they told me that.s my father and mother... i.m the baby of the bunch.

  • Yup @ 15 yrs old I remember listening to this as Alan Freed's program came on the radio on WINS out of New York....loved him and his program...he was a good guy that did a lot for the colors to blend, but he paid a heavy price for it. He got blackballed and some say that Dick Clark had something to do with it..maybe so, I can't say. My crowd loved and stood with him..RIP, Alan Freed you were and still are loved and appreciated...

  • Not many know that The Hound Dog began WBLK 93.7 in 1964 to promote Soul & R&B, Motown strictly Black music. He was ahead of his time, he really loved everyone & wanted equality. catch ya on the flipside Hound Dog!

  • Not sure if this is the actual recording, but definitely Alan Freed's theme song.

  • I think it wasn't Freed's theme song but was, instead, George "Hound Dog" Lorenz's theme song each weeknight from 7-10PM and 9PM-3AM on Saturday nights over WKBW in Buffalo, NY, serving the entire Eastern seaboard. The Hound was 2nd to none.

  • @rocco4116 Rite On!

  • My Dad is still living. He turns 90 this M. I am writing a book about him

  • @Coegg5 Your dad is still living? I would really love to read and learn more about him.

  • @57Will He is still living. He turns 90 May 12th. He still has music for sale. He and I are stilll working on the book about him. I'll see him May 5th. Thanks for your interest in my Dad.

  • @Coegg5 You're very welcome. Glad to hear he is still living. Anxious to read that book when it comes out. Are any of the members of his band still living as well?

  • @57Will The lady in the picture blowing with my Dad is my mother Marie, she played/traveled in the Dad's band. Changed her name to Marie Stone to travel with him. they frowned on married couples in those days to play in the same band. I mention this in the book. My mom passed away 8 years ago. I think one of the band members on some of his most recent albums is still living. His name is karl the drummer. I'll ask Daddy when I see him May 5th.

  • @Coegg5 That was your mom blowing on the sax in the pic with your dad? Sorry to learn of her passing. I remember seeing the name "Marie Eggleston" on the liner notes of the "Honkers And Bar Walkers" album that "Big Heavy" was on. I know that female sax players were not all that common in the field of R&B in those days. Didn't know she changed her name to Marie Stone. Was it her doing the sax solo on "Big Heavy", or was it your dad?

  • @57Will My mom used the ston letters from Eggleston "ston" and put the E from our last name in front of that. You refer to the music as R & B. Dad refers to his music as Jazz. Yeah, my mom played in an all female band once upon a time. i miss my mom too. My Dad is playing the lead on Big Heavy.

  • @Coegg5 I'm sorry, didn't mean to offend by using "R&B" to describe your dad's music. I had heard of some all female bands. Do you recall the all female band your mom played in? So it is your dad doing the sax solo on "Big Heavy". I wasn't sure. Thanks for clearing that up.

  • @Coegg5 Connie I sent you the friend invite because I am a big fan of your Father & Mother, beautiful people & great jazz. ttyl take care

    Sincerely,

    Jason

  • @JRussoBuffaloNY Thank you. do you have any of their music?

  • Originally released on the States label.

  • The melody came from Louis Jordan's hit "Blue Light Boogie".

  • Yes, I picked up the "Honkers & Barwalkers" collection on an LP many years ago. I used to hear this great tune on the old "Time Capsule Show" , a vocal group harmony radio show out of Fordham University in the Bronx.

  • my grandaddy

  • @doublelyfe10 I don't think so. This is my biological father. I do not know you. Maybe you're just saying that for some other reason. Connie Eggleston, his oldest daughter.

  • @Coegg5 TELL THEM BIG SIS, THEY'VE GOT IT TWISTED. i do not know u either..... LIL SIS RORIE... AND GUESS WHAT THERE'S 2 MORE OF US.....2 BIG BROTHERS.....

  • The Hound's Around!!!!!

    Thanks.

This number is on Honkers and Barwalkers CD. The listing implies that it was originally - or also known as - Blue Lights Boogie. Either way, when we heard it, we knew we were in for a few hours ot great R&B, broadcast from the Zanzibar, of course.

Now all you have to do is try and dig up an old commercial the Hound did for Big Bob and Pal Al - The Budget Boys. Someone would have had to record that at home on a Webcor wire recorder or an early tape dec.
