What's important to remember is that if the referees had gotten the downs correct, Colorado would NOT have spiked the ball on what should have been the fourth down.
I remember watching this game and saying to my dad, "Wait a minute, isn't it third down?" when the TV screen said it was second down.
What the idiot announcers didn't know was that the Missouri fans were tearing down the goal posts because they knew they won the game the play before. They all just assumed the refs would figure out the mistake and fix it. No idea why this mistake was never fixed. This was an embarrassment to college football.
Just remember Buff fans, you had 1 loss and one tie while Georgia Tech had 1 tie. I don't care if you had a tougher schedule you still had 1 loss and one tie and this game. I hope you cherish that season because from now on you suck in the Pac 12 and you sucked in the Big 12 too.
@SuperBoobTube420, no the record speaks for it self for Georgia Tech 0 losses. They also played a then #2 Virginia team that no gave Georgia Tech a chance. I despise everything Missouri but they got robbed that day, much like they did on the kicked ball in 1997 against Nebraska. Its funny that both of those missed calls ended up winning the other team a share of a national title eventually.

The sad truth is, this isn't the first time it's happened in college football. It happened at least two other times in history. The first time, the winning coach forfeited the victory. I swear Colorado winning the national championship that year (even if they were co-champs) was one of the biggest screwups in recent college football history.
The funniest part is, even with five downs he still didn't make it in. But somehow he got credit for the touchdown anyway, and without reply and only 2 seconds left, it was all over. The 1990 CU team had the thinnest claim to a national title in modern football history.

@xbuff16, nice try but not a chance. He just barely got the team together enough to spike the ball with two seconds left, no way would they have been able to set up a decent play.
There is an excellent story written on espn's website about this, including video with CU's former center, and McCartney himself apologizing, because they both say they knew.
...What is interesting the referees were waving their hands in the air and stopped the clock at 31 sec, probably to move the chains. Then Johnson takes the snap and spikes the ball only to stop the clock that is already stopped. That was the first down.
Then the announcers started to call 2nd down first down.

Actually strangely enough, there was a similar instance seven years later where Scott Frost found Matt Davison after a Nebraska receiver kicked the ball to Davison. Missouri fans stormed the field and tried to tear the goalposts down, but the game was still not over yet! I love watching these Missouri (or should I say Misery) fans celebrate too early
The thing that strikes me most about this play was not the 5th down, surprisingly. It's the fact that the Missouri football players and fans had celebrated too early thinking they had won, but once the ref signaled touchdown, Colorado players then celebrated
CONTINUED-- cause the game was over, after a Les Miles type of call but absolutely no one noticed it until after the game was over. That just stinks for those players, but they never should have allowed it to happen like that in the first place. ROLL TIDE
Haha. That is pitiful. How does no one notice that? You would think that with all of the player, the coaches, the assistants, the media, etc.., that someone would have done something. But on 4th down when CU spiked the ball to stop the clock, the game was technically over and you would have expected the Missouri players to start celebrating
And don't feel bad for Missouri either, none of their players or coaching staff complained after the spike on 4th down. There were 40 seconds to bring up the error to the officials, if they did the refs would have possibly realized their mistake and taken the ball from Colorado after the true 4th down. The announcer was even dead wrong.
Just an all around sloppy effort by everybody involved. Obviously the refs for their blunder, but also both coaching staffs need to take some blame. Colorado had a time out and plenty of time left, yet somehow needed to spike the ball twice on 5 plays inside the 5.
1st and goal, spiked to stop the clock. 2nd and goal, run up the middle to the one. 3rd and goal, called timeout, then stood up at the one. 4th and goal, hurry up to the line and spike the ball, (should have been a turnover on downs) 5th and goal qb keeper for the win. end of story.
It still didnt look like CU guy got in the endzone...looks like he was down inches in front of the goalline....just a badly called game but they happen from time to time...
I was at this game 20 years ago and I can tell you refs where paid off !! what all the refs on the field could not count !!! ??? this was 20 years ago today this shit pisses me off every time i think about it i hope your ready for an ass whopping saturday colorado becuase were going to fuck u guys up MIZZOU-RAH
Meh. They had an extra timeout and only ran 3 offensive plays with 2 spikes. Substitute a spike with a first down and you technically have the same result. Yes it was a huge mistake, but 20 years later everyone needs to get over it.
It seems like CU packed long cleats for a game on astroturf from the way they were slipping around out there. If that tight end keeps his footing at the 2:46 mark this is a non issue because there was a blown coverage and he would've scored.
@ColonelMayonnaise Colorado players slipped 90+ times on the OmniTurf this game. Mizzou didn't water it like they normally did and wore longer cleats. The Buffs wore AstroTurf cleats - didn't bring any other shoes - and slipped all day. No one mentions how the Buffs almost lost this game because of an unfair advantage like that.
@Bradical26 It seems to me that longer cleats would've caused more slippage. I don't think Mizzou did anything deliberate to make the field slick. Just goes to show you how shitty that turf from the 80s and 90s used to be. I think Eric Bienemy had something like 220 yards on Mizzou in this game, on a non slick surface he probably would've broken 300. With all that being said though, Mizzou got hosed.
2007: Beat Kansas to go to #1, get smoked in Big 12 Title Game, then Kansas gets to go to a BCS bowl over Mizzou by being inactive? Don't get that one.
Yeesh. Mizzou gets gypped a bit in football, don't they?
It's all my dad could talk about this weekend. He's still fuming over this game and the Nebraska game. I forgot about the Big 12 debacle because it honestly pales in comparison to shenanigans like this.
@ryanmartin131 Thats another truth. He wasnt in the end zone. Mizzou absolutely beasted those last 5 plays and stopped them everytime. The reason CU won; the refs. The old Big 8 refs knew Colorado had a chance to get the NT. They WERE good enough. they didnt want to blow it, why not help out.
@Kailuaguy82 Well, they "won" the championship. Shared the championship with Georgia Tech, actually, who should have won it outright. It wasn't just Mizzou that got screwed over by this game.
The most BIZZARE ending to a college game, EVER. Even worse than Cal/Stanfod 1982 ("band on the field" game).
First, the game should have BEEN over if there was SAND under the TURF so the players wouldnt keep SLIPPING.
Second, on the final play of the game, Missouri thinks they won (especially that one dummy who was prematurely excited). The fans ran out on the field, only to feel REAL STUPID on the field.
And if it couldnt get any worse, they discovered that there were 5 DOWNS!
@beckyhammonbest No I think the "sucks" mantra goes to the team that gets beat by 45 to a middle of the road pac 10 team. Looks like Cal showed CU to their rightful seat at the little kids table that they will soon be occupying with Washington State in the Pac-10. Its the Pac 10, Brutha!!!!!
Mizzou's coaching staff blew it ! It was a fifth down. I'm not so sure the QB made it in on the last play. Would have loved to have seen it from the goal line angle. I think that's why the fans ran on the field---they could he didn't get in. But, things happen in games. It's our mutal hatred of Colorado, that makes this sooooooooo crappy.
If the refs had said it was fourth down, the buffs would not have spiked it. They could have run their second play call, but the refs said it was 3rd down.
Well... I'm not sure why the officials decided at the time to call back the first down, (Spike #1) but once they did that was it. Colorado didn't cheat by listening to the refs, and Miss didn't object at the call when it happened. Certainly if it hadn't been 1st down still, Colorado wouldn't have chosen to hand Miss a turnover by spiking on the fourth.
The problem has been addressed within the comments. After the 1st and Goal spike, the refs get together. It's clear that they decided that the play didn't count because the chains had not been set yet. They flipped the marker from 2nd to 1st. That's why the announcer says "Second err I mean 1st down"
We are used to the in depth coverage of today that didn't exist then and it was never explained.
@CrimsonFlameRTR If that's the case, why didn't the clock run when the chains were set. Colorado didn't use a TO so why didn't the clock resume? The clock finally started at the next snap.
Who knows what would have happened if they had kept proper track of the downs. CU wouldn't have run the same plays.
GT was a joke. They played a soft schedule and got too much credit for beating an overrated UVA team that finished 8-4. GT brought most of its team back the next year, got waxed in week 1 by Penn State, and was never heard from again.
CU played one of the toughest schedules in CFB history, with 3 OOC opponents that would win their respective leagues. They deserved the title.
The announcers are not to blame . While viewers saw the TV indicating the correct down, the announcers were looking at the REFS down marker for the indication of which down it was - the wrong down.
There is NO question about any of all the above....the refs, and announcers and anyone associated with this game should have been fired-there was NO DOUBT 5 downs-secondly Georgia Tech should have won the outright National Title- they went unblemished and were the best team in the country...end of debate.
@MGPinkerton Colorado Beat washington, ranked 5, notre dame 6, tied tennessee, 8, beat texas 12, beat oklahoma 17, and nebraska AT NEBRASKA IN MISERABLE WEATHER, no 24. Georgia tech played only Clemson 9, Virginia 23, and Nebraska on a neutral site in florida, 24. Their one tie was to North Carolina, who finished 6-4-1. CU's only loss was to Illinois at illinois, ranked 25. CU caught a break here, but if it were switched, mizzou would take the win no doubt. CU=1990 CHAMPS
Georgia Tech was the only undefeated team in the 1990 college football season, and they beat #1 UVA in their house earlier in the year. Colorado lost a game and won their last one on a 5th down... you tell me who deserves the full title.
To those that are calling for the firing of the umpires and announcers... look at the date, this game was 20 years ago, doubt very much that many of them are still playing.
And if they are, what would you accomplish by firing them now, 20 years after the "offense"?

@Longfellow321 Yeah, right. The ACC was such a powerhouse... GA Tech's schedule was so tough... They had an unblemished record - no wait, they had a tie... You people are fools. Colorado played for the NC in '89 and lost, and were an elite team the rest of the decade. GA Tech was never ranked the rest of the '90s. Colorado was the best team by a mile.
@Bradical26 dude, we aren't talking about the rest of the 90's. we are talking about 1990. georgia tech was the only undefeated team. the reason georgia tech was #1 in one poll was because of the nebraska coach, who was the only team in the nation to play both colorado and georgia tech, who voted for tech because he knew they were the better team. oh and by the way georgia tech was ranked in 1992,1996,1997,1998 and 1999.
@Longfellow321 Tom Osborne had it out for the Buffs and voted them #4 - are you aware of Nebraska-Colorado's rivalry, especially in the '90s? It was personal. Byt he way your rankings are waaay off, you're right though GA Tech was ranked in 1997 - #25 in one poll. It took them 7 years to even be ranked again! CU was ranked every year between, usually in the Top 5. Colorado was so much better. GA Tech 1990 = Utah 2004 or Boise 2009, if those teams had a tie... pretenders
@mazm2k yeah, but Colorado wouldn't have spiked the ball on fourth down if they'd known it was fourth down. So they didn't get an extra chance to score. It all came down Missouri needing to stop a Colorado play. And they didn't.
the 1990 colorado team was good. but there is no way way in heck they deserved to be national champs. if they were undefeated otherwise it would be another issue. but when they lost and tied in addition to this HORRIBLE mistake. worst call in the last 20 years
That was the worst officiated college game in the history of NCAA.....CJ didn't even cross goal line on 5th down until he rolled over it. I think the crew was suspended for the whole next season. They needed to be fired and never work a game again if 7 guys can't keep track of downs.
colorado football is a pathetic excuse. they're only title is one they had to share with georgia tech, a team equally as shitty. they lost this game, tied another, and lost another one. and oh ya they're orange bowl 'victory' was horse shit too. what a crock of shit.
Definitely shouldn't have gone CU's way, but it did. CU wasn't trying to pull one over on anyone, Mizzou just got boned.
But anyone who knows anything about sports will acknowledge that weird shit happens to teams during a championship season. Tiny events that somehow keep the season alive. This is true in any sport.
It would have been a huge, huge travesty had this happened at Folsom Field. Thank God it was at Mizzou or we'd never hear the end of it.
This game saved Colorado's season. I not knocking the Buffs it was the official's fault for the screw up, and Missouri got shafted big time. I think Ga Tech was the ultimate losers here because they were robbed of what could have been an outright national title instead of a split.
All of you hating on Missouri can eat a dick, obviouly the Tigers got fucked over with a 2nd down that did not occur when it was supposed to. Bull shit right here.
And the biggest failures here are the announcers: one dude caught it earlier.....and the other one was like..."Der der der...oh yeah....i don't know the rules to this game." And then they just missed it, showing replays and whatnot.....terrible.
Most people watching the game live assumed the first down snap had apparently not counted because the chains were not yet set. The refs were not on the same page as to whether that snap counted. The umpire told the side judge to flip the down indicator from 2 back to 1. The coaches saw that and adjusted their playcalling accordingly.
In retrospect, the first snap should have counted. But apparently the ref in charge felt it shouldn't have. So the real mistake was made at the beginning. If they had decided to correct the mistake after Johnson spiked the ball on 4th down (what CU assumed was 3rd down) it would've been a major screw job on CU.
Stole an NC from Georgia Tech.

1st down, spiked the ball
2nd down, run/ called timeout
3rd down, run
4th down spiked the ball
5th down run the ball
...What is interesting the referees were waving their hands in the air and stopped the clock at 31 sec, probably to move the chains.

I love watching these Missouri (or should I say Misery) fans celebrate too early
boygenius88 1 year ago
The thing that strikes me most about this play was not the 5th down, surprisingly. It's the fact that the Missouri football players and fans had celebrated too early thinking they had won, but once the ref signaled touchdown, Colorado players then celebrated
boygenius88 1 year ago
@boygenius88 If anything, they celebrated one play too late. I'm sure they already knew that they won the game. Your logic is flawed.

CONTINUED-- cause the game was over, after a Les Miles type of call but absolutely no one noticed it until after the game was over. That just stinks for those players, but they never should have allowed it to happen like that in the first place. ROLL TIDE
jlwalden21 1 year ago
Haha. That is pitiful. How does no one notice that? You would think that with all of the player, the coaches, the assistants, the media, etc.., that someone would have done something. But on 4th down when CU spiked the ball to stop the clock, the game was technically over and you would have expected the Missouri players to start celebrating

dougbarrett619 1 year ago
And don't feel bad for Missouri either, none of their players or coaching staff complained after the spike on 4th down. There were 40 seconds to bring up the error to the officials, if they did the refs would have possibly realized their mistake and taken the ball from Colorado after the true 4th down. The announcer was even dead wrong.
steeles21 1 year ago
Just an all around sloppy effort by everybody involved. Obviously the refs for their blunder, but also both coaching staffs need to take some blame. Colorado had a time out and plenty of time left, yet somehow needed to spike the ball twice on 5 plays inside the 5.
steeles21 1 year ago
Not only did CU get an extra down but video footage from the other side shows he never makes the end zone for the TD.
golb0016 1 year ago
1st and goal, spiked to stop the clock. 2nd and goal, run up the middle to the one. 3rd and goal, called timeout, then stood up at the one. 4th and goal, hurry up to the line and spike the ball, (should have been a turnover on downs) 5th and goal qb keeper for the win. end of story.
Honesty Fail.

It seems like CU packed long cleats for a game on astroturf from the way they were slipping around out there. If that tight end keeps his footing at the 2:46 mark this is a non issue because there was a blown coverage and he would've scored.
ColonelMayonnaise 1 year ago
@ColonelMayonnaise Colorado players slipped 90+ times on the OmniTurf this game. Mizzou didn't water it like they normally did and wore longer cleats. The Buffs wore AstroTurf cleats - didn't bring any other shoes - and slipped all day. No one mentions how the Buffs almost lost this game because of an unfair advantage like that.
Bradical26 1 year ago
@Bradical26 It seems to me that longer cleats would've caused more slippage. I don't think Mizzou did anything deliberate to make the field slick. Just goes to show you how shitty that turf from the 80s and 90s used to be. I think Eric Bienemy had something like 220 yards on Mizzou in this game, on a non slick surface he probably would've broken 300. With all that being said though, Mizzou got hosed.
ColonelMayonnaise 1 year ago
1990: Colorado's 5th down
1997: Nebraska's kickball catch
2007: Beat Kansas to go to #1, get smoked in Big 12 Title Game, then Kansas gets to go to a BCS bowl over Mizzou by being inactive? Don't get that one.

NextStep21 1 year ago
Well... I'm not sure why the officials decided at the time to call back the first down, (Spike #1) but once they did that was it. Colorado didn't cheat by listening to the refs, and Miss didn't object at the call when it happened. Certainly if it hadn't been 1st down still, Colorado wouldn't have chosen to hand Miss a turnover by spiking on the fourth.

what a terrible run!!!!!
axe1405 1 year ago

Bradical26 1 year ago
@Bradical26 dude, we aren't talking about the rest of the 90's. we are talking about 1990. georgia tech was the only undefeated team. the reason georgia tech was #1 in one poll was because of the nebraska coach, who was the only team in the nation to play both colorado and georgia tech, who voted for tech because he knew they were the better team. oh and by the way georgia tech was ranked in 1992,1996,1997,1998 and 1999.
Longfellow321 1 year ago
@Longfellow321 Tom Osborne had it out for the Buffs and voted them #4 - are you aware of Nebraska-Colorado's rivalry, especially in the '90s? It was personal. Byt he way your rankings are waaay off, you're right though GA Tech was ranked in 1997 - #25 in one poll. It took them 7 years to even be ranked again! CU was ranked every year between, usually in the Top 5. Colorado was so much better. GA Tech 1990 = Utah 2004 or Boise 2009, if those teams had a tie... pretenders

But anyone who knows anything about sports will acknowledge that weird shit happens to teams during a championship season. Tiny events that somehow keep the season alive. This is true in any sport.

phillyphan801 2 years ago 2
Most people watching the game live assumed the first down snap had apparently not counted because the chains were not yet set. The refs were not on the same page as to whether that snap counted. The umpire told the side judge to flip the down indicator from 2 back to 1. The coaches saw that and adjusted their playcalling accordingly.
loyalbuff 2 years ago
So in actuality, it wasn't really a 5th down, albeit it looks like it?
phillyphan801 2 years ago
In retrospect, the first snap should have counted. But apparently the ref in charge felt it shouldn't have. So the real mistake was made at the beginning. If they had decided to correct the mistake after Johnson spiked the ball on 4th down (what CU assumed was 3rd down) it would've been a major screw job on CU.
loyalbuff 2 years ago
