i was able to sit assistant concertmaster in an orchestra and we had yoyo play this piece. trust me its like 999999999999x better when ur next to him playing it. hes truly a genious
It is a really good song! It is weird that the conductor doesn't use a baton, but he does a great job! Yo-yo Ma, what can you say, brilliant! I really like the cello and clarinet, the players are great!
BIzarre: I just realized that the horn player has his assistant play a note so he can take a breath during the solo. Thought it an interesting little trick.
@OzzyKingofKings found this from wikipedia: "Most horn sections today also have an assistant who doubles the 1st horn part for selected passages joining in loud parts, playing instead of the principal if there is a 1st horn solo approaching, or alternating with the principal if the part is tiring to play."
Who is the conductor? I was immediately struck by the fact that he doesn't use a baton. I wonder if he is a singer, or normally conducts choirs. They tend not to use batons.
the conductor is legendary Court Mazur ! i study in the academy of music in tel aviv and i had a master class with him .. he conducted our orchestra the heroic symphony of bethoven .
it's hard to call Pablo Casals the best when we only have very poor quality recordings of him...it seems that the elite teachers like to tell all students that Pablo is the best
Stanley Drucker (the clarinetist who served as the principal for the New York Phil for who knows...50 or more years) looks very young. This performance must have took place perhaps over 10 years ago?
Well, I am sorry. I must not know what I am thinking. However, this past New Years, I did see a live concert from the Avery Fisher hall, NY Phil, and Yo-Yo Ma playing the Dvorak on TV.
What gets me every time is ability to produce such a gorgeous, airy, yet full piano sound, and still soar above the orchestra, like at 6:42, when the second theme comes in. So beautiful.
this is a unique concerto recording I saw it and home on pbs one night and finally I found it after a long time. the french horn is absolutely beautiful and I will be learning it. I play violin now but will be learning the french horn over the summer
I love this version of the piece - listened to a couple others after this, and didn't like any of them anywhere near this well - including 2 of Rostropovich... <3
look at Jacqueline du Pré .....

there is a video here in youtube where the horn player explains this trick. Is the principal horn of the NY philharmonic the same one on the video.

Historically there have been orchestral conductors who conduct without baton. I don't really thing it matters that much.
Anyways, I think the conductor is Kurt Masur (though I'm not that familiar with him...).

The conductor, Kurt Masur, is a rather famous orchestral conductor. He does have a son, however, who is a singer.

Hey, Hldeka. I do believe that this is actually in December 2007, as a part of a New Years concert with Live from the Lincoln Center.
I may be wrong, if I am, please correct me.
battleblades 3 years ago
That's probably not correct since Stanley Drucker just looks...so young in this video. It must have been more than 5 years ago at least!

Yes, the timpanist in this video is Roland Kohloff, and he passed away in early 2006.

I remember watching this broadcast as a kid. It was '97 or so. The Schumann on the second half is very good, too.

i agree with mhorseskiz he overdoes the body movements...his mouth is often wide open and he looks a bit odd...
but his music and his sound is untouchable
damesiscool123 3 years ago
Well it actually goes naturally.
Like he feels the music and his head moves unconsciously. I'm first chair GDYO and i do that to
