I watch this in the good ol' fashioned movie way back either in 1989 or 1990 . Nothing can beat watching an old Viet Nam War movie in an old fashioned movie theartre . You can as if smell it . It feels real
I know that they made it into the embasy compound but I thought that the VC never penetrated the actual embasy.... Maybe I was mis-informed and maybe this is Hollywood.
@fubar1369 Sure did. They blew a hole in the embassy wall, charged in and occupied it for 6 hours until an Airborne unit landed on the roof and cleared them out.
@DB742 Thanks for the clarification. I seen a Vietnam documentary about the Tet Offensive that said otherwise. I wish I could remember the name of it. Sometimes it's hard to seperate reality from fiction when the producers have an agenda. Thank you for your service! I hope that all the Vietnam vets know how many Americans truly appreciated their sacrifice now as well as then.
@DB742 Further clarification.. I was under the impression that while the communists gained access to the embassy compound (grounds) that they never breached the actual embassy building. Regardless, from my understanding, the US military and allies could have won if not for the cheese dick politicians who tied one hand behind our back and gave in to the protesters who took freedom for granted and have no idea of what we actually accomplished there. Overall, a sad episode for the free world.
There's several things that kept it from being great.Hauser picking off guys with that rifle, let alone without a scope, from that distance?Ridiculous.Had there been some attacks shown at night.Made the vietnamese look like complete idiots. Some editing of hauser overacting in a scene with ermey getting drunk, the black guy turning into bruce lee out of nowhere.Could have been great. But its got good dialouge, exciting.and well staged battle scenes. That makes up for it,somewhat. ** and half stars
@pjezierski no, his character is actually a Marine Sergeant Major, who takes control of the fire base from the Army Captain in command, whom was mentally unstable and high.
*giggles* That opening "embassy" attack scene was filmed not too far from my old neighborhood. Shooting was on a school night though so I couldn't talk the old man into driving-out to see the filming.
@58jtaylor See this in Google Maps, or at least that's how it looked like from street-level, IIRC. If not there, it was nearby, going by the architecture out front.
one of my favorites, for those who live in los angeles ch 5.2 has been showing this week. It's coming up next this thursday night. I think it's 7:30 pm.
total chaos, this was vietnam. The closest I got to it was 1 mile off the coast of vietnam we were providing naval gunfire support for the marines.
I might get Hell for this, but I have to say this movie is 10x better than the Green Beret, not because that R. Lee. (which I totally respect and admire and he too served in Vietnam) is in it, but depicts the hardships and the courage of the Men in a Lone Outpost deep in Enemy Terroritory.
And its True, this movie is Overlooked and is the Most Underrated Movie compared to other Vietnam Related War Movies.
nice trailer, but this movie sucked. i watched it today and it was so corny. I saw a guy get hit by an ak and his back had a baseball sized hole that oozed blood. this was more of a shoot-em-up action film rather than a war movie. best part is when murphy dies
They should reissue a dvd version with a couple changes.First take out all the swashbuckling cheesy music when fighting happens,ALL of it! Second get the rights to the band's ''tears of rage'' and play it at the end.Music is important in nam films.Because it was important to the guys there.
@NJburbsSeeker I gotta agree man, it not like other Vietnam films out there,it wasnt all going crazy but just a very good representation of the actual scale of Vietnam and R Lee Ermey was just too good
Great film. Trailer's only downfall is the music, I don't think that it conveys the proper feeling and atmosphere for the film. Other than that it's pretty good.
The two best Vietnam War movies I have ever watched are the Seige of Firebase Gloria with R. Lee Ermy and Wings Hauser and Platoon Leader with Michael Dudikoff and William Smith. Compared to these two movies, almost all other Vietnam War movies suck and that includes Platoon, Apocalypse Now, FMJ, CoW and the worst one ever Hamburger (and fries cat) Hill. Two perfect Vietnam movies that came out practically at the same time, PL in 1988 and SoFG in 1989.You won't find better movies than these 2.
Ermey, is awesome! He doesn't act, he is just himself in front of the cameras.
You left out the best line of the movie: "Charlie ws throwing every man at us and didn't care about casualties. We probabbly would do the same if they invaded South Carolina"
i have this movie on tape and i have to say this is probably the greatest war movie i have ever seen. it has drama, great action, musics alright, and 3 major battles. im a gamer and i think they should deffinitly make this movie into a game for 360 and ps3, and its not like call of duty where you have to stay in certain areas. you can go around the entire base fighting and helping wounded out, and close quarter combat. but not alot of people know about this movie, and dont show it on tv.
Get'n shot at is a load of shit. It is no fun at all. I have only heard of this movie and haven't yet got to see it. Looking at this trailer alone makes me think it's nuts to real. True Marine Patriot here. 3 Tours total from 2000-2004. Started Both AFG and IRAQ, first in each time. Respect those before you that chewed the dirt that learned the hardest lesson to make better soliders. Semper Fi. The soliders didn't lose the war. Congressmen and Senators did.
What is a load of shit, is your so called experience. Tour in 2000 is a load of shit! You had a tour while making sandwichs at fucking Subway! Stop insulting real Marines with you're lies. Hoo-ah!
I guess I should have been clearer. 3 tours during my enlistment from 2000-04. go tug on your mother's tit. Everyone else got it but drunk at 2 am does get confusing. I am not going to play the internet sniping game, childish. If you would like to trade stories email the same handle at yahoo. I'd be happy to "prove" my time to ya. Liar??
It's ooh-rah, not hoo-ah. That's army or navy. Sorry to hear about your uncle, Thanks for his service.
Watched the VHS rip today... WOW can't believe I only found out about this a few days ago. I've watched films about Vietnam and this is definately one of the best. The acting is a little stale in places but no other is as realistic overall. I want the DVD!
I first saw this film about16 years ago and it was during the time when vietnam movies were popular, and by todays starderd I still consider it as one of the best.
Its like an extended version of "Full Metal Jacket" if R. Lee Ermy wasnt killed, and went to a firebase.
A lott of men came home from Vietnam with their genitals blown off, I saw a movie with a guy like that, during same time period as this movie, and he had difficulties iin life, you can imagine.
I have seen parts of this movie on TV in the past ,but have never been able to see the whole movie from begging to end can anyone tell how this movie ends any info would be great thanks.
One of the stars in the movie I think he played on the tv series "Tour of Duty" threw his gun down to grab a little boy, that he was attached to, and the enemy leader shot him between the legs destroying his sex organs, and he said he wasnt going home like that, so he asked R. Lee Ermy to shoot him, and he shot him in the head, very powerful acting, I give it 4 stars, my best war movie of all times.
I wonder did the enemy shoot him between legs on purpose?
I don't think so, since the Colonel was firing from the hip. I'm not doubting sex organ damage, but more likely one of the torso shots went through and damaged his spine. Because when he was laid out, he told Hafner (Ermey's character") "I can't feel nothin."
I believe theColonel did shoot him between the legs, cause if you remember, when hegot shot he immedidatly grabed his crotch and stummbled forwared like you would when hit between legs, and then the colonel picked up the boy and paused for a few seconds,
Maybe the producer was sending a message to make a good ending,
he knew the man loved children, so he took the thing away from him that gives life, maybe not, either way a powerful ending very well thought out.
A very rare "lost" film held up unconscionably from widescreen DVD release. This is one movie that deserves a box set on DVD. That it has not been on DVD is a travesty. One of the best war movies about 'nam and watching the firebase get overrun is one of many awesome scenes that depict a very realistic brutality and humanity of this war. The Marines here have one mutha' of a shootin' match. Widescreen is the only way to see this one and preferably on a big screen. CAUTION: it ain't for girls!
I met Gunny Ermey last weekend when my brother graduated from MCRD. He was collecting gifts for Toys for Tots and he looks exactly the same today as he did when this was filmed!!
this is my favorite war movie out there.once you see the combat in this movie you wanna watch it all over again its a great film.i recommend buying it for war fans out there and old veterans of the war as well.i wish they would make a video game out of this for all systems and make it very long instead of all the 2 day games you can beat that they make today.not makin fun of any of them though juss wish they were longer.but no one really knows of this movie.amazon has it.guess it was forgotten=(
They only game I found that did this war justice was MEN OF VALOR. The way the showed the Tet Offensive, Operation Hastings, etc. The SHELLSHOCK games are garbage, and pay more tribute to APOCALYPSE NOW rather than actual history. Gearbox or the Call of Duty guys needs to get on this war or even Korea.
I don't know, I actually liked Shellshock Nam '67. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much replay value. I definitely want to get Men of Valor, though. It's number one on my video game want list.
Great movie and great video...by the way someone could add some episodes from this films, like attack on the firebase and fight around the base...great job
A devastatingly realistic film-EVERYONE in it is so authentic that every time I watch it, I can't sleep for 2 days! I was on a firebase named GLORIA and goddamned if we didn't get overrun twice! A GREAT film!!!
No matter I've always hated the States for being involved in Nam, I've loved this film since I was a kid. A great picture. Too bad no one makes them this good anymore.
To Filpot: You'll have to probably go to e-bay or Amazon. com. It doesn't come in DVD only VHS. You have to be careful that you dont get a poor quality copy (Picture).
I saw this in '97 what a great fuckn war movie my favorite was when he walked around with the decapitated head- "this is corporal miller! I no longer have any respect for corporal miller! LOOK AT HIM!!!"
This is the most realistic VietNam war movie i have ever seen and i have them all. No Hollywood B.S in this movie . This movie is true to form. Also check out "84 Charlie Mopic".
Seriously we send enough shit and soon , it'll happen . Look at the new dvd from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 , if no one would've said anything, it wouldn't have happened . Let's send in all are shit to sony pictures , again about the contact info , just ask me if you don't know . I'll give ya what I got .
If you guys wanna help get this masterpiece on the proper dvd release let's all write in to sony pictures cause they do own the rights . Emails and Letters , I'll do my part , you guys have to do yours , I'm also gonna write about the big gundown . You guys need contact info , I got some
To Metadeth316: On the movie "Seige at Firebase Gloria" , You can count me in ! Those Idiots at Sony should have at least released limited editions of this movie long ago. This movie deserves to be on DVD, not those poor quality copies on VHS.
I watch this in the good ol' fashioned movie way back either in 1989 or 1990 . Nothing can beat watching an old Viet Nam War movie in an old fashioned movie theartre . You can as if smell it . It feels real

To Metadeth316: On the movie "Seige at Firebase Gloria" , You can count me in ! Those Idiots at Sony should have at least released limited editions of this movie long ago. This movie deserves to be on DVD, not those poor quality copies on VHS.
