  • Excel trick is useful

  • I also teach this in my computer and study skills course. Students really like it.  You are the only other person I've seen that knows this neat trick.

  • Thank you for the video. It's really usefull. It's nice to have the graph (the multiplied "I") directly side by side with the data at several situation (instead of making the diagram from excel).

    You can see number 23 is in third place and four, 10,16,17, I would like to generate a list of positions for any number I choose, in this case for 23 the list will be 3,4,10,16,17, how is possible to do in excel 2003.

  • It's an awful trick... It not only makes your file considerably heavier, but it's easily replaceable by so many other ways that are quicker, simpler, and lighter... Ever heard of sort? Of course 2007 and over ruins this tricks even more. I hope viewers never adapt this, I would hate to have a nation of morons doing this in all their files...

  • @helmet22fc Click the top left box, to the left of A and above row 1 to select all cells. Then data - sort, and sort by the value.

  • @Silverado31 Is there a way to sort them automatically without having to go back to Data---->Sort---->Extend All---->Sort by Value---->Total---->Descending­---->OK, each time

  • To brainstorm a bit - this model shows all the attributes so that you can drill down immediately - if you have a graph, you have to find the '10' ten and then look at the data to find Adam - it's all in one place this way - consider adding additional attributes (columns) and sorting to see patterns - add conditional formatting - change format of bars to center to see what the data shows - add a second set of bars for other data and compare them - add filtering, etc.

  • @Silverado31 Using a key is quicker: Select the colom containing the data , press F11 and you're done. still it is a nice trick, especialy useable for plain text format purposes.

  • I got it; but this may not be good to use if you are talking of 4 digit numbers thanks anyway- I learned a new trick

  • You can always add a divider to the number. For example =REPT("I";A2/100)

  • I DID agree but all you've got to do depending on size of number is to then divide it so its smaller.

    For example =REPT("I",B2) / 10. I still find it useful!

  • Not really. Making a bar chart takes more time. This was meant to be short and sweet.

    It depends on the application. If there is a set list of acceptable responses, you could use data validation and create a picklist so your users can choose the response that fits them best. That way you eliminate any possibility of unacceptable words.

    If that wont work and you want a free text field where users can write whatever they want, the best thing I can recommend is conditional formatting. If the user uses an illegal word, you can black out text by shading the cell.

  • Dont try the in cell graphing in MS Excel 2007, it's flawed. The Rept function works the best and like one person said, use ALT+219 for a better rendition.

  • Very nice use of the REPT function for those who don't have xL 2007 yet. Please post more creative tricks if you have any. Also, just an obvious modification of your tutorial for newbies...if your values are high (and the "I"s are running too long), you can divide your values: =REPT("I",A3/2) or "/3", or "/100" etc depending how high your values are.

  • You don't need 2007 to use the REPT f(x).

    I'm using Excel for Office 2000 and it works just fine.

    Also...try using a symbol instead of "I" as the repeated character.

  • I realize that you don't need 2007; I think I wasn't clear. In 2007, you have the capability of putting in bar graphs in the cells.

  • Don't worry..you were as clear as a bell. I just misread your post late last night after a tall scotch. Sorry. But I did have fun using symbols (smiley face, musical note) in the REPT function. If you had a music store and wanted to use REPT to quickly view their comparative productivity, the musical note symbol would be good to use.
