  • Great capture, thanks for uploading it. This was my first exposure to Split Enz--and all it took for me to become a dedicated fan. Lip-syncing or otherwise, at least the camptastic Solid Gold Dancers are nowhere in evidence. Meanwhile, we have a perfect three-minute pop song, a cute-as-a-button lead singer, some colorful New Wave costuming ... and it was *just* edgy enough for my Dad to sneer "Oh god, another punk rock group," which, while inaccurate, made me feel just a little rebellious. ;-)

  • Did you all know, this is the band that went on to become Crowded House?

  • @Stocky607 Well, one of them did anyway (technically one and a half I guess) =)

  • i guess the lonely dancer in the top left is the tambourine player. poor guy

  • As well as the set, costume and album cover designer, Noel was the percussionist on every album and played drums for two albums. He also did a mean spoons solo.

  • @NebMaatRe1 How does this not have more likes? Noel Crombie may not look like he does much, but he was very talented and brought a lot to the band.

  • @coath514 he just stands around in the music video too

  • @coath514 Yep, but soon he'd become a full-time instrumentalist!

  • where are the cute clowns...??

  • GREAT song-still have the 45

  • i believe they also did I Hope I Never on this show...lip syncing of course!

  • @rsimonse of course it was lip sync, it was 1980! LOL i know that when i met Neil last year and told him that i'd first seen him on Solid Gold (singing this song), he said, "Oh god! Solid Gold?!?" he was probably thinking, "Oh god, lip sync!!" but he was so gracious and so sweet! he seems like the kind of man who knows where his roots come from and is not ashamed of them. god bless him for all the wonderful music/lyrics he's turned out over the last 30 some odd years!!

  • @rsimonse "i believe they also did I Hope I Never on this show"

Yes, that’s true. I remember it well because I had videotaped it, and I watched it a lot. It was my introduction to Split Enz. I’m guessing this was true for a lot of Split Enz fans in the U.S..

  • When I met Neil last August in Austin, I mentioned that this was the first time I'd ever seen him (on Solid Gold), and I think it freaked him out a bit. He kinda rolled his eyes and said, "oh god, Solid Gold!" and laughed! hahaha What a great guy he is in person! And what a fantastic and talented songwriter/singer!!

  • wow nice video! thanks

  • A classic early 80's

  • @ramadarose Yes he is still hot !

  • i still want that outfit Neil's wearing, doggone it! he is so freakin HOT, and still is! what an artist!

  • you got music to play, at same pace, to match as there singing, or something, cause music and them, dont match lol

  • the first of Neil's songs that got me hooked (and looking for more), and the video that made me fall in love! :-)

  • The Goofy things bands have to do on TV! A classic song of the 1980s.

  • Love it ...have done for years.

  • i want that outfit Neil's wearing, it's so retro and i could get away with it now! LOLOL

  • @mystered probably to mimic the "live" part of it. they still were an amazing band, and Neil an awesome singer/songwriter. finally got to meet him in Austin last month, an amazing moment in my life!

  • it's like "baby" Neil... wow, it really has been 30 years, hasn't it? i was 12 or 13 when i first saw this. all i can say is wow!!! okay, i can also say... he was soooo freakin cute as a younger lad; he grew into a very handsome man! and his talent has only gotten better with age as well. WOW!

  • thank god for technology today, what with cordless microphones! that damned mic Neil's holding onto must have been a real pain in the u-know-what to deal with!

  • @ramadarose41 Since they're clearly miming I don't know why they needed a cord anyway. Great song in any case.

  • and he STILL has that callick!! LMAO too cute and hilarious!

  • what is that little "i'm adorable, look at me" look he has at 2:56?? i mean, he's already adorable at that point. guess he was trying to sell it! LOL too cute!!

  • OMG i've been looking for this video for YEARS, and was beginning to think that maybe my li'l sister and i had dreamed it up, or saw it on another show in the U.S. in my heart, i always knew it was on Solid Gold that i first saw Neil Finn singing this song!! thanks MyVHSArchives, you made my life so real now!!

  • God i adore Neil even then :)
