hey ur that girl on dsmtuners wow... but like the project u did how much did u spend on the car... and wasn't their a problem with the car when u first got it??? and what kinda of head light are thos they make ur car look pissed off
Holy fuck that looks just like mine cept mines rims are black, and my tails are blacked out and I have black angel-eye headlamps... :D gs-ts rock. Mitsubishi should have never stopped makin them.
VERRRRY old vid. The setup has completely changed (to say the least) I just dropped a brand new forged assembly into it, BB, Cryo, the works. I'm hoping to hit high 400's at least. ;)
Big DSM fan here... only have my 1.8L laser though right now.
Soon as spring hits I'm selling my 350 WS6 Bird and getting a DSM. After riding in my buddies 12 sec Talon thats in one of my vids - I know I have to get one :P
Again, sharp car - I'm a bigger fan of 1g's but I have a secret love for the 97-99 Black/Dark Green eclipses.
But I've been in a 303hp civic (its in one of my vids) and before he got radials he'd spin through 1st/2nd/3rd and one time actually tried to spin and spun halfway through 4th
Sorta. It doesn't 'give' horsepower. On a Turbo car, it allows the exhaust to flow more freely so the turbo can spool up faster, and provide boost more quickly. This does allow the motor to produce a few more horses, due to less restriction.
Remember kids, modification doesn't "Add" horsepower. It allows the motor to run more efficiently. Which lets it make a few more.
Im new to the whole dsm theme, mostly know about hondas but i was thinking about getting myself a DSM as well since i have respect for every type of tuner out there. Can any1 explain to me why most people get 6 bolts for the newer eclipses? not sure if that really is popular but around where i live people do the 6 bolt instead of the 7, any real reason why???
the only thing that you should try to pop is a 1st gen 4g turbo head and intake... bigger ports... more airflow... helps if you get a set of BC cams too!
aw man a 97 eclipse is a great car man and you can buy a used on for like just 2000$.Great first car especially the 4wd 5spd manual tran ones.can wait till i buy my first car.
I've already putk upwards of 15k into my GST and I'm running about 450ish. 750hp is not an easy thing to do. DSMTunersDOTcom needs to be your favorite site right now.
the 4g63 is in all tubo model eclipses some are 6 bolt and some years are 7. the 6 bolt is the way to go and thats whats in the evos. i had a7 bolt built the whole thing and it just wasnt a 6 bolt thats all i can say you can tell easily by the intake pipe, facing the car intake goes up left side engine bay its a 7 right side its a 6.
Wrong. The intake is exactly the same on both the 6 and 7 bolts. The only visible difference is the number of bolts on the flywheel. The 6 bolt was completely discontinued after about mid 1992 so Evos do not in fact have 6 bolts. There really is very little difference between the two engines and it's a common misconception that one is better than the other. Certain parts on both are better than the other but overall, they're about the same.
does the streetlight flywheel allow you to drive around normal? I want one but i want to make should i will be able to drive normally but when i race i want to tell the difference from the stock flywheel. pst me bak and let me know something b4 i buy it
@BitchWABishi you can actually see the difference in a few other areas on the oil pan, and the front of the block th 7 bolt has a small water line under the big one i belive cant remember what my old one looked like lol........ Sexy car btw mines white gonna debut it and its new engine and setup at IFO in october gonna kill me sone honduhs
yea I grew up racing motocross and working on bikes and I crushed one of my vertebraes last july and thats when i decided to go with something a little less dangerous. I love working on engines and I want to get something I can work on and be proud of 10 years from now. Hey thanks for the advice and if i get any more questions i might have to bother you some more haha.
So i have a 2001 Eclipse GT 3.0 V6.. im pretty sure im selling it. Would it be worth it to get an older GS-T or GSX? I really want to do turbo upgrades but doing them on a 3g eclipse is damn near impossible. Just wondering.
None taken, the 3g's feel like they are made of lead, and im getting really sick of the body style. Its too curvy and bubbly. Any suggestions on which year or if I should go gst or gsx?
boost is a term used when talking about a turbo car...boost it what a turbo gives ur car, more boost more power, but do some work on your motor befor u start pushing high boost.
Well...you didn't really describe WHAT boost is. Boost is the term used to describe the output of forced induction. "FI" is the forcing of EXTRA air into each cylinder by use of a turbo/supercharger/blower/etc. Boost is measured in LBS or BAR. Most prefer LBS. When someone says they're running 12lbs of boost that means they are putting 12lbs of air pressure into each cylinder. A naturally aspirated car uses only the suction of the piston moving down in the chamber to bring air into the cylinder.
Eh...42 is WAYYY too big for me. I already deal with lag from my cams...don't want to add TURBO lag to that. ;) Plus...this is a REALLY old vid. There's a newer one with lots more up to date info.
They're really not that bad. Crankwalk is WAY overplayed...it's not as wide spread as people think it is. And a good 7 bolt...is effing bullet proof. :D
Yeah it really isn't that popular the only reason everyone talks about how much it does happen is because when it happens to someone they freak out about it and dont know what to do. I've owned 3 different 2G DSM's and I had Crankwalk in one of them. But that was only like 2 weeks after I bought it so it wasn't really a shocker. I expect the person before me thought it was a race car(It was stock) so he prolly beat the hell out of it... now its an awesome car with a nice new motor
what can you do to prevent or fix crank walk after it happens, change crank shaft? i heard it is due to oil squerters but the 99 year gst are crank walk proof because mistu fixed the issue.
well really all you can do is try to prevent it... yes the oil squirters was a problem but the main reason it happens is the 7 bolt motors have faulty thrust bearings in them... I would say if you have a 2G DSM with over 100K miles and you want it to stay strong do a full rebuild on it... replace all bearings oil pump-sending unit and then do a compression test to see if your at the right spec. when my motor experienced crankwalk it did it for about 15 min and was Shot could not run ever again
I C thnx bro, do you have a ball park figure of how much a full rebuild or crankwalk proofing a gst motor would cost? Im going back an fourth between buying an integra then turboing or just going with a gst and modding a little.
Nope, not as of yet. I did run it once, but I had a massive vacuum leak and couldn't hit my powerband...started backfiring/stuttering at like 4k...so I ran like a 16 :(
I'm looking to pickup a DSM, but from browsing VFAQ/Tuners it seems that it would be a good idea to retain my cheap DD if I picked up a DSM. Is it ok to utilize a DSM as a daily with little to no mechanical experience?
Well...I mean when you say mechanical experience, do you mean with these cars or all together? If you don't have much mechanical experience, it might be a little difficult for you to mod, but anyone can learn. I started with this car, and I knew absolutely nothing about cars. But with my dads help (he's a 30 year veteran mechanic) and a lot of hard work, I can work on my car with no problems at all. It just takes work.
Aside from the basic mechanics and general maintenance of cars, not much. I think the DSM is a good platform in terms of power to work with, and if I had the funds/knowledge, in terms of mods and stuff, I'd go bolt ons and possibly 50trim or an E316G, but thats way down the road.
My Dad said if I can handle the insurance payments and keep gas in both cars, he doesn't see a problem in it. I can't find any 1G's in my area but theres a few GS-T's and TSi's here and there (no GSX's)
hey nice car i was just wondering how much work comes out of a car this old you know like how much work would i have to do on one if i were to buy one
Lol, more work than you can imagine! I've owned the car only since Oct 2006 but I've got about 13k invested in the car itself, no including OEM crap, then I've got a halfway done .04 stroker and 1mm over head sitting out in my barn waiting for me to finish. It's an addictive thing...and a money pit. lol
If you get a stock GST in good condition, they're pretty damn reliable...actually...my GST has only left me stranded once when the tranny blew up, but it was down for nearly 6 months...ouch.
I went through 2 of em lol both 97's next time i'll make sure it's a project car & not a main source, 10 year old dsm's what do you expect, & very stingy with the lube on the camshaft. They can break your heart but very addictive i'm 33 & still looking to get another one....OH YEAH NICE ONE!
are they reliable for daily drives like an 85k gst 97 with 15k mods done to it and its for 6500 but i own an svt contour it 75k miles what should i doo
DSM's have a reputation for breaking down on you. But any car over 10years old or older is gonna need a good tune up. If you buy an Eclipse Turbo, make sure you have a couple of Grand to rebuild the entire engine and Tranny.
Nice mine is exactly like this but a 98 gst !!!!!! Proud owner

If you are pushing 18psi in a stock motor. You are bound to blow the motor cause of too much pressure.
Smokie420ish 2 years ago
@Smokie420ish
these engines can handle a good amount of boost. they can handle 20psi all day long.
themisfitwolfie 1 year ago
Then why don't they set them around that? Why do they only keep them around 7-9psi on a stock motor. I am just saying and wondering why they dont.

Wrong. The intake is exactly the same on both the 6 and 7 bolts. The only visible difference is the number of bolts on the flywheel.

Nope, I still have a stock 7-bolt in it and I'm now pushing close to the 450hp mark. :)

hey nice car i was just wondering how much work comes out of a car this old you know like how much work would i have to do on one if i were to buy one
dramaisthebest 4 years ago
Lol, more work than you can imagine! I've owned the car only since Oct 2006 but I've got about 13k invested in the car itself, no including OEM crap, then I've got a halfway done .04 stroker and 1mm over head sitting out in my barn waiting for me to finish. It's an addictive thing...and a money pit. lol
If you get a stock GST in good condition, they're pretty damn reliable...actually...my GST has only left me stranded once when the tranny blew up, but it was down for nearly 6 months...ouch.
BitchWABishi 4 years ago
I went through 2 of em lol both 97's next time i'll make sure it's a project car & not a main source, 10 year old dsm's what do you expect, & very stingy with the lube on the camshaft. They can break your heart but very addictive i'm 33 & still looking to get another one....OH YEAH NICE ONE!
kimera808 3 years ago
are they reliable for daily drives like an 85k gst 97 with 15k mods done to it and its for 6500 but i own an svt contour it 75k miles what should i doo
mariox07x 4 years ago
DSM's have a reputation for breaking down on you. But any car over 10years old or older is gonna need a good tune up. If you buy an Eclipse Turbo, make sure you have a couple of Grand to rebuild the entire engine and Tranny.
