I totally disagree. Sure there are lots of desperate people online (everywhere really), but internet dating is mainly a blast, it's the lazy man's way to meeting countless women, was my prefered method.

Some tips; Always insist on several recent photos. Webcam is pretty much a must, though not everyone has one, but do try to see them on theirs.
