He gave people who had been in economic dissaray after World War One (despite being on the winning side..thank you Britain) hope, patriotism and built up the country into the greatness that it is today. I'm sorry, but saying 'he lost, and history is written by the victors' is simply not good enough as an argument. Especially not when you actually look at what kind of an impact he had on the Italian economy. You can't just write that off saying 'Oh, the victors wrote that.'
But Mussolini's handling of the Italian economy was laughable. He intially attempted to reduce industrial expansion, his handling of the lira was disastrous, and he over-centralised the government ridiculously. He constantly ignored (or dismissed) anyone who tried to tell him how ludicrously under-equipped and under-prepared the Italian army was (and that was his fault too). I think he gets bad press for a very good reason...
