Shizzle. I've tried two of these and all my (common black) ants do is sit and die. Later on water condenses inside the box and new recruits drowned in it. In the end, the gel just went bollocks and turned into mold :(

get three ant farms, connect them with plastic tubing, fill them with three different species, and watch the ensuing action. you could even put food stores in neutral zones to be contested and fought over.

3. It says you don't need to feed them, but you do because the gel only feeds workers and not larvae.

4.The colony sits on the surface.

5. Few species can actually tunnel into it. E.g. Species of Harvester ants.

6. The ants dig for a day, then seem to give up.

i got this, and then i got a queen ant outside ( stinks for that ant colony waiting for its queen back home) on the sidewalk, so far i have around 30 ants producing everywhere! i wonder if they can trample the queen... anyway its so funny when you go outside, grab a random ant, throw it in and have the whole entire colony in there detroy the ant, totally outnumber it ! xD hey, the more they eat of something other than the gel the longer itll take for the ants to die out (i think) :P

In real life, though, their tunnel systems grow to be kilometres long in total with air ducts and other cool stuff, all connected; so this tiny box does not reveal the ants' digging potential at all. But then again, I don't know what the purpose of this was.

Actually "red" ants' (I'm assuming you mean Myrimica Rubra not Lasius Flavus) bites do not hurt it is their sting which hurts however if you mean a red Formica type ant they spray acid ... please be clear on what you mean by "red" ant

You're right it isn't a normal ant habitat and can't last longer than a year because a queen ant cannot survive in a gel habitat

The queen ant can survive, you simply need to provide ants more appropriate food. The workers will thrive on the gel, but the queens require different nutrition. There were never any claims that the habitant was meant to support a queen on its own. At least in the US, it is illegal to sell a queen ant, so you would have to dig one up yourself, and feed it appropriately.

As far as the gel being translucent, the ants don't really care about that. Their tunneling behavior is the same as in sand.
