  • haha nice one!

  • Why, thanks, graven! Much appreciated. Thanks for comin' on in! -Kp

  • What's with the pronounciation of Joaquin?

  • Ohh, I know, I know! I record these things on little sleep (I see the movie, come home and do some improv in front of the camera)...and as soon as I'd uploaded it and watched -- I realized what I'd done. Sighhh. I'll never live that down! Thx for stoppin' by tho'! -Kp

  • Heh well if you have an excuse then it's fine ^_^ It's not the easiest name to say with little sleep!

  • Thx, Hann. Yeah, I dunno where my head was at. Focusing on making an entertaining review I guess....er, I hope. =] -Kp

  • LOL @ this garbage being better than the departed

  • Sorry, Crook...I just felt The Departed was obvious and typical. No real performances. Nicholson was basically doing his Joker bit. This flick was a little less obvious and had some good turns in the plot in spite of some melodrama. -Kp

  • I wish...ha no hes just my 'work partner' and hes an angry mother licker!

  • Sorry about that my partner gets very angry, i think your review is perfectly fine.

  • Interesting, Boom...seems I was Siskel & Eberted on my own review. Crazy that. -Kp

  • Or...wait, Boom...did you mean SEXUAL partner? -Kp

  • As funny as coming home to find your family and pets slain and desicrated.

long winded and pointless, don't quit your dayjob.

Your film review isnt bad but why must you drag it down with piss poor jokes.

  • jake lol

  • decent review and hilarios lol ur 1 step closer to that kit kat

  • Ha! Thanks, Jake! -Kp

  • heheha gotta love him, nice reply

  • Hey, kolle, thanks for comin' on in...which reply you referring to? Someone else's? Mine? Just curious. -Kp

  • hehe yours. :P

  • I'm with you, I prefer this film to The Departed. And WOTN was written 7 years ago and James Gray waited for Phoenix to become available to film, it's just poor timing that it was released after Departed. In areas that film lacked, this made up for it, 'Night' had real heart and an incredible Phoenix performance that trumps any actor's work in Departed. I completely agree about the car chase--great filmmaking really peaks through in this film.

  • One more thing--this film did take place in 1988, song choice and "slips" harking to previous years was done on purpose. Do you only listen to music that was made this year? Neither does Bobby. That was actually a very realistic, astute choice on Gray's part, that people are wrongly calling a mistake.

  • Hey, caleden, thanks for the behind-the-scenes info! And thx for stoppin' by!

    -Kp

  • You're more than welcome. I really like this move.

  • Darling...so funny!

  • Kisses, Odey! -Kp

  • I really hope you were being sarcastic. There is no way you can call We Own The Night better. The Departed was the only reason We Own The Night got produced in the first place.

What does "embracing Hollywood cliches" mean? You never gave an example, you just said "he shows he knows you know"... ??? You can say that about every cliche in every movie, and people do.

When I like my drama smart, I see a Scorsese movie, not a stupid James Grey movie imitating a Scorsese movie.

  • explosivo: your name is apt to your reaction. ;] 1st: Considering that NIGHT was released just under a year after Departed, I would doubt Departed had anything to do w/this getting produced. My money's on that they were filmed around the same time, this was probably delayed b/c, well, would YOU want your similar movie to go up against Scorsese?

I give no cliche examples b/c it would mean giving away 2 story points. And, no, you canNOT say all directors embrace Hollywood cliches.

  • By no means am I calling We Own the Night a bad movie. I enjoyed it immensely. However, you probably wouldn't have even heard of it had The Departed not succeeded so greatly last year. It would have had it's small limited release, then pulled out after 2 weeks and sent straight to the DVD bargain bin.

  • Schellen: I dunno -- Duvall, Wahlberg, and Phoenix are pretty big names. That is, the first two are big names, the latter somewhat. And both Wahlberg and Phoenix have worked together w/this director before. I think, even w/out The Departed, this would've gotten a lot of attention. Thanks for stickin' to your guns tho'! ;] -Kp

  • pt 2 for Explosivo:

Many directors create movies w/cliches (see my "30 Days" review), but if you watch my vid, I explain clearly what I mean by "embracing." Scorsese's Departed was predictable & tired and yet it portended to be creative and surprising. I felt departed was predictable, both in story and the performances. Finally, it's not likely that a movie released under a year after Departed was inspired by it. Movies just don't work that way. Thx for stopping by. -Kp

  • youre the man...this movie was the shit......very realistic portrayel of new york city of the late 80s...

  • Cota, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stoppin' by! -Kp

  • Pause the recording and talk to your mother you ungrateful slug! :p j/k

Interesting review. I thought The Departed was a good movie but overestimated. I'm thinking we own the night is going to be the opposite. A sleeper hit of greater quality.

  • Rel, I sure hope so! And, hey, YOU speak to my mom!! -Kp

  • Really great movie, and the chase scene is absolutely unique in comparison to every other one out there recently.

  • MLW: Ain't that scene a beauty!! -Kp

  • lol well it seems like a great film, hopefully i'll get to check it out in theaters sometime soon i work to much, and i do love the departed, and your vid was pretty funny dress up like a woman huh? lol thats funny alright peace out

  • Thanks, Stache. Uh...as for the dressing...I've no clue what you mean. I was sure I edited that out. -Kp

  • Yes - different! Gives a good idea of film thanks!

  • Thanks for stoppin' by, dougdaze! -Kp

  • Another very funny review. Thanks!

  • Thank YOU, Legends! -Kp

  • you actually review films well which most critics dont

  • Thanks, Tropy! One of my fave reviewers is Roger Ebert -- he's almost always very fair, in that he judges the films for what they're TRYING to be not what he WANTS them to be. I try to emulate that. There's another reviewer I like a lot too, but I don't know his name. He was just on Entourage i think tho'. And Lisa Schwarzbaum of EW is pretty good. -Kp

  • I hate the Daily Mail reviewer Chris Tookey who never has any good reasons for liking or not liking a film and almost every film he reviews gets 1 star.

  • I don't know his work, Tropical, but I'm sure he feels justified in his judgments. -Kp

  • Brilliant like always

  • Hadn't stopped by in a long time I know... Liked this one though! Haha, hope it all worked out with your mom ;-) Well done.

  • Thanks, living! Glad you came on by! -Kp

  • I appreciate movies that don't treat the audience like their stupid. Good review, tho some of those conversations with your moms are outta control. good job I'm definately gonna check this movie out. So is Eva Mendes more than just eye candy in this pic?

  • Yeah. Mendes' and Wahlberg's acting were, to me, far superior in this than in anything else I've seen them in. Matter of fact, I've never understood the attraction to Wahlberg's monotone, emotionless acting in all his flicks. -Kp

  • I dunno, must be that angry brow that gets the roles.
