If we eliminate regulations for oil companies here in the U.S., prices will go down at the pump. Allow companies to dump toxic oil waste into open pits (or) shoot it into the water table and the cost of disposal will be dramatically reduced.
LOL, now 2011, and gas prices here now are $3.69!! sorry it was just funny to me when they were talking "gas prices creeping up to an all time high of $2.??"
well well well look what your obama is doing now gas is up our boys ang girls are still over in iraq o lets dont forget no new taxes well there here face it people they are all the same
Oil prices are controlled by wall-street and the companies/countries that produce it. You do know that oil is a traded good? Like all traded good prices fall or climb based on demand (real or fabricated) and emotional state of investors.
The freaks are coming out showing their True colors...
Republicans should be ashamed of themselves, with the Hate and whining get with the facts. America is the greatest country on earth and we must stop living in fear and misinformation.
Your not Americans if you vote for this kind race bating right wing CRAP.
Why in the world would "big oil" cut their own throats by promoting alternatives? That's like asking YouTube video producers to help Hollywood create a spinoff website that would not allow you to post. Duh!
I guess the real question is why is big oil SO afraid to make the change to alternative fuels that they give millions to campaigns of politicians who will NOT apply this pressure? Also, why are they paying their CEO's 5 times as much as their entire budget for renewable energy? Why do they spend more to advertise their commitment to clean energy than they do to develop it?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why would an oil company be required to pay for alternative sources? That's not their job. They don't sell oil so they can pay for the industry that will destroy them. Do I buy a Toyota then expect Toyota to give that money to Ford, a company they are competing with? Does Best Buy give money to K-Mart when I buy a TV from them?
A better analogy would be the government applying pressure on the auto industry to develop clean energy vehicles or at least an affordable hybrid. That's simply product development. If oil companies were pressured to research and develop alternative energy in the same way they would actually be more competitive in a country and world that will inevitably survive solely on fuels that are NOT oil. It would seem wise for all of these companies to "change their game-plan".
I bought a Honda Hybrid less than 2 years ago for $22k. Great decision. My fuel consumption for my daily commute has gone down by half. I fill up no more than once a week compared to twice+ per week on the old car. Efficiency should be the USA's top priority. The technology is here. Mandate it, and it will be affordable. Of course, Oil companies backing the likes of McCain don't want us to reduce fuel usage.
I'll give you an example, ShawnD1: Tobacco companies have been required to air messages which tell people not to smoke. A hydrocarbon-based economy is inherently dirty, dangerous, and (at the rate it's being used) non-sustainable. They have been raking in record profits; it's time for THEM to pay.
Stick to facts.McCains platform gives tax breaks to the wealthy and big business. Obamas gives tax breaks to the middle and lower class.95% of Americans will benefit more from Obamas platform than McCains.Thats FACT!The GOP is trying to make this a question of persons instead of issues.Lets stick to the issues, the economy, health care, job loss. The Repub platform does not address those issues so instead they mud sling and get people distracted.Vote on the platform that will benefit you most.
Our economy is in the trash and a thousand soldiers try to commit suicide every month in US military facilities around the world (according to the DOD). This is why Palin and McCain would like to distract you with lies about Obama.
Be informed - Rick Davis - Mc Cain's Campaign manager has been paid $2 1/2 million dollars by Freddie Mac - check it out on fact cheeck - Mc Cain has more ties to Big Oil than you know - do your homework!
Coal plants disperse much more radioactivity directly into the air than a nuclear power plant ever could. Nuclear power emits absolutely no "greenhouse gasses."
Electric cars? Try arsine gas every time you recharge the batteries.
If diesel is so much cleaner, why not apply the exact same emission standards as a regular gasoline engine?
ANSWER: Diesel is NOT cleaner and the ecofascist religion is bullshit.
Uh...why would a government force a company to change their product...are you all F'ing retarded? Problem is Democrats make their money through the media, movies, inheritance, etc. and not through business...thus they dont understand the free-market, capitalism, our democracy, etc.. MORONS!
...and if you think the USA has a "free" market, that a capitalistic system is inherently good, and that our country is a true democracy, then you need some schoolin' son. Democrats WORK in all sectors of the economy. To say that Democrats only make their money thru 'media, movies, inheritance (and what, by the way, is "etc?") is an extremely ignorant, naive comment.
49 Oil & Gas units have been destroyed completely in the sea storm at Gulf of Mexico causing a daily loss of 13000 barrels of oil & 84 million cusecs of natural gas. But regarding the supply & demand in USA this number doesnt even co-op with 0.1% of the daily consumption they say that the residential consumers will not be affected. But being a very critical issue as concerns the economy sooner or later it will certainly have an impact on devaluation of US $ leading to a collapse in economy.
Another wasted opportunity. "I would not require them to..." with emphasis on "require." People will argue you cut a sound byte out of context. And I can certainly see their point, as obviously, that was not his complete answer. I am on your side, but you've got to put forth a better video than this to make your point.
"Russia plans to build the world's longest tunnel, a transport and pipeline link under the Bering Strait to Alaska, as part of a $65 billion project to supply the U.S. with oil, natural gas and electricity from Siberia."
Somebody needs to investigate "Big Razor Blade!" My goodness, have you seen how much those Fusion blades cost! And I bet the CEO of Gillette is laughing all the way to the bank. We need him and the CEO of Schick to come before Congress immediately!
One heart beat away! Who was born in 1884 and died of a heart attack in 1945 at age 61 ? Who was born in 1911 and died in 1981 of a heart attack when he was 70 years old? John S. McCain
This is all a big misunderstanding!!First ok the oil companys gave Mccain 1,069,854 dollars.Come on man the oil company giveing someone a million dollar's is like when you give a dollar to a bum no big deal lmao. And what so he has 15 people working for him who where part of the machine thats been sticking it to us since the first automobile needed a fill up,That doesnt mean THAT he's big oils bitch.Theres not enough evidence to support those claims at "ALL"(scare quote)rofl.
The spoiled son of military privilege got a free ride throughout his military career despite repeated instances of sex scandals and screw-ups.McCain would continue Bush economic policies that do NOT work
In addition to paying lobbyists, it is clear from today's Wall Street Journal (9/11) that the Republicans have been getting a lot more lubing from the oil companies. The interior department officials in charge of the repayment in kind program, where the US gets oil as lease payment for the offshore leases, have been sleeping (literally) with oil industry employees, which may explain the blonde in the video and, perhaps, a GOP beauty queen with 5 kids.
The thing that really kills me is how McCain goes ON and ON and ON about how he will "get the lobbyists out of Government" but it's becoming increasingly obvious that he's never met anyone who WASN'T a lobbyist...
What kind of Straight FUCKING Talk is THAT???
He's not a Hero... he's a selfish, lying Fascist!
The technology for electric cars has been here for at least 7 years. Watch the video "who killed the electric car". George DUBYA Bush is a real piece of shit. So is Dickface Cheaney and the rest of the republicans.
On June 10th 2008, John Mcsame was against drilling of shore,, June 16th after recieving a whoping 2.2 million from big oil he flip floped, now he has picked the sweetheart of big oil, sharah palin. The choice is clear this year, more of the same, big tax cuts for the super rich, oil co. and so on, or Barack Obama who takes no money from lobbyist and owes his campain to the people, he will bring about real sweeping changes we need so bad. Obama Biden 08
I am the biggest Obama supporter there is, but twice you didn't let us hear McCain finish his sentence. "I wouldn't require them to..." has left me very unclear what he was trying to express. Let him be heard.
All these conservative vermin that go on about paying more tax need to look at the fiscal irresponsibility of THE WORST governemnt in human history i.e. the misgovernment by Cheney and his cronies and the Bush puppet.
Look at the trikllion wasted in Iraq that could have funded education (which would create more Democrats, hence the underfunding), more hospitals, universal healthcare etc.
Barack's going to have his work cut out for him to repair the damage of the last 8 years.
No research is needed for alternative and zero-point energy. All the energy we shall ever want or need can come from devices and systems already invented, and suppressed, like COLD FUSION, and Professor John Searl's SEG, which is due to be unveiled in Thailand in December, 2008. If you own any utility stocks, DUMP THEM. Take the money and run. Vacuum energy inventions that were once suppressed are coming online.
Despite McCain's refusal to vote for renewable energy, he ran TV ads during the Olympics, showing a wind farm full of spinning turbines, the exact same energy he WOULD NOT vote in support of EIGHT TIMES over the past year.
McCain presumes Americans are SO stupid that if he just shows them wind turbines in an Olympics ad they'll actually think he showed up and voted for such renewable power — when he didn't.
Refusing to vote on legislation needed to address our energy crisis not only harms our national security interest by extending the duration of US dependency on foreign countries. But, it also risks marginalizing the US in terms of which countries will be the leaders in the alternative energies that replace oil dependency. After 26 years of conservatives, like McCain, repeatedly blocking wind budgets and tax credits, the US is now a bit player in the $36 billion global market.
We need to STOP using fossil CARBON-emmitting fuels all together, and go all electric-cars, like TESLA and ZAP-Lotus, MASS PRODUCED, and Hydrogen-cars,and all wind, solar, and sero-point, and magnetic motor-generators. What's the matter? Too civilised? Too advanced?
I'm not against drilling. I'm against those who point to the high price of gas and say that drilling will lower the cost. We need petroleum for a variety of applications... Using nearly all of it to create gasoline to fuel our vehicles without actively pursuing an alternative that already exists is idiocy. We need to use wisely what little domestic petroleum we have left. Our country once led the world in technology and ingenuity. Why do we remain shackled to the internal combustion engine?
Ehh... I like McCain as a person, but dislike some of the things he's planning to do, and I dislike Obama as a person but like some of the things he's planning to do...
WHEN will we get a president who fights for the PEOPLE ?
Corporate Oil DO NOT represent the people! Their profit is NOT in our interests! In fact it is directly connected to our MISERY!
I'm SICK of living in a nation where the richest 10% own a staggering 90% of the wealth! The most ridiculous level of rich-poor divide in the developed world.
No more corporate whores in the White House! No more legislation for sale to the highest bidder!
Show me where in the constitution is states that publically elected officials can dictate what a privately held company does with its profits?
Oil is a commodity, supply and demand economics apply. If you don't like the price of oil, don't buy it. From the looks of things now, less demand has indeed caused the price to drop. Government didn't have to do anything to solve it.
Have you already relinquished your rights to private ownership? The gov't has the power to tax & spend. What we do with whats left after the taxman gets his cut is our business...no one has the defined right to dictate how private owners allocate private property. (except in cases of eminent domain, which is another issue in itself) Why don't you just let uncle sam spend YOUR money for alt energy research. If you're a consumer of oil, you are part of the problem too! Right..?
The government is not dictating what they do with their profits, it is creating a situation of diminishing returns. The more they profit, the more they pay AND the more they make. More money still goes in the pockets of the executives for higher profits, it just isn't as much.
The big oil companies essentially create an oligopoly in the energy industry-thus there needs to be some sort of regulation to mitigate predatory behavior.
The natural solution would be to heavily regulate the industry the way we do with power companies, or create a situation that encourages new businesses to enter the market. The first one isn't good because it essentially turns the oil company into a govt. entity and the second isn't good either because we don't want American innovation going to better oil companies, we want it to go towards alternative energy. As a consumer of oil, I am part of the problem and I am for a gas tax.
Not only will MAC win this elections it wont be as close as you might think. MAC and Obama are in a virtual tie but independents are starting to break for MAC bigtime. Obama went from leading independents by 3% to trailing by 15%. Obama is now losing in Ohio by a nice margin and remember this election will only come down to a few key states and OHIO is nice prize for MAC. Obama is really starting to be defined and people dont like what they see. Obama is a media generated fraud.
obama is being defined by the right. People are being flooded with misinformation, smears, and outright lies about him. And because of this, yes, people are starting to believe it and turn to mccain. But once they start following mccain they are going to realize the game he is playing, and see who he REALLY is. Which is another war-mongering neo-con with ties to big oil, and plans to start another pre-emptive war, this time with much less of a reason than the none at all we had for Iraq.
Obama is dropping like a rock in the polls, MAC actually took the lead in a few. Ohio is now in MAC's column. This election will come down to a few key swing states and MAC is looking really good right now.
So if you made a sandwich shop, and the GOVERNMENT made you SPEND PROFITS on making hamburgers, you'd be okay with that?
ROFL. McCain got 1.3mil from oil, Obama got 400k.
BOTH took lobbyist money.
Also, Drilling is NOT his ONLY solution.
If these people actually went on his website and read his energy plan,... if they did then these guys are liars. IF they didn't, they need a major fact check.
oh its not? kinda like how obamas entire energy plan is making sure your tires are inflated? sorry, the attacks go both ways. You can't think attacks are ok when your good old boy, running his "clean, mature" campaign on the "issues" is attacking left and right, while his surrogates are spreading lies and misinformation about Obama. While Obama sits back and quietly proves them all wrong, and slams john mccain on the ISSUES, you know, those things that the election is SUPPOSED to be about.
Stan Meyers was murdered ...Stan Meyers was mmmmmurdered...stanmeyers was murdered...stanmeyers was murdered...stan meyers was murdered...stan meyers was murdered...stan meyers was murdered...stan meyers was murdered...stan meyerswas murdered...stan meyers was murdered..................
Drilling won't help a bit. Stop listening to their lies. The oil will only benefit the oil companies who sell their oils to the highest bidder in the world market. Only switching drastically over to alternative energy can help lower oil demand. Go check out Obama's energy plan on his website to know the truth. Save out planet! Go Vegan! Be Green!
I'm not listening to anyone; I understand basic economics and how the world works.
The increase in oil will drive down the price of oil because the speculators will drive the price down for the same reason why they are presently driving it up.
We would also be able to get off foreign oil, by drilling for our own and converting coal to oil.
If we got off oil, 50% of the world's population would die in a week. Where do you think we get all our food, synthetic material, plastics, etc?
Are you aware that these oil companys that will be drilling for oil in the USA are NOT USA based companies. It goes into the same oil stock, and is sold to the highest paying buyer. YOU WILL SEE NO LOWER RATES FOR USA CITIZENS AT THE PUMP... They will speculate it to drive the price up! Then you will pay top dollar since they had to spend money to explore those oil fields, drill, pump, and refine. Grow up - Oil companys are out to make the highest profit they can.
Will you look at what you wrote. Oil is a world commodity. Any increase in oil anywhere in the world lowers the price, and it doesn't matter when we get it because the price will drop.
Speculators will drive the price down if they know we are drilling.
I hope oil companies make more profit than they do now. Most American pensions invest in oil.
You're an intellectual lightweight who has no understanding of basic economic nor how the world works.
No, this is false information. Your economic knowledge means nothing when the oil market is dictated by a cartel known as OPEC. Whenever someone increases production, OPEC reduces theirs to compensate for supply and demand, and keep prices high. The oil market is GLOBAl, meaning it is all pooled together, and then priced. The more we drill, the more we will ship overseas, and the more gas prices will continue to go up. And believe it or not, we get a tiny fraction of our oil from the middle east
I'm so sick of my tax dollars being wasted to pay for your education.
If we get our own oil, and no longer need to buy from the Middle East, we can make OPEC useless. If OPEC cuts production, and we are self-sufficient, America makes the billions and our economy improves.
And yes, I know Canada and then Mexico are our two largest importers.
So we have to wait until Nancy Pelosi and all her minions come up with alternative environmentally friendly energy solutions? That could take a fucking century kind sir. I'm all for alternative energy. Who isn't? But in the mean time we have to be realistic. We have the oil within our own borders. Everyone's sick of dealing with Opec and that entire region in general, it's common sense! Drill now! ugh, Liberalism is a mental disorder.
We? Who's we? Are you confused again? The oil companies gets the oil, we Americans don't get it. I can tell your ass gets tricked and fooled by your party all the time. First, you trusted your boyfriend Bush then he screwed you over, still haven't learn your lesson. Your party is only good at lying and attacking. A party that came from hell.
You're not a libertarian, you're a little bitch that needs to get slapped around. I can criticize at whatever I want so stop whinning and crying little girl
McCain is a pathetic dishonest manipulative man with "substance". Nothing can surprise me about him anymore. He wants more nuclear energy! Irresponsible demagogues like McCain caused one of the worst nuclear disasters of the 20th century -- Chernobyl, Ukraine. Thousands of people had died already and many continue to die every day. It may be our future if McCain will be elected President.
If John McCain or anyone posting here thinks they are smarter than Nikola Tesla keep up your foolish pro-fuel rants. If not, stop championing an energy source that has enslaved our foreign policy and hindered our ability to compete in the future.
"If we use fuel to get our power, we are living on our capital and exhausting it rapidly. This method is barbarous and wantonly wasteful and will have to be stopped in the interest of coming generations." --Nikola Tesla.
LOL...now Mr.Flip-Flop Obama is for drilling off the coast of Florida. HHHHaaahahahahahaha......this guy cares about one thing and one things only-Getting elected.
you're a troll, and a poor one at that. So because Obama misspoke and said 57. that means he doesn't know one of the basic facts we learn in elementary school? give me a break man, you know that's a non-argument.
And Obama NEVER EVER said he was not for drilling at all, he said it was not the only answer. He doesn't support it by itself, but rather as a part of a more disparate energy policy.
and I agree. It's obvious you hate obama, but you fail to make any valid points.
LOL....you orons keep complaining that drilling wont do anything for 10 years. It's all about speculation. The moment they allow it prices will go down because it relieves the fear of wallstreet speculators. What's Obama's plan? Oh yeah, "Shut up whitie and ride a bike of put air in your tires. LOL......what an idiot. No wonder he keeps dropping in the polls. We need to work on all forms on energy not some magic new form of supper green fuel. When is that going to be developed?
so the fact that speculators are the main cause of high gas prices, needs to be fixed by more drilling and more oil, so they can make even MORE money?
that makes no sense. They need to be stripped of their apparent power. that seems all too obvious. It's not that drilling is not necessary-I wish it weren't, but it is.
It is NOT, however, the ANSWER to our current and future energy problems. your obama "wuote" is ridiculous, and does not outline his policy in the least.
I'm not sure if you are aware, but there are also larger scale solar power plants, and small wind turbines. A small wind turbine usually produces more than a solar panel array of twice it's cost, and looks no more distasteful than a satellite dish or rooftop antenna.
Also, a new oil platform wouldn't fill up your gas tank for 10-20 years, and even then all our available drilling locations won't be enough if we don't reduce oil consumption.
Yes you are correct, mandates are bad methodology for anything that isn't essential, and cannot be implimented otherwise (minimum wage, worker safety, etc. are necessary items)
However, government can use subsidies and taxes to reward companies that improve, and make the dirty few who refuse to keep pace fit the bill.
By making it expensive to stay behind in ecological soundness you can utilize market forces to bring change, instead of mandating it.
BTW, nearly a hundred years ago, the oil industry was the beneficiary of a windfall tax placed upon coal to cut down on pollutants and to encourage economic development by increased car use. NOW, the oil industry is what coal once was, an antiquated fuel source that does more harm than good. YET, these same oil execs cry foul when anyone even mentions the possibility of a windfall taz upon them. BIG OIL did not EARN it's supremacy of the market. Govt intrusion in the market made it happen.
mccain is stupid piece of shit! all you retards are victims of energy hustling! they don't give a fuck! it's all death to resources and all middle class.
McCain received contributions from American oil companies. So what? Exxon is a successful company that employees thousands of Americans. On the other hand, Obama received $29,521.54 from Palestinian brothers inside the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. From whom would you rather your President receive donations? American oil companies, or foreign terrorists? Man, if you can't make that distinction, then our country really is in trouble.
dejeanco, first you have NO PROOF that these Palestinians are terrorists. You assume, like McCain who can't tell the difference btwn Sunni and Shia, that ALL MUSLIMS are terrorists. And, as far as funding terrorist organization, the influence of BIG OIL is one of the primary reasons that terrorism gets the kind of economic support it has. From Wahabi-ists extremists to Bin Laden's fortune the trickle down of oil profits and fight for control spurs on militant movements. Make a REAL distinction.
Or like Obama who thinks the USA has 57 states, or that the Joint Chiefs of Staff are in charge of Iraq, or his new civilian security force that "will be just as powerful and just as well funded as the military."
dejeanco: The way you interchangeably use Palestinians, brothers, Hamas, Gaza Strip, and terrorists shows you know nothing about what you are talking about. Leave the foreign policy to the experts, your armchair interest in it is only producing paranoia and misinformation.
The Bush/McCain budget deficit has now reached $500 billion, not including the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which adds another $200 billion. That is $13.5 billion each week that Bush/McCain is spending that we do not have. That is more than the capitalization of Southwest Airlines, or Ford, or Pepsi Bottling, or CBS, or Starbucks.
Each week Bush/McCain has to borrow a Fortune 500 company from the Chinese. Next week, Harley Davidson, the week after, Macy's, then Best Buy.
McCain Vs Obama Inbred Vs Mixed Breed Low IQ Speech Vs Fonzie Shakespeare Bludgeon & Bomb Vs Diplomatic Efforts Backwards Evolution Vs Renewable Revolution Corporate Puppet Vs Democratic Nation War 4 Profit Vs Peace 4 Progress Every Man for Himself Vs A More Perfect Union More Of The Same Vs Now For Somethin Different Fear Vs Hope McCain Vs Obama Bush Snr = Broken Economy! I live on a ranch in south texas that Exxon leases. Exxon (previously called Humble) has leased this land since 1935 and has huge "proven reserves" -- yet they have just left the oil spilling on the ground and the whole thing decay. Many of the largest gas fields in texas are controlled by the majors with large old leases. Often, no plans exist to produce the oil and gas as they are booked as assets. Look at my videos to see the decay of the infrastructure.
its called supply and demand, we import 70% of our oil because you stupid liberals are fighting against drilling here in America and expect cheap gas at the pump. You want to know why I like High prices? because, people who buy these big SUV gas gulpers are suffering. Oil is in high demand these days now that China is needing it more than ever, this also affects the price of oil.
the president doesn't have to REQUIRE anything, Idiot. Big Oil, as you would put it. IS CURRENTLY OUR ONLY HOPE! Give them time, its big oil who is going to invest in these wind Farms anyway push.pickenplan (dot) com. Boone Pickens a big oil man is doing this now. Join the team.
Chris: You psychotic or something? Making up positions and quotes that I didn't say? Gas prices have almost tripled in 6 years because there are less and less oil refineries in the US. The corporate give away policies of the Bush administration have exacerbated this "let's see what we can get away with" mentality oil companies have. It's not a conspiracy, they openly admit they are cutting refinery capacity to hike up the price.
Chris: Your supply and demand and China argument isn't correct. You talk as if China appeared out of thin air in the last 6 years or were pushing rickshaws up until the year 2000. The Deng reforms and the resulting rapid industrialization in China started since 1980 so they've BEEN using oil. And you should have more sympathy for people affected by gas prices. I agree with your SUV sentiment, but it's a generalization. It hurts local economies and small businesses more than anyone else.
Chris: Glad to hear you're reading textbooks. You still fail to see that China's demand has been increasing for some time at a linear rate, yet gas prices have been increasing at a hyperbolic rate. You should try going to China someday if you really want to learn about it and broaden your horizons. You'll be less likely to make generalizations about people assuming they drive SUVs or are even Democrats or calling strangers "idiot."
Chris: Are you asking do I think he will require "Big Oil" (I'm not a fan of the term either as many of my friends work in the energy industry) to build refineries? The government can't order private sector industries to do that unless we nationalize them. So, no. I do think it's bad to back a candidate too in bed with corporations as most politicians are. Such a candidate is less inclined to care about price gouging. Who do you like in the election?
Im not going to vote. I reserve the right to not vote. Since Ive been in school I haven't paid much attention to this election cycle. In my opinion 2 Democrats are running.
chris: I respect that. Too many people forget we have the right to abstain as well as vote for a choice offered to us. Abstention is equally valid and at times the best choice. I abstained for a long time in elections to maintain nonpartisanship. If people don't feel a great compulsion to vote, abstaining is probably the best choice.
I like Boone Pickens "wind farm" plan. According to Pickens wind energy should take 300 Billion of the 700 Billion dollar energy load. He could have been taking about hydro also, but I think he is more focused on wind energy. He said that the wind farm he plans on creating will reduce our dependence by 1/3rd, This will decrease demand and hopefully lower prices.
You can thank Phil Gramm Mcsames best bud for oil prices, he wrote the enron loophole. which opened the com, market up to everyone, it was prev only open to trucking co and airlines Also the oil industry can't refine any more oil than they are now because they have not built new refineries since the 70s, and Mcsame took 1.1 million from big oil in june.

If we eliminate regulations for oil companies here in the U.S., prices will go down at the pump. Allow companies to dump toxic oil waste into open pits (or) shoot it into the water table and the cost of disposal will be dramatically reduced.

He wants:
- More Drilling = more oil profit.
- War in Iraq & Iran = more oil profit.
- No specific green targets (only feel good waffle!) = more oil profit.
- Gas Tax Holiday = higher prices & more oil profit (it's been tried).
- No windfall tax on Big Oil to invest in raising car MPGs = more oil profit.
- Alaskan VP is married to the oil industry = more oil profit.

THIS is retarded beyond belief.
rufiebone 3 years ago 4
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Why would an oil company be required to pay for alternative sources? That's not their job. They don't sell oil so they can pay for the industry that will destroy them. Do I buy a Toyota then expect Toyota to give that money to Ford, a company they are competing with? Does Best Buy give money to K-Mart when I buy a TV from them?
This is retarded beyond belief.
ShawnD1 3 years ago
A better analogy would be the government applying pressure on the auto industry to develop clean energy vehicles or at least an affordable hybrid. That's simply product development. If oil companies were pressured to research and develop alternative energy in the same way they would actually be more competitive in a country and world that will inevitably survive solely on fuels that are NOT oil. It would seem wise for all of these companies to "change their game-plan".

Guess what Honda is coming out with a new hybrid thats going to cost only 19,000 dollars!
To bad our american auto dealers are bought off by big oil maybe we would be ahead in the auto industry as far as alternative energy.
susanBhappy 3 years ago
I bought a Honda Hybrid less than 2 years ago for $22k. Great decision. My fuel consumption for my daily commute has gone down by half. I fill up no more than once a week compared to twice+ per week on the old car. Efficiency should be the USA's top priority. The technology is here. Mandate it, and it will be affordable. Of course, Oil companies backing the likes of McCain don't want us to reduce fuel usage.
dingleberry73 3 years ago 2
I'll give you an example, ShawnD1: Tobacco companies have been required to air messages which tell people not to smoke. A hydrocarbon-based economy is inherently dirty, dangerous, and (at the rate it's being used) non-sustainable. They have been raking in record profits; it's time for THEM to pay.

Vacuum is PURE MASSLESS CHARGE. An inexhaustible energy source greater than our wildest dreams.
"There is NO energy-crisis, only a crisis of IGNORANCE" - R. Buckminster-Fuller
Beamshipcaptain 3 years ago
No research is needed for alternative and zero-point energy. All the energy we shall ever want or need can come from devices and systems already invented, and suppressed, like COLD FUSION, and Professor John Searl's SEG, which is due to be unveiled in Thailand in December, 2008. If you own any utility stocks, DUMP THEM. Take the money and run. Vacuum energy inventions that were once suppressed are coming online.
Beamshipcaptain 3 years ago
Despite McCain's refusal to vote for renewable energy, he ran TV ads during the Olympics, showing a wind farm full of spinning turbines, the exact same energy he WOULD NOT vote in support of EIGHT TIMES over the past year.
McCain presumes Americans are SO stupid that if he just shows them wind turbines in an Olympics ad they'll actually think he showed up and voted for such renewable power — when he didn't.
Teriyaki07 3 years ago 12
Refusing to vote on legislation needed to address our energy crisis not only harms our national security interest by extending the duration of US dependency on foreign countries. But, it also risks marginalizing the US in terms of which countries will be the leaders in the alternative energies that replace oil dependency. After 26 years of conservatives, like McCain, repeatedly blocking wind budgets and tax credits, the US is now a bit player in the $36 billion global market.

Show me where in the constitution is states that publically elected officials can dictate what a privately held company does with its profits?
Oil is a commodity, supply and demand economics apply. If you don't like the price of oil, don't buy it. From the looks of things now, less demand has indeed caused the price to drop. Government didn't have to do anything to solve it.
bobbymapp 3 years ago
Where does it say that they can't?
The constitution sets limits on what legislation can be passed. Where is there a violation?
TexanProgressive 3 years ago
Have you already relinquished your rights to private ownership? The gov't has the power to tax & spend. What we do with whats left after the taxman gets his cut is our business...no one has the defined right to dictate how private owners allocate private property. (except in cases of eminent domain, which is another issue in itself) Why don't you just let uncle sam spend YOUR money for alt energy research. If you're a consumer of oil, you are part of the problem too! Right..?
bobbymapp 3 years ago
The government is not dictating what they do with their profits, it is creating a situation of diminishing returns. The more they profit, the more they pay AND the more they make. More money still goes in the pockets of the executives for higher profits, it just isn't as much.
The big oil companies essentially create an oligopoly in the energy industry-thus there needs to be some sort of regulation to mitigate predatory behavior.
TexanProgressive 3 years ago
The natural solution would be to heavily regulate the industry the way we do with power companies, or create a situation that encourages new businesses to enter the market. The first one isn't good because it essentially turns the oil company into a govt. entity and the second isn't good either because we don't want American innovation going to better oil companies, we want it to go towards alternative energy. As a consumer of oil, I am part of the problem and I am for a gas tax.

Only switching drastically over to alternative energy can help lower oil demand. Go check out Obama's energy plan on his website to know the truth. Save out planet! Go Vegan! Be Green!
Peacegiver7 3 years ago
I'm not listening to anyone; I understand basic economics and how the world works.
The increase in oil will drive down the price of oil because the speculators will drive the price down for the same reason why they are presently driving it up.
We would also be able to get off foreign oil, by drilling for our own and converting coal to oil.
If we got off oil, 50% of the world's population would die in a week. Where do you think we get all our food, synthetic material, plastics, etc?
Advocate1234 3 years ago 2
Are you aware that these oil companys that will be drilling for oil in the USA are NOT USA based companies. It goes into the same oil stock, and is sold to the highest paying buyer. YOU WILL SEE NO LOWER RATES FOR USA CITIZENS AT THE PUMP... They will speculate it to drive the price up! Then you will pay top dollar since they had to spend money to explore those oil fields, drill, pump, and refine. Grow up - Oil companys are out to make the highest profit they can.
Remberasha 3 years ago
Will you look at what you wrote. Oil is a world commodity. Any increase in oil anywhere in the world lowers the price, and it doesn't matter when we get it because the price will drop.
Speculators will drive the price down if they know we are drilling.
I hope oil companies make more profit than they do now. Most American pensions invest in oil.
You're an intellectual lightweight who has no understanding of basic economic nor how the world works.
Advocate1234 3 years ago 2
No, this is false information. Your economic knowledge means nothing when the oil market is dictated by a cartel known as OPEC. Whenever someone increases production, OPEC reduces theirs to compensate for supply and demand, and keep prices high. The oil market is GLOBAl, meaning it is all pooled together, and then priced. The more we drill, the more we will ship overseas, and the more gas prices will continue to go up. And believe it or not, we get a tiny fraction of our oil from the middle east
Xtal0 3 years ago
I'm so sick of my tax dollars being wasted to pay for your education.
If we get our own oil, and no longer need to buy from the Middle East, we can make OPEC useless. If OPEC cuts production, and we are self-sufficient, America makes the billions and our economy improves.
And yes, I know Canada and then Mexico are our two largest importers.

LOL...now Mr.Flip-Flop Obama is for drilling off the coast of Florida. HHHHaaahahahahahaha......this guy cares about one thing and one things only-Getting elected.
pigloverAllah 3 years ago
you're a troll, and a poor one at that.
It's obvious you hate obama, but you fail to make any valid points.
foxfairandbalanced 3 years ago 5
LOL....you orons keep complaining that drilling wont do anything for 10 years. It's all about speculation. The moment they allow it prices will go down because it relieves the fear of wallstreet speculators. What's Obama's plan? Oh yeah, "Shut up whitie and ride a bike of put air in your tires. LOL......what an idiot. No wonder he keeps dropping in the polls. We need to work on all forms on energy not some magic new form of supper green fuel. When is that going to be developed?
pigloverAllah 3 years ago
so the fact that speculators are the main cause of high gas prices, needs to be fixed by more drilling and more oil, so they can make even MORE money?
that makes no sense. They need to be stripped of their apparent power. that seems all too obvious. It's not that drilling is not necessary-I wish it weren't, but it is.
It is NOT, however, the ANSWER to our current and future energy problems. your obama "wuote" is ridiculous, and does not outline his policy in the least.
troll.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but there are also larger scale solar power plants, and small wind turbines. A small wind turbine usually produces more than a solar panel array of twice it's cost, and looks no more distasteful than a satellite dish or rooftop antenna.
Also, a new oil platform wouldn't fill up your gas tank for 10-20 years, and even then all our available drilling locations won't be enough if we don't reduce oil consumption.
ruediix 3 years ago
Yes you are correct, mandates are bad methodology for anything that isn't essential, and cannot be implimented otherwise (minimum wage, worker safety, etc. are necessary items)
However, government can use subsidies and taxes to reward companies that improve, and make the dirty few who refuse to keep pace fit the bill.
By making it expensive to stay behind in ecological soundness you can utilize market forces to bring change, instead of mandating it.
ruediix 3 years ago
BTW, nearly a hundred years ago, the oil industry was the beneficiary of a windfall tax placed upon coal to cut down on pollutants and to encourage economic development by increased car use. NOW, the oil industry is what coal once was, an antiquated fuel source that does more harm than good. YET, these same oil execs cry foul when anyone even mentions the possibility of a windfall taz upon them. BIG OIL did not EARN it's supremacy of the market. Govt intrusion in the market made it happen.

Man, if you can't make that distinction, then our country really is in trouble.
dejeanco 3 years ago
dejeanco, first you have NO PROOF that these Palestinians are terrorists. Make a REAL distinction.
priorzola 3 years ago
Or like Obama who thinks the USA has 57 states, or that the Joint Chiefs of Staff are in charge of Iraq, or his new civilian security force that "will be just as powerful and just as well funded as the military."
pigloverAllah 3 years ago
dejeanco: The way you interchangeably use Palestinians, brothers, Hamas, Gaza Strip, and terrorists shows you know nothing about what you are talking about. Leave the foreign policy to the experts, your armchair interest in it is only producing paranoia and misinformation.

I'm hoping that once Barack is elected he'll move for alternative fuels & especially on Hemp.
Henry Ford envisioned all cars running on Hemp Oil & built the Model A's to do so.
Then for the next 30 yrs most of our cars ran on Hemp.
Now the production of HEMP is outlawed in the USA.
This must stop! Hemp needs no fertilizer, herbicides, or pesticides. IT IS MUCH CLEANER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND CAN BE CHEAPER THAN USING CORN.
WAKE UP AMERICA!

Oil is in high demand these days now that China is needing it more than ever, this also affects the price of oil.
chris7777777777777 3 years ago
the president doesn't have to REQUIRE anything, Idiot. Big Oil, as you would put it. IS CURRENTLY OUR ONLY HOPE! Give them time, its big oil who is going to invest in these wind Farms anyway push.pickenplan (dot) com. Boone Pickens a big oil man is doing this now. Join the team.
chris7777777777777 3 years ago
Chris: You psychotic or something? Making up positions and quotes that I didn't say? Gas prices have almost tripled in 6 years because there are less and less oil refineries in the US. The corporate give away policies of the Bush administration have exacerbated this "let's see what we can get away with" mentality oil companies have. It's not a conspiracy, they openly admit they are cutting refinery capacity to hike up the price.
TrojanLoyalist 3 years ago
who cares, thats business. You build a refinery.
chris7777777777777 3 years ago
Chris: Your supply and demand and China argument isn't correct. You talk as if China appeared out of thin air in the last 6 years or were pushing rickshaws up until the year 2000. The Deng reforms and the resulting rapid industrialization in China started since 1980 so they've BEEN using oil. And you should have more sympathy for people affected by gas prices. I agree with your SUV sentiment, but it's a generalization. It hurts local economies and small businesses more than anyone else.
TrojanLoyalist 3 years ago
Chinas demand is increasing, what are you talking about, I just read it, sorry I didn't read it at some democratic website, I read it in a textbook
chris7777777777777 3 years ago
Chris: Glad to hear you're reading textbooks. You still fail to see that China's demand has been increasing for some time at a linear rate, yet gas prices have been increasing at a hyperbolic rate. You should try going to China someday if you really want to learn about it and broaden your horizons. You'll be less likely to make generalizations about people assuming they drive SUVs or are even Democrats or calling strangers "idiot."

Im not voting for McCain, but do you honestly think Obamah will "require" Big Oil?
chris7777777777777 3 years ago
Chris: Are you asking do I think he will require "Big Oil" (I'm not a fan of the term either as many of my friends work in the energy industry) to build refineries? The government can't order private sector industries to do that unless we nationalize them. So, no. I do think it's bad to back a candidate too in bed with corporations as most politicians are. Such a candidate is less inclined to care about price gouging. Who do you like in the election?
TrojanLoyalist 3 years ago
Im not going to vote. I reserve the right to not vote. Since Ive been in school I haven't paid much attention to this election cycle. In my opinion 2 Democrats are running.
chris7777777777777 3 years ago
chris: I respect that.

He said that the wind farm he plans on creating will reduce our dependence by 1/3rd, This will decrease demand and hopefully lower prices.
chris7777777777777 3 years ago
You can thank Phil Gramm Mcsames best bud for oil prices, he wrote the enron loophole. which opened the com, market up to everyone, it was prev only open to trucking co and airlines Also the oil industry can't refine any more oil than they are now because they have not built new refineries since the 70s, and Mcsame took 1.1 million from big oil in june.
