I had a 81 Virago 750. Biggest piece of crap I ever had. It was embarrassing to start it in public because the starter was always grinding. I shimmed the starter but it did'nt last very long. I really hated that bike.
This sound I was looking for. My 1996 XV750 makes the same noise after I replaced the valve adj.screws (which were worn) and the oilchain. I got this ticking sounds since then. What did I do wrong ? Still looking and thinking for weeks now and put a video on youtube, any comment or help would be very welcome:

i had a brand new 920 virago and it had the starter problem almost right off ,i shimmed it and it worked ,i also had the shop try and fix it with a kit and it didnt do anything
Thanks for all the comments. The oil pump , cams and rockers were replaced ,now running very quiet. I posted another movie of what it should sound like. I tried adjusting the valves but after looking at rockers and cam they were very worn and would not adjust properly.
I have a 1986 yamaha virago 700 with hitachi carbs that's been clean and the gas tank to, it runs good on the highway but a stop sign or red light it run rich and shuts off i have ajusted it,but nothing change. can some help me please? i want to ride!! THANKS

I do not speak very good English, but as far as I understood that I have the same problem with the ignition.

bikebouwer is correct, your valve clearance is too large
duffman559 2 years ago
sounds like a bad valve clearance (to large). In could be even camshaft /rocker arm damage (mostly rear cilinder)

Its not a virago, its an XV750 or an XV700 SE, but not a Virago.

Terry,
It sounds like your rear cylinder isn't getting any oil. You may have your oil filter in backwards. The filter hole is supposed to be pointing OUT.
