im new to the series, the first episode i saw was the one before the mid-season finale, when the old guy was talking about shane killing otis, but i never knew that shane actuallly did it. i really need to watch the whole series, but i can't find it anywhere.
think about it though they wouldnt have made it to the car and otis is to kind hearted to leave shane behind so shane knew what had to be done and he shot him so he could save carl i dont blame him.. he made the right choice
Yes Otis' death was very sad, and yes hate Shane as much as you want. But his action saved the whole group. The zombies would've chased him and Otis all the way back, and everyone would be dead by now, had he not done the deed. I personally think he's one of my favourite characters on the show. He has the character depth of Sirius Snape. Everyone who'se read Harry Potter hated Snape until the last book. When his true motivations were revealed, he was the misunderstood, unsung hero.

@kwanlifu According to the show, the walkers will not attack the dead. Shane had to leave him alive to attract the walkers so he could get away. In a later episode Maggie explains to Glenn that she would break the chicken's legs before throwing them in with the walkers in the barn to feed.

With the walkers closing in, Shane gets desperate, as he knows that both of them will not make it, and since Otis refuses to leave him behind, he shoots Otis.

This show is excellent.... it has suprised me many times over with the charcater twists. Shane is an awsome character as are others but his character is really uniuqe.

Shane shot Otis in the leg (not in the head) to leave Otis as a moving live bait while he escapes. note: the walkers are easily lured by noise. a spur of the moment, it's in Shane's nature--dark as it may seem in a moral sense, but may not be in a practical sense--to adopt the "kill or be killed" concept. a puny flicker of conscience resides in Shane though as he didn't exactly/directly kill Otis. but his savagery dominates his humanity, a weakness that may one day be the cause of his demise.
