Glassblowing only shortens your life if you have bad ventilation. In the case of bad ventilation, byproducts from the torch flame (carbon monoxide) and byproducts from colored glass and fuming (different metals i.e. gold, silver etc....). If you breath that stuff in you'll go down really fast.

The marble is not only good looking and character adding to the piece, but it also helps keep the pipe from tipping over sound you have to set it down. This keeps it from breakage or spillage of contents. They also make a great handle ^.^
