hey nice video. it is hard to make a city in bryce and even harder to make one as complex as the one seen in the video. but one thing that you could say is if the city would be good to animate with. i plan on make a free running video using bryce and was looking on how to make a city. don't get me wrong it does look like a city but on as a picture and not as a animation. but keep up the videos they do help out the people who want to learn :D
Why Bryce? I have used it on and off over the years but always found it slow. especially the render engine! Was there some good point to Bryce I was missing? Seriously tuts on Blender would help more than tuts on Bryce. Both are awkward to learn but Blender has more to offer in the end. Great tut all the same nice little tip. Subscribed:) For your other tuts:P
@h4ppydriver i was tring to find a similiar mask on the web but no luck, then i felt sorry i had to decide tu build it my self.. until i saw your comment... fucking briliant idea :))) , i just made an exact image by printing it :)))
This is the tutorial that convinced me to buy Bryce. I'm going thru Robinwood's tuts now, trying to learn the ropes, but this tut will always have a special place in my heart - even the clicks :)
Ulead photoimpact does pretty much eveything photoshop does for a fraction of the price. Its up to version 12 now I think, but any version can do this sort of thing. Version 4 was given away for free on a magazine coverdisk a few ago, so a bit of hunting on the net should find you a free and legal version
@dogspwnu I think the fact that GIMP is free would allow most normal people to understand that although I said they are similar, Photoshop is a far superior product! For a free alternative, GIMP is about the best image manipulation software there is IMO.
@dayday8421 agreed, I have gimp on this computer I am using right now. because I do not want to buy another copy of photoshop for my old computer. I love gimp, but still photoshop is amazing, I have CS4. I love it.
I love this method so much so i have purchased the full version of Bryce..any tutorials on creating a RAW file for SIM terrains in Second Life? i know it must have a 256 x 256 heightmap in 16 bit gray scale...but all new to me i havent a clue! tutorials welcome or a point in the right direction
LOL - sorry. As I stated in earlier comments, it was the default in Camtasia. I didn't realize you could toggle it off until a few videos were already done.
No problem. I do another one using the same technique to do a forest full of trees. If I can locate the video I will post it as a response to this one.
I'm trying to create a vast cityscape but I'm running into a problem once I get several hundred millions of polygons and, obviously, Bryce becomes so slow it's barely usable. Do you have any tips on how to make some sort of mock objects for the background so the project isn't so difficult to work in?
Thank you very much. It really does some wonderful things. I have also achieved some cool results by doing the square "bump map" and then going over the squares with circles or ovals or octagons -- then make that layer a little shorter than the square layer and overlay them in Bryce. You get square buildings with round bottoms... maybe I will do another tutorial. :)
Well, Bryce isn't really designed for game-quality work -- although I haven't tried this technique in other applications. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
this is awesome thanks a lot i never would have figured that out on my own. watching some of your tutorials just opened up a hole new world of video making for me. thanks again.

you can rip this city by printing screen and cutting the area used as elevation map :)
or draw your own. the shapes indicates the elevation shape, the intensity of white the altitude. white is top high, black ground lvl.
yup, nice tuto :)

You can really use any graphics program (MS Paint, for example). Just set it to 512x512 and paint in your blocks.
