Wouldn't most of the actors who appeared in silent films have appeared on stage plays first? They would've had some acting saying lines there. what would be the big deal crossing over to sound. they werent deaf mutes or mime artists. only the foreigners maybe would have had feared it
@mp01juve That's just it, Hollywood was loaded with foreigners and actors/actresses from regions where they had very thick accents. (New York accents in particular since so many of the top actors in the business were based there.) There was a very real fear that the movie going public would reject anyone without a middle American accent. (Meaning none at all.) Nowadays they pay top dollar for voice coaches to teach actors how to DO accents, not eliminate their own.
