Look at the Mayans, or the Incas. They had civilizations very similar to China; starkly similar in fact. But why was Europe so much more advanced? Because of their LOCATION. They were in communication with MANY neighboring countries, thus granting the ability to learn and grow from several different communities. When the potato was introduced in Europe, it QUICKLY became a major staple in ALL of europe. A LOT of cultural development, AND ecomonic development depends on location - Environment.
