More like two (in fact, "In Dreams" is exactly two octaves). No singer can sing 12 octaves. The entire range of the human voice, lowest bass to highest soprano, is about 5 1/2, opera singers have 3 to 3 1/2, and most pop singers do fine with about 1 1/2. The range of "The Star-Spangled Banner" is well under two octaves.

No putdown; Orbison had a great range for a pop singer. But a claim of "12 octaves" (or even five) is like saying someone runs 50 miles an hour. It's that silly.

Nonsense. Neither had anything like four octaves. Orbison had about two octaves, and Freddie had less than that. (He was actually a pretty terrible singer, technically.) Being a successful pop singer is a great accomplishment; there is no need to embellish it with patently absurd claims.

People know so little about singing that they think "He has four octaves!" is some kind of huge compliment. But all it means is that (sorry) you don't know what you're talking about.
