If a whole group of people occupied a fragile area indefinately elsewhere there would be an uproar. So this groups alternative to mining is lets mess it up by living in it. I can understand the sentiment but occupying is hypocritical.
As a side, all those protestors live in homes on land which was once pristine. Again hypocritical is a minor way.
