  • The yellow nub on the corner of one of my cleats just broke off after not even 10 miles. De fuck Shimano?

  • thanks. I just got my first pair of spd shoes this xmas and had literally no idea how to use them. Now I do!

  • thanks for explaining this ...

  • When the Shimano cleats are in good working condition they are indestructible from my experience. I was once in a very serious accident where one of my was ripped straight out of the pedal (improper way to exit the pedal) my cleat and pedals were just fine but the soul of my Pearl Izumis was ripped about half way off. This was a very serious accident and so for things to break was not a surprise but the pedals and cleats were fine. I think if they are free from any prior defects they are good.

  • Might change mine. I have both ....these and speedplays. I have top shimano shoes but... sometimes want to walk around after or during my ride. Was wondering if you get less leverage with the speedplays because they have less of a surface area on the pedals?

  • great video, thanks for the help

  • Good stuff!

  • man try not to stammer!! i have enough after one minute watching!!!

  • haha my spd-sl cleat broke yesterday. the rear of the cleat ripped off as i was falling down. had them for about 3 weeks

but i am getting another set. they're good value and i'm new to clipless. if the new ones break quickly, i'll probably buy another different cleat.

  • Speedplay pedals are much safer

  • The cleat did not break cleanly, it shattered and jammed as i tried to release. Having said that, it is an uncommon event. the main thing is to replace your cleats regularly.

  • I have been riding and building road bikes for about 30 years. The spd road cleats in my opinion can cause accidents if not checked after every rtide. The rear part of the cleat is very thin and liable to brake off in the pedal, thus making exiting very dangerous. I know, i have fallen because of this. The Look pedal cleats are much thicker, therefor safer if replaced as per instructions..

  • @sinagong

Thank you for your post - could you elaborate on Why this break is dangerous? I mean - is it because of the sudden release of the shoe? How often did this happen to you? How old were the cleats? In which situation did it happen, was it while going uphill?

I sure don't want this to happen to me...

    Thank you again,

    S

  • @simplyPlugIn What i was alluding to was that because the rear of the cleat is so thin, they wear quicker than the look cleats and have to be replaced more often. They are fairly expensive, so a lot of people might not replace them until they are in danger of breaking. My cleat broke in the pedal (locking the shoe to the pedal) as i was about to dismount. I fell sideways into the kerb, my helmet saving me from any head trauma. I know this is an unusual sinario, but any cleat breaking is not ok.

  • @sinagong if the cleat broke while locked it, you would be able to clip out. I don't see how you would be locked it when the back part that holds it in is broken off

  • Thank you - very helpful!

  • Thanks a lot man!

  • Helpful vid. Thanks!

  • Those r awesome! I'm getting a road bike soon. I was wondering how much the shoes and pedals cost u. Thank u for ur help!!!

  • Thank you very much for this video. This is so far, the most thorough and helpful video I've found on how cycling shoes work. Thanks again!!!

  • Thank you.
