Bill Maher as on everything else is correct. Drugs suck. The AMA sucks and so do the insurance and pharmaceutical companies. It is the food that makes us sick and the healthcare system that uses drugs to cover everything up.
I agree completely with what Bill Maher is saying about healthy and medication. For example, acid reflux is a curable condition that can be caused by many things; lying down after eating, overeating, too much stomach acid, too little stomach acid or food allergies. However, instead of figuring out WHAT is causing it we - with the help of our doctors who seem to not care about WHY its happening - begin a regime of acid blockerers, acid which ruins our health and stomach.
Raw organic food will regenerate your body so quickly, it will astound you! The key is in choosing alkaline foods over acidic foods. Stress is a big acidaker, anything cooked above 114 degrees become acidic. Body's pH should be at 7.5-8.
I would always wonder why everyone around me had 5 different allergies and 6 different disorders and 8 different medications. The worst I can think of is that I have to wear contact lenses and have sort of a slow metabolism.
"restless leg syndrome" is a manifestation of neuropathic pain that leads to tingling and twitching in the extremities. It's a real condition, regardless of comedians and graduates of the Wikipedia Medical School acting like it's a joke that big pharma made up.
But it can be treated with the same drugs that treat other forms of neuropathic pain, many of which have generics that people can actually afford, so a special pill is unnecessary - THAT is the joke made up by big pharma.
@ryuuseicha Bill is right on this and you're wrong. Big Pharma is a BIG FRAUD. People who live a more natural lifestyle and eat a more natural diet don't have problems like restless leg syndrome. Read the China Study. That's not Wikipedia conjecture, it's a book primarily based on the largest study of health as related to diet ever conducted. That study was sponsored by Cornell University, Oxford University and the Government of China — not anonymous Wikipedia 'contributors'.
Nice one rumblerider, you can even find Dr Colin T Campbell's lectures about the China Study on video.google, along with Gary Null, Dr Blaylock, Dr Kalokerinos ...
In certain ways AltMed already IS Big. I mean they have homeopathy in the UK paid for with people's taxes, endorsed by the royal family.
Homeopaths and H. producers are making big money all considered that their "drugs" don't have to pass the rigorous testing, trials results and peer-review of ordinary medicine, and cost almost nothing to produce large quantities of (shaking water).
But he does put down scientific/evidence-based/western medicine. Not so much here, aside from saying it "pushes whatever's wrong with you further back into you system so that down the road you get something really bad", but many other times.
Bill seems to think since science doesn't have all the answers, it knows nothing. The alt-med industry on the other hand is full of 'experts' claiming to know the one cause of all disease. And they're all willing to sell you the 'cure'. Hmm... Big AltMed?
Yeah well.. we people in Europe eat mostly what we cook ourselves.. no preservatives needed there.
I always hate it when Maher talks about "Western medicine".. Alright, sometimes doctors do treat the symptoms rather than the underlying illness. However - if a child runs a fever over 42-43°C you gotta get that down or the child will die.. so symptoms are sometimes the problem.
Also these statements put down the majority of "Western" practice like surgery, vaccination, etc. etc., which WORK.
Yes, the blanket criticism of "western medicine" has spread like wildfire as of late because people expect their doctors to be nutritionists who solve lifestyle issues: bad diet, lack of exercise. These things are the patient's responsibility. The beauty of western med is in surgery and solving genetic issues, etc as you mentioned. Not to say all docs are innocent, but western med is a gift.
I understand that Maher is not a complete "Western Medicine basher" (he has said so).. and that the situation in US is perhaps different from Europe. But his statements are really counterproductive when taken at face value (although funny).
I think my child with fever example is valid - many illnesses are indeed cured by removing symptoms. Not all though. Vaccination is teaching your immune system to protect against specific diseases.
"Maybe you wouldn't need a double bypass surgery if you ate better."
Yes, and maybe people wouldn't get stress-related illnesses if we didn't all live in towns and work so hard and had time to excercise. Pills wont save you but sadly western society has illnesses built in.
Surgery not only saves lives of people who live unhealthily, but also those whose working conditions, age, genetic disabilities or just bad luck lead to life-threatening illness.
Look I said the "illness" can be cured - which is a bit wrong, because a flu is cured by your immune system. But cooling down an overheating child CAN save the child's life. And there are other examples of Western medicine treating symptoms (saving the persons life till their body gets back on track itself).
Getting an infectious diesease is no one's FAULT. Getting the flu is no one's FAULT. And vaccines are the only way (bar quarrantine and luck) of stopping you getting it.
I enjoy convergent discussions, where people end up with very similar opinions, but want to say things a different way.
Preventative medicine is great as well, but it is interesting that you name vitamin C as part of your flu cure - that's the point, there is no reason for scaremongering against "big pharma" etc, they're the people who get you the cheap vit C, and western medicine tells you when to take it. To me the moral question is about the price (and excess) of drugs, not their effectivity
On food Bill you are not far from the truth there. I try to buy organic local foods from within my area. Its not always possible but we try. Prepared foods contain a lot of additives
salt and colorings which are not good. Basically eat a balanced diet and you should be fine.
Nah dude there's nothing in my inbox but the message you have posted on here. So go ahead and post it, but don't give me any bullshit non-credible source.
2/10 Bad troll. The only reason iodine is added to salt is because it's so hard to find. It can only be found in any substantial quantity in certain types of sea weed, which are understandably difficult to harvest. Also, are you aware that cutting salt out of your diet completely could kill you? Hell, eating nothing but Broccoli will kill you. The "poison" is in the dose.
Yep! He's right on the money here, with one exception: Our bodies are not adept at digesting most carbohydrates, even many that most people think are 'healthy'. But by far, the poison in the foods and how they are grown and processed is killing us 'far' quicker than fill-in-the-blank new virus of the year.
Well, as long as it does not get the same carbohydrate source every mean it seems the body is able to dispose of problem substances.
The problem here is the amount of starch and corn/weet (excuse my English) sugar (syrup) from the same source a large portion of the population ingests (in nearly every product as an additive).
Only in some people, GnosticAtheist. Most people cannot handle it, which is evident in mounds of research and the failure of low-fat, high-starch diets compared to higher fat, higher protein diets. Thanks.
Jon, carb digestion actually begins while you are chewing food, by salivary amylase. A problem with carb digestion is the type of carb. Any processed, synthetic, or natural sugar substitute will be difficult to digest because it was never meant to be digested in the first place. Carbs should make up 45-65% of your diet, as they are primary energy source for the body, but i would recommend about 40%. Organic fruit, grains, vegetables are great sources. I'd like to see your research. Thanks.
Chrio, I responded by accident while logged in under my brother-in-law's account, and now YT will not let me repost. But you should have it in your inbox. Thanks!
Your analogy would make sense if there was still some question as to whether or not cigarettes cause cancer but there isn't. You don't know preservatives are bad for you, you just think they are because companies market preservative free foods as being healthier. They do this the same way they advertise canola oil as being cholesterol free when canola oil doesn't have cholesterol in the first place. Studies have failed to show that natural preservatives are harmful. Prove me wrong or STFU.

Bill's got it figured out. He should write a book "Shit that is bad for you" or something. Whatever diet works for him, he should share.
Personally, I made a resolution this year to not eat fast food. So far, I've stuck to it but I know there is more I can do. I think it's more "don't" then "do" when it comes to the average American diet.
go to locally owned health food stores or farmers market. buy unprocessed organic whole foods. no added chemicals, pesiticides, etc. that's what he's getting at.

Right Bill; bad food causes infection by rhinoviruses and retroviruses; or weakens your immune system so you will get them. If you had lived in L.A. this past winter, you would have gotten sick three times in a row by all the megaviruses we had running around out here; no matter what natural foods you ate....
I grew up in america, I was alsways overweight when I lived in america. I live in Israel now and my physical health has improved dramatically, mental health is a different issue living in this crazy country, but overall I am much healthier not eating american food.
What were you eating when you lived in America? Were you on a diet of fast food that did it? Or were you eating even "regular" food, but somehow it has been tainted due to our processes here?
@shmuel33 I've lived outside of the U.S. as well. There is absolutely the same food in stores all around the world usually. It's not what food exists, it's what the people consider a good standard, for example- in the country I was in, people drank these small cokes, usually 1 a day, when they went to mcdonalds they'd have a double cheese burger and small or medium fries only, everything was just in smaller portions. The American standard is simply a BIG standard.
Very true. I'm originally from the U.S. I had the opportunity to live in London for 3 years and I felt so much better and I didn't look as bad as I do now because of the food I was consuming in Europe. I returned back from London to the states and I was astonished at how large the fruits and vegetables were. I put together something I would eat in London but it didn't taste nearly the same.
I think this is exactly what bill maher meant when he said even the things we think are healthy (fruits and veggies) are not necessarily because of how they're grown!
It was almost disgusting. I know why to. It's not hard to figure it out. GMO, preservatives, other toxins our bodies are trying to fight. I think an important thing to get in the habit of doing is sitting in a sauna for 10-12 min while the crap (toxins) is sweating out of the body.
so true...I am from Europe and most of Europeans when they come to US gain so much weight...and the food is so bad here, fruit and vegetables dont taste and smell at all!!!I think Americans should complain and ask for a better food from their government...considering how rich you guys are :)
