  • Using a 6-Core CPU in a HTPC is just overdosed and not very economic.

  • That CPU doesn't compare at all wtf are you talking about. Its not even as good as a 2600k and thats using the best cpu AMD has a FX8150.

  • Mind if I ask what you are using the SSD for, and what software you're using?

  • i have to agree with most people here, this is insane overkill for a htpc. 6 cores and water cooling? i built my htpc around an atom motherboard. now that is quiet, effecient, and still has the power to playback hd video and run a linux server vme same time. not to mention the whole build came in under $450

  • Rush 2112 (modified) quote at the end ;)

  • First thing I notice is, a lack of Video capture card. So I have a Media server that won't stream or record live content. Fail!

  • For that price, why not just get a Sony BDP-S5000ES?

That way you can have unmatched sound, picture quality, and reliability without having to use a piece of shit, aka Windows 7, with other pieces of shit, aka shitty proprietary drivers that need reinstalling every few days.

  • WHAT A LOAD OF BULLCRAP!

    THAT IS NOT A HTPC!!!

YOU BUILT A HUGE CHUNKY STANDARD PC!

NOW, PLEASE TRY AGAIN AND THIS TIME CRAM THAT PILE OF "#¤% INTO SOMETHING THAT WILL ACTUALLY FIT IN YOUR LIVING ROOM!

    FAIL

  • @IamRickyMartian oh yeah, an HTPC must me smaller than a lunchbox and barely able to play blueray video....

    go home kid.

  • Or you can just get a xtreamer ultra and skipp the fuzz and start watching a movie, though building is fun :)

  • Anything more than 2 cores is probably not going to be utilized by anything but games. Moreover, the L3 cache on the phenom is unnecessary and again only beneficial for games. Save your money for HDD, RAM or more tuners.

  • 6 cores for watching movies? 3 cores will do just fine heck 2 cores even work.

  • @KuriapXia what if you were wanting to record a TV show through a TV tuner at the same time? Or record a bluray/dvd disc? Or all 3 at once. Plus be downloading more media at the same time. I agree 3 or 4 cores would do just fine for watching movies. But 6 cores is also just so much cooler! haha

  • @davidworkman9 I do agree you have to use, every single drop of power in those cores of course.

  • Some component choices are hardly to understand: why a Seagate 7200.11 hard drive ? It´s anything but silent, a WD Green 1 or 1TB does a much better job! Why this huge, ugly expensive Lian Li case ? An Antec Fusion Remote looks almost like an AV receiver, is cheaper and has a VFD display and a RC bundled.

The AMD 1090T is also strange - a HTPC is meant to stream AV content and to watch DVDs/BRs, Youtube clips etc. A Core i3 2105 + AXP-140 and a Noctua Fan are sufficient and supersilent!

  • My htpc is about 12 times smaller than that and have passive cooling. :-P

I guess some ppl just like large cases..

  • still so totally fail for a HTPC...

  • amd fan boy

  • If I turn the volume up I can hear the fans! For low noise I'd have gone with a low power laptop grade CPU like Intel i3 2.5Ghx Dual Core 2100t at 32watts instead of AMD Phenom125watts! More watts = more heat = more fans. o.O

  • the chassis layout inside reminds me of a server "blade"

  • very nice work!!

  • the corsair h50 rad is not in the ideal place - all its doing is moving warm air thru it due to where the rad was placed - no colder outside air being pulled into the case at all

  • Enjoy 1024x768 resolution.

  • OVERKILL.... A freaking atom can be a budget HTPC. $300 bucks for a freaking GAMING CPU. Just go but a celeron.

  • dude you suck

  • I really like this build but what new components can i use now? This vid's from 2010 so there got to be better hardware now? Is it possible for a htpc to be performant enough to play 1080p vid with mpc fast but quiet?

  • rofl..... over kill much....

  • I have a Athlon 3500+ on a Asus A8N SLi with a Radeon HD 5450. My HTPC will outperform this one, since it does HD DTS and DD HD and that for only a fraction of the costs. The PC in the video has only one advantage: It will boot faster.

  • ye olde baker boy?

  • In fact core i7 980x is much faster than a phenom x6 1100t.

The 1100 is as fast as a sandy bridge i5..

  • @pennerblogger Probably not even although an i5 2500k with a slight overclock can beat a 980X at some things but for something that does use six cores, the 980X would perform for its price.

  • totally overkill 4 a HTPC.

    I am using

    Zotac ITX ION P (SU 2300 + GF9400)

    2GB RAM

    16GB Kingston SSD

    OrigenAE M10

and it boots up in les than 30 seconds as u can see in my Vid:

    youtube.com/watch?v=4Q94OljzPfc

  • of course with a S470 TV card ;)

  • A massively overpowered HTPC. I approve!

I'm saddened by the usage of onboard GFX, what it really needs is a 590 or 6990 for displaying those movies. :D

  • @attentionjuan ... Don't have to be a giant dick. You have absolutely no clue what he uses his htpc for. Your nothing but a chicken shit hater and will probably die cold and alone...This is a fantastic build for someone who is looking to eliminate the need for a front end + back end setup and the speed and performance of this htpc makes for a long lasting build that won't need much upgrade for the next 5 years or more... Great video man keep it up

  • piece of shit...

  • Very nice :)

  • I have a VERY powerful Gaming PC i also watch movies on it and it is loud so im thinking of building one of these it seems to be cheaper than what i payed for my motherboard alone

  • cool

  • Really nice pc! but isn't it a little bit of waste letting all that fine and expensive hardware just play movies?

  • What a waste!

  • Does anyone know what software he's using on the computer monitor behind him?

  • @betaomega04 windows

  • IS this your main server? What software do you run? Thanks for posting this video.

  • My HTPC is a 20m HDMI cable and wireless mouse+keyboard. Comp in the other room no noise problems. Full power of a desktop with none of the negatives.

  • Hi, what acoustic dampening material did you use? Where did you get it from?

    Thanks!

  • I use Crestron, but any HTPC remote will work.

  • Whats your solution for having a remote?

  • wow pretty mice pc but way overkill in my opinion people I know use atom processors or just something cheaper like an athlon II and they get by just fine.

  • Great video but I would have preferred to see it in six or more parts. I hate that fast forward crap

Question; Would it be possible to place a videocard in the system, or one like it, for gaming?

  • @ShastaHawk Yes, it has plenty of slots for all sorts of cards, even multiple cards.

  • Loved this v-log. Not that I could afford the build on my particular budget, but there are so few videos that are shot as well as this one. I've never built a computer before, so this was a great way to see it happen from beginning to end. Thank you for the post. Much appreciated!

  • @thecivilcommentator You are welcome.

  • I have a similar build. Decided on the Lian Li cube. I liked the design. I sometimes wish I had chosen the case that you have in this video. Still thinking about it. The hot swap I have is the Antec easySATA. I'm really disappointed with it. I may switch to what you're using here. Though my motherboard only supports IDE and AHCI. I have an ASUS P7 H55Pro-M, Intel i3 550 stock fan, (2) 2TB HDs, BluRay player/Burner. Idle temps are at 27C, but under load I spike to 62C. So I need a new CPU fan.

  • @ksgomez Forgot to mention the Corsair 430 W PSU and the Corsair 4GB of RAM. Overall my build is very quiet as well. With all the rebates and discounts, as well as the recycled BluRay and Hotsawp from my gaming PC. I'm guessing I spent less than ~500 bucks.

  • Thats the same motherboard that I have in my gaming rig lol. Why a 1090T? what program is going to use 6 threads in an HTPC?. Also an SSD? this whole rig is so over kill for HTPC use. You will probably have this thing for 10 years and it still won't get slowed down. It didn't look like that 120mm fan was hooked up because on my rig all the fans that are hooked up to the motherboard start up as soon as I turn the system on.

  • @workensmart It also has other duties, but the primary is HTPC.

  • @HighTechCEO hi buddy thanks for the vid clip, this vid has inspired me to build my own htpc for cinema use which i always wanted to do,ive just gone and bought a gigabyte ga890gx motherboard and the amd phenom x6 1100t blck edtion processor, can you tell me which is the best or midrange ddr3 ram to go for and how big should it be?i am new to all this plz excuse me,does the motherboard have a built in sound card and graphics card or do i need to intall them seperate, once again many thanks mate ;-)

  • @HighTechCEO still overkill buddy

  • @workensmart Totally agree. Overkilled with the admittedly great processor, RAM and case. Although I think its a little strange to get integrated graphics and then still leave room for an actual graphics card, couldn't you have gone for a smaller case. In addition the 400W PSU is going to limit any extras you might want to add.

  • @wmanns11 if he's converting files then he will just need a good CPU the graphics card will not be used in such an application. I do agree that a six core is overkill. I have a Phenom II X4 965 in my HTPC. When I convert video files it will only takes a couple of minutes but all four cores are maxed during that time. If I did it with a duel core then it would take much longer. Plus I can still multi task and stream video while I'm converting files.

  • @workensmart Jep, what a overkill for a HTPC :O

  • @workensmart Mine too. I have that in my gaming desktop. Works perfect!

  • lol have the same proc. in my pc

    it's awesome ;)

  • Great video, great components, good job! That PC is pretty powerful.

  • I like you style of presenting videos, hope you do many more.

  • thats my gaming rig but with a radeon 6870. i wonder what his main rig is like 0.o

  • what software are you using for multimedia? do you have a sperate server for streaming your content?

    thanks!

  • Thuban core x6 AMD chips do not compare favorably to Intel's flagship Gulftown core i7. Not even close. Thuban core X6 can match the performance of Intel's non-hyperthreaded four core i7 as far as I am aware.

  • I think it's overkill. But mann why not if you can afford it?

Good job and a nice system(not only as HTPC)

Hope you get a lot of fun with it.

    GRTS

  • why would you need 6 core cpu for htpc ?!?! it will work great on dual core..

  • nice but i dnt like the gigabyte/jmicron sata 2 external chipset or secondary have no great perfomance isnt bad, but exist better sata 2 controller.

  • Hmmm, thats a strange choice to mount the fans inside the housing. That will only circulate the air within the casing. Water cooling is only as cool as the temperature of the air passing through the radiator. Therefore you want outside air to pass through the rad and not internally hot air.

  • The AMD does not even compare to the intel i7 Extreme...

  • @ASAWProductions it compares to number of cores :D

  • Would a hd 5770/gtx 460 fit in it?

  • Hi Robert , thanks for sharing this. Is there a way to get a list of what you have used for this configuration - and I noted that you did not have a TV card installed. I have - maybe a silly question - is there a way to stream the cable through an HDTV system like this one. Thanks again....

  • @2bentobox The list is in the video, and its all there. And there are cable cards avail, although I don't use one.

  • why six core it s is to fast

  • @Giorgio4M You can never be too fast, IMHO.

  • @Giorgio4M Like they say, you can never be too rich or too fast.

  • I guess this is the worst composition of hardware I have seen so far for a HTPC.

Why do you install a passive PSU, when you install 12cm fans anyway? Guess what, there are PSU with 12cm fans as silent as the ones you installed, so it wouldn't be louder at all.

The CPU is totally overpowered, and your slogan that you can't be too fast, is totally not true. It's wasting a lot more energy than a HTPC has to. I had to laugh when I heard that you used low latency RAM, what should this be good for?

  • @johnpatcher

Agreed. this biuld is retarded. I built my HTPC with an Intel e5300 and Nvidia GT210 for probalby 10% the cost and it can run any media. Why build a gaming machine if you are only going to watch movies or listen to music? If you are going to fork out this much cash why get the Mac Mini, it small and compact and looks great sitting next your HD TV

    What a chump

  • @attentionjuan you dont gotta be a dick about it. he's obviously passionate about his build.don't you have anything more productive to say. he took the time to make a vid about his personal likings for a build and introduced a method for making your own htpc. you are socially inept.

  • @johnpatcher I agree. Way overkill! This is something you build using your old PC. So that it's not just gathering dust in a corner while becoming old.

  • @TheFutureLooksGrimm I also use this as my home server, so I wanted it to be very reliable.

  • @TheFutureLooksGrimm I also use this as my home server, so I wanted it to be very reliable.

  • Nice machine. Where is your remote control, which do you use?

  • @DraKarenHorney I control it with a Crestron control system via TCP-IP.

  • @HighTechCEO

Thanks, i will copy your system but with less CPU. Please, which Crestron model do you use?

  • @DraKarenHorney Glad you found it useful. I use a Crestron Pro-2 controller and several different remotes, ranging from the TPS-6000, the TPMC-8X, 4X, 4Xg, Xpanel, iPhones, and iPads.

  • I calculated $1429 as the total. I think it's an impressive machine for under $1500 ;-) but my budget is about half that amount.

  • whats the total on this build?..looking to build my own.

    not bad, is 400w enough?

    ..any cons on fanless PSU?

    thanks.

  • @kamikazeOS Fanless has not presented any issues. I have built 2 more of these for the office conference room, and they all run perfectly.

  • @kamikazeOS The fanless works perfect, and makes no sound at all. I have had no issues at all with the PC.

  • lol @ HD-DVD compatibility

  • @CoolHayward Yes, HD DVD indeed. Check the prices on HD DVD. I have bought hundreds of them for pennies on the dollar and ripped them to "My Movies". It does not care what the original format is.

  • This complete overkill for a HTPC.

  • Awesome build.

    What was the total cost?

Why did you go with a rack mount case? would all of that fit in a regular case (my space is limited)

What is the software your using for your dvd movies there?

Can we see a video of it booting up (I bet it's fast)?

  • @dvddecrypter It is mounted in a rack, and I use My Movies. It boots in about 30 seconds.

  • I'm the male pattern baldness he's trying to hide with the hat.

  • @fartamplifer You have me there, I am definitely lacking ion the hair dept.

  • Put up a part two. Walk us through your system.

  • Great video

  • don't put yourself down. i know for a fact that if you trained hard enough, and with a little luck, you'd be able to build a PC in 2 minutes.
