  • usually I don't like to comment on the dislikes... but WTF >_O who dislikes this ?

  • Exotic sound.

  • @poisenbery If he walked on the red carpet, people would have to like him as much as they like Britney or Rihanna. Even though, would he walk on red carpets, wouldn't he feel corrupted, started thinking differently and then lose this special touch he has with music? I don't know :(

  • what instrument is he exactly playing here?

  • @pumberdog That is an electric sitar.

  • This man has the power of happiness giving in his own fingers! thumbs up if you think he should be disgustingly rich

  • These Candyrat artist made me throw my guitars out of the window.

  • dean must be the love child of joni mitchell & jimi hendrix....

  • WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE 20 PEOPLE WHO DISLIKED THIS?!??!!

  • HOW IS CANDY RAT LESS KNOWN IN THE MUSIC WORLD THAN JUSTIN BIEBER!?!?!?

  • yo cool guitar

  • Alright I'll bite, why aren't the people at CandyRat more famous?

  • @Darkwaterdude Apparently fame and talent are inversely correlated.

  • @poisenbery

Mcdonalds and other fast food places are cheap, and very, very, very, palatable because of all of the saturated fats and whatnot. They just.. taste. good... at face value..

Then you have gourmet foods that are harder to get into, but they have much more complex tastes.. They aren't for everyone, though, so people like some kinds and not others. They really do taste better in the end, and have better ingredients, however, mass producing them is harder.

    same for music

  • he definitely got sympathetic strings..but i`m not sure if its a normal bridge with effect or a jawari bridge as on sitars. Chk Jeff Titus Chava`s Song for similar sounding guitar, but acoustic.

  • @ajaydotcom It's a 'buzz bridge,' based on the jawari bridge design to mimic the sound on these electric sitars. I can't quite make out the manufacturer on the headstock but the original ones were built by Danelectro under the name Coral in the sixties. Jerry Jones makes a high quality replica model now, and a company called Rogue makes a decent cheaper version of the same. I'm sure there are other companies doing it, too. They're really fun to dick around on, if you ever stumble across one.

  • @NJHellberg thanks for the info ...i will look into it...

  • this guy strum pattern is sooo unique

  • @hugenoodles Hell yes

  • What is this instrument ?!

  • @psychogroupie118 Its an electric Sitar

  • thats a sweet shirt

  • @fancracker33

I would love to own one of those shirts. Lets do some research. ^_^

  • sounds like a song playing backwards

  • does anyone know the key ? i noticed an F and a G of some sort and he plays a little in Am pent but I can't get the rest :/

  • He might be mixing the keys up, lots of people do that but it definately looks like key of C to me

  • Is it just me or does his pickup light up?

  • @logohi212

it'll just be a studio light reflecting

  • i think it's reflecting a light behind the camera.

but that is a cool idea for a guitar.

  • Sadly, It's just you. that would be pretty cool though!

  • i'm a bass player and i hav no idea how guitarist can even play w/ the strings so close together......................

  • I play both bass and guitar. I think of them as two completely different instruments. Because thats exactly what they are.

  • @logohi212 bass and guitar are not completely different. there's a lot of differences but also a great deal of similarities. if i were to say the saxophone and the bass were completely different, that would make sense. but the bass and the guitar are very similar in many aspects.

  • I know what you mean, that was kind of stupid of me to say it in that way.

  • @wizzard64598

I started with the bass and had to have a little bit of a transition phase when I moved into the guitar. I think a lot of it has to do with getting used to the fact that the strings are so close together. We get used to it, much how we get used to the bass being so seperated on some occasions.

  • Sounds like some sort of Open D tuning with the low D, tuned to back to standard E. Sounds awesome!

  • Nice Deano. Thye should call that thing a suitar.

  • Haha very nice music. I love the sitar.

  • Me: I like to use the G chord a lot.

    Dean: Watch this

  • @LoafofCat I like G strings.

  • @LoafofCat I love the G chord. but I broke my G string...

  • @LoafofCat after like a year I still don't get this comment.

  • @mycahman It's making fun of kids who sit around and play the same 3 chords lol instead of actually learning to make these amazing tones and textures with notes..

  • @Progressionification Oh yeah, I can't stand people who say they play guitar, but all they know is the basic chords in D Major.

  • one of my favorites

  • amusing instrument!!i want one

  • i see most mainstream artists doing mundane stuff in standard tuning

then i see people like dean doing completely original stuff with standard

why doesn't the mainstream industry have musical standards?? do they just sit around and say 'hey this band has minimal talent. lets sign them'

its a shame that people like dean aren't the ones walking the red carpet and getting awards

  • well said my man!

  • It would seem that they don't even higher artists, but merely performers.

  • True. But look at it this way: we can feel special.

In a good way I mean.

  • thats just it though, i dont think its about awards to any of the candyrat artists, and thats what makes the music so special, its played for no other reason than to just play it

  • hey theres nothing wrong with standard tuning :(

  • @poisenbery I justdont think that this sort of guitar music is meant for the big public. Dont get me wrong, i love every single note he plays, but I would understand that people dont like it when there is no singer, drum and bass. And most of the peoplethese days only listen to those hiphop and rapperguys.

  • @poisenbery The other point to remember is that when it comes to music or anything else for that matter you can "HIDE" in a group but when your playing like this it's and you talent..and thats it. It's like a race car..we all know that your ford Mondeo isn't as fast as a F1..but not everyone can have or be that talented F1 car so they settle in to the main stream of music just as they do with cars and houses etc

  • @poisenbery It isnt a shame at all. It enables a musician to avoid that star allure thing and be themselves and play great music for those enlightened and open minded enough to know and appreciate what is given by a real artist. It enables them to play for themselves, not adapt for the masses to remain competitive with top funded media franchises. It enables them to play for you and me =)

Thank them for remaining hidden only for awakened ears to hear :D

  • @poisenbery It's also a shame that people actually believe music should have a standard.

Look, we understand you're mad about him being as famous as he should be, but music is music...no matter what it seems to you...

  • @MusicDefinesAll I'm not sure if he's doing a play on words with the "standard" of tuning/music, and maybe it's confusing you, but you can't say that mainstream music is about talent (for the majority of artists anyways). It has more to do with hollywood and its pop-aganda of fashion, celebs, and fads then anything else. Add the idiot-box we call TV and it's about corporate dumming down of our minds; "arrested development", while we idolize figures of fake intellect and mediocre talent.

  • @ripripripus Can't say I don't agree.

  • @poisenbery if you think you've seen something in Standard, watch Maneli jamal's Cold Arrival..breathtaking

  • wow thats flavorful. ive seen those electric sitars before, but never actually heard one. thought he's get a little more use out of the drone strings though

  • sounds like a fretless bass

  • Hey if you guys like this sitar/guitar sound i would try songs like close to the edge by Yes, or I know what i like(in your wordrobe) by Genesis. They both use this same guitar.

  • unlike some people, i can respect the talent without liking the music. This isn't really my style, but i can tell that he is very good(miles better than me haha) so dont just knock somethin cause it's not your music

  • its a sitar people

  • Yes...this is an electric Sitar. They came out in the 70's. The Lemon Pipers used one on Green Tambourine. In fact several artists back then used them and then they just kind of faded away. This is the first one I've seen in many years.

  • El fruto del esfuerzo! Muy bueno me gusta!

  • Loving this gus music, it has a unique felling to it !

    2 thumbs up :D

    5/5

  • that's one kind of tuning

  • great song! i like this unique sound. and the 7/4. awesome!

  • yes 7/4 sooo rad

  • sick!

    sounds indian

  • its wierd ..... but so cool !

  • Is this song in 7/4 ?

  • In parts it is for sure, not positive that it is the whole way through.

  • Blue Ox! You know this guy? Would you ask him for me what planet he's from when you see him? One of a kind he definately is!

  • The word "dafinately" doesn't exist. make that "definitely".

But I agree with you, this guy can't be human. Must be some god or something...

  • i just think you read it wrong, he spells definately correctly...

  • no, its 100% definitely...lol

  • aye, check that dictionary....

  • Ugh I love this song so much.

  • It's a Sitar Guitar, not sure of the maker but I'll try and ask Dean next time I see him. It has additional resonating strings and a pickup for them. I think lots of the time Dean uses a pick, but I think he also deftly tucks it up into his fingers and uses his tips as well. At 3:23 on timeline you can clearly see a pick.

  • I used to think he was using a pick for the first half. Now I think he's not using a pick for any of it--it just looks like he is.

I really like this performance of the song. I also bought the version available on iTunes--and it's really good. But I still like this one better. I return often just to watch and listen to it. I think this is the same instrument that was used on the 60s song "Green Tambourine."

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, I feel the same way about Isabella. Good with the whole band, but the song can totally stand by its self when Dean plays it on guitar.

  • hes picking it... he just cross pick very well, thats why it looks wierd

  • Is he using a pick? Or just his thumb?

  • He is using his thumb.. not a pick you kinda get shown that clearly if you watch. =p

  • He's clearly pinching something. At least towards the beginning of the song. Perhaps its a thumbpick.

  • he's actually using a pic >_>

  • it sound great =)

  • thats not an effect he is playing an electric sitar

  • he's not using an effect, it has a buzzing bridge

  • This song reminds me of some kind of Buddhism. It sounds Buddhism in some way I think.

  • its his shirt lol

  • wouldn't that be hinduism...?

  • Oh Brahman thank you for creating this man so that he could create this music. :D

  • it has a Indian sound as in India....not a buddhism sound.....wow

  • do want talent+unique guitar

  • currently my favorite song, I love it to death. Dean Magraw is a genius.

  • Tuning: EADGBE STANDARD

  • This guy is technically good, but not someone I'd sit around and listen too----Again I'll say to Rpoland--Sign up Willie Porter!

  • isn't this an electric sitar?

  • Yes just looks a little diffrent!

  • i think he's using an effect to get it sounding like a sitar its a 6 string guitar on the bottom bit

  • called the coral sitar ;)

  • i that the guitar/sitar instrument. i've seen these on musicians friend . com

  • yah rougue makes them

  • Dude.. i want that guitar ^^ donno what it is but i want it =P

  • its called the Coral Sitar =)

  • What guitar is that?

  • Rogue.

  • Yo does anyone know the tuning for this song? LOOOOOOOVELY.

  • As far as I can see it a normal guitar tuning

EADGBE in the 'chorus" you can see him use normal chords like F

  • is that a jerry jones?

  • I am so glad that Rpoland is doing electric stuff now, or else stuff like this might not get out as much

  • I love how this sounds unaccompanied. I heard sound clips of the CD version from the Candyrat website, and it just doesn't seem as inspired with bass and drums. Maybe it's just because I can hear all the subtleties better without the drums and bass...

  • i think you're right it sounds way better like this

  • haha there's the blue light you see in one of mckee's vids.

    ha.

  • Far out, awesome.

  • Wow, how does he get that sound? Beautiful!

  • Wow rockyeagle92...A. You prolly don't even know how to play the guitar. B. You prolly don't know what kind that one even is. C. He closes his eyes because he feels the music soo much more and becaused he is skilled enough to have his eyes closed. Grow up and don't shed light on a composition, that which is superior to any you could ever make, or even comprehend. Jerk.

  • ok i dont know what kind of guitar that is, any1 wanna enlighten me?

  • Yeah myass225, he is playing what looks like a Jerry Jones sitar guitar. I got a cheap knock off by Rogue from my local guitar shop. Lots of fun.

  • It's an electric sitar.

  • dont tell him how to play the guitar

  • why would he need to open his eyes?

  • if I could play everything with my eyes closed I would, you feel the music so much more.

  • Pretty sure his eyes are open and looking at his fingering on the frets.

Just a guess - you don't play an instrument, do you?

  • yes i do play an instrument I play the bass since 5 years but I would like to correct the comment I put earlier I wasn't criticising his music I do like it very much but was just pointing out a ditail and had a few poeple responding who hadn't understand what i meant

  • @fbargus actually i do play the bass but when i wrote that comment i was young and ignorant

  • :34-:36 sounds like mother from Danizg.

    Great vid.

  • That's a real interesting style you got there. I love the way you play that sitarguitar, it's so different than how I play it. Very inspiring. thank you.

  • looks like the sly guy off prison break

  • oh my god!!!Tea Bag...your right

  • lol i think you just blew the song for me :)

    Certainly does resemble him.

  • Fantastic song. Every chord has this lovely flow to it. In which holy water did you dip that sitar?

    Keep.. flowing?

  • Dean Magraw Has the Most rock n Roll Like Playing (thats a Complement)

  • wow thats an interesting guitar

  • its an electric sitar made by jerry jones in nashville tennessee

  • dude it has a harp on it

    haha thats so cool

  • is that guitar lighting up..?

    or am i seeing things..haha

  • That are light hologram sticker... I thing;)

  • Very impressiv. Excellent work. That's all what to say

  • Freakin awesome...candy rat has the best musical talent out there today. I wanna meet the person who finds these guys.

  • I agree. Great musicians like these guys need to be brought back to the public eye and hopefully the lip-syncing phonies will fade away.

  • the base sounds are just too good!

  • i love the effect of the drone strings at 2:15

  • one of my all time favorite candy rat vids

  • im not familiar with the culture but i think its called a satir

  • I think this guy is probably the most versatile guitarist alive. He does an awesome job with any style, be it jazz, soul, Arabic (like this one), or basically anything. All I can say is Dean is the greatest

  • ive never seen someone play that guitar till now

  • He kind of Looks like Stalin...

  • Who gives a shit who he looks like? He kicks ass at guitar, and that's really all that matters

  • haha he does

  • did you see Stalin?! )))

  • This is an awesome song, the sitar did all it needed to do! 2:30 - 2:45 is cool.

  • i love your music

  • thats awesome playing

  • Beutiful Playing!

  • who gives a fuck wat it is? hes amazin!
