Black Sabbath certainly laid the way with their lyrical themes and downtuned guitars... who knew something done out of necessity would make such an impact?

Certainly, I think it's a fairly consistent adherence to a darker theme of lyrics, heavy distorted guitars, skilled musicians... beyond that, though... I mean... Mayhem vs Epica! What?

For me, this song is barely metal, I listen to everything from heavy/NWOBHM metal to death metal.

This just sounds like a mix between the soft side of Opeth and alternative rock. Again, barely metal. I still haven't listened enough to this band, though, I guess that for me it'd be worth a listen when I don't feel like listening to extreme metal.
