I remember wanting one of these as a kid after I saw it being demoed at a Montgomery Wards in Lake Charles. It was all I could talk about for weeks afterward.
You guys might find the new Crash Test Dummies album "Oooh la la" quite interesting. Lots of samples through the whole album with Optigan samples. Brad Roberts, the lead singer, thanked the inventor and artists who made the Optigan discs. Check it out on the Crash Test Dummies homepage. I think half of the songs use the Optigan at some point.
All very good stuff. Having one of each Optigan model and an Orchestron I can really appreciate hearing all of these!!
(I've gotten a little better clarity out of the Montgomery Wards model by the way.)
Interesting to hear the cello and violin masters. The cello sounds like Chamberlin or Birotron cello and the violin sounds like Mellotron. Anyway it's all interesting to hear. A bit of a revelation!.
Pea, I hope you win the rights to all the Optigan stuff. Looks like you have put in a ton of work keeping the interest alive & well. You deserve to own Optigan. BTW, I still am trying to figure out how to quiet down the motor on mine. I might send you an order for a new motor soon. Keep up the great work.
Wow. How in the world did you get access to the masters? Must have been fun to produce! Have to say however, to me a big part of the appeal of playing an optigon is the distorted, damaged sounds. It's fascinating to hear the source music so clearly.
I had on of those back in the early 1970's (I bought it at Sears) and loved it... yet, it got to the point that I needed more than the repetiyious discs. Then I baught the real thing - a Kimball Theatre Organ and loved it more! But it was the Optigan Organ that gor my taste buds for organ music and learning to play the organ. Thanks for the memories!
Is Mattel the English derivative of Mattias? (just kidding). I like the Orchestron disc versions better than the master tape versions...sounds a little Mellotronic or Chamberlinesque and not so sharp, pure and crisp. Kudos, Pea, for this video. The temptation is to stream the audio just as it is the full ten minutes & layer more music/percussion on it!
I think that every one of those optigan drum breaks is like a precious jewel. Its interesting to hear how much sparkle the 'clean' versions have. Nice work Pea.
Just beautiful! Thanks Pea for this cool demo video. The sounds from the master reels blew me away! I just started playing with IK's SampleTron and I'm ready to buy your Optigan DVD. Much thanks to you and Mattias for everything.
What's interesting is that on Pop Piano Plus Brasses, on the Optigan disc version the background just sounds like the standard scratchy record. But on the master tape you can hear that in the background, there's a brush going on a snare, which has a similar sound. The Optigan noise just masked it out!
The "Singing Rhythm" is prominent in the intro of Michael Penn's "Like Egypt Was". Fascinating stuff btw.

I dunno, but after 6:32, the tracks started to sound more and more creepy. Like listening to a Chorus of The Dead.

I love the Optigan. If I was rich I would buy one from Ebay. Its so sad that since the economy is so bad that I have to say if I was rich.
