In the interview she talks about the effort involved in learning French. She does an excellent job with the language, as she did with eveything. This was in 1956 when she was invited back to Hollywood after a seven-year absence to star in "Anastasia." I thought she was even better in "Goodbye Again," which was set in Paris. Tony Perkins played her young boyfriend in that film. Happy birthday, Ingrid, wherever you are!
I love how she can speak all those languages, Audrey Hepburn could speak loads too. Very awesome ladies, I LOVE hearing actresses speak other languages, well french, haha. It's such a nice old interview also.
i've been studying french for quite a long time. ingrid had a very strong accent in french, but she didn't do grammar mistakes. only one: une ville merveilleuse (not merveilleux like she said). oh, i admire her!!!
@glamfakir apparently it was in july 1957. i read it on the site of the archives of radio-canada (the channel for which this interview was done). she does look super young, but might be due to the quality of the video...
Way back in 1894, a little girl named Madeline Crothe was skipping through the woods when a mysterious man in black snatched her. He brought her to his house, tourtered her, and starved her to death. Send this to 6 videos in the next 30 min. and you will be safe, but if you don't... at approximately 1: 34 tonight you will wake up to see an aneorexic child holding a bloodied up knife and she will kill you" less sorry this scares
I'm 16 and I've been studying English for seven years now, and Spanish three. Next year I'll begin with French and maybe also Italian. So yes, I guess we have to learn many languages. ;)
gosh, she's fantastic! i've been learning french for 3 years now and can't pronounce a correct sentence in it :S it's soooo frustrating :) at least, I understand what she's saying, LOL!
she is one of the finest actresses of all time, no doubt about it! I adore her <3
Most Europeans speak several languages. Swedish actresses like Bergman are no exception.
For instance, my aunts here in Sweden don't have a lot of education and ended up as "simple" secretaries. They handle advanced business English and business German masterly.
When you go to university in Sweden - and in the other Nordic countries too - most of the literature is in English.
This competence is vital to our success in areas like business, international diplomacy, science etc.
True. I'm Dutch and most pupils here have to learn english and basic german and french. That's -like you said- very useful for business travelling etc. (; Plus it's simply polite and nice to adress someone in his/her own language.
What I admire so much about Ingrid is that she could not only speak five (!) languages, but she could ACT in them too!! That's amazing :D
I speak 2 languages other than English, and I'd love to learn at least one more.
I detest the xenophobic culture here and the laziness to learn other languages and cultures, but I detest more that people say its the kids' fault - it's also the primary schools for not pushing foreign languages. If they learn to love languages at an early age then it'll carry on into the future.
Je suis tout à fait d'accord avec toi! We need to be more aware of other languages and cultures and to learn more than one's own language can open up the world for us.
@brushstrokesrock clearly the most beautiful woman ever in existance. I agree, her accent is adorable! Shame she died so young... only 67! Damn cancer took away one person who really should have lived longer. Ingrid, may you grace the hearts of millions of people forever. I feel like I want to cry when i think of her death. Love you girl!
@brushstrokesrock swedish people often know many languages. we have to learn at least 2 foreign languages in school. we start with english at age 8 and we study language until we are 19 years old and some swedes will continue study language at university.
@airasweetie that's probably because very few people outside of Sweden speak Swedish so in order to travel and work abroad you must learn languages. The situation is completely different for English speaking people because there is a very big English speaking world (UK, USA, Australia, South Africa, NZ) plus many people speak it as a lingua franca.
@shahideurope we don´t need to be polite but does that mean we shouldn´t be polite?! It the same thing. Its also amazong for your brain to learn another language. It makes it work harder. We have amazing abilities, why not take advantage of that!
@airasweetie very poor comparison. We DO need to be polite and we can be polite in any language e.g. by smiling and nodding. As it happens I do speak more than one language but that is simply because I was fortunate to have parents who spoke a language that was not English. Ingrid Bergman was born in Sweden (hence Swedish), she was half German (hence German), she wanted to be an actress in Hollywood (hence English), she married an Italian (hence Italian). French I guess she learned at school.

Unfortunately most English/British people can't be included with the rest of Europe in this respect........probably we've become lazy
as a result of the ever increasing use of English Internationally!......

1. SWEDISH (of course)
2. GERMAN
3. ENGLISH (she's got one of the sexiest accents ever!)
4. ITALIAN
5. FRENCH
She's a vison! :-D
