Nice little tip. I was playing these inversions back in 1989 in White Trash(youtu.be/syo-AThtol4), but they didn't really sound as heavy then. Must be the pointy guitar he's using...:P
Interesting how he talks about inverted power chords here. Sabbath did this all the time, and Eric shows how it can be very effective by using the chorus riff to The Persecuted Won't Forget from 1:20 to 1:35. When I first heard the song, I thought that part almost had a diminished feel to it. It definitely makes it sound creepier when played with distortion.
Yeah, Testament, or Alex Skolnick had used Marshall Mode Four Heads, you know 100 Watt head and cabinets. That's the Testament Sound. the video sound and the head Eric is using isn't a Marshall head.
what is it? mesa think not engl ritchie blacmore i think,or maybe a 5152.it's a really wett sound you got to love this or not,i can't dislike this but i prefer this wihtout delay and with reverb but that's just taste, i think the delay makes it more wett in this case.
@jfkdjfd yeah indeed you could be right.now that i'm hearing it with ear plugs it sound allot nicer.i also think it's a peavey.this is his tone,i don't get his switch to emg,but since hes a rythm guitarist it wouldn't break his stuff emg's are good for rythm i can't stand them in leads.
yeah you could hear that on that album,i prefer duncans, overall better for solo they're awesome and rythm also while emg is to sharp in the solo and to much overtones while duncans are just awesome for bleusy stuff and everything else, try playing blues with emg's you'le end up sounding like zack wylde.
@jfkdjfd talking bout emg's those are mostly active.i understand active but i prefer passive due to the wider sound, active cuts it off in quitness emg's not nececarly do that but without pedals it sound i bit thin in the solos,a tube screamer is handy.i tryd out a jackson neck trought today with duncans awww damn hot really megdeth alike, and megadeth i like.i also love the emg tallica tone.
yeah me to i don't have much money but i'm trying to save some for a jackson desphite what people say i love them jacksons.i played trought sh8 for some time.i love them duncan but i'm okay with people that prefer emg's i don't cause i want a bleusy and melodic solo sound and less metall, but for those about to rock with emg's i salute you(cliche acdc song :p)
@Shyuum I think the guy meant that today the best thrash bands like Testament or Exodus are underrated certainly not that well known today. I know a lot of younger metal heads that have hardly heard of Testament cause thrash just doesn't get played even in metal / rock radio. Whereas even the crappiest power metal bands are well known. That's the case in Finland at least.
@KATZMANISGOD True Metalheads know who Eric is and are respecting him to very very very much. In my opinion one of the best rhythm guitar players and also a song writer out there!!!
@KATZMANISGOD Yes! Without a doubt, Eric is as good at rhythm as Alex is on lead...and Eric isn't half bad at leads either. But AFA rhythm goes, yeah, he's damn near flawless - right up there with Hetfield, Hanneman, and Mustaine. His right hand is a fucking machine!
@woodchuk123 Kerry King is a better rhythm player than Hanneman these days. If you watch Hanneman he will not plam mute the really fast Slayer songs anymore and King will. King is just simply better than Hanneman.
can anyone help me out, i just started teaching myself to play guitar and i'm learning single finger notes at the moment, do you slowly progress to using more fingers for the very same notes, whats the difference?
okay im gonna save you a bunch of confusion. the notes on each fret are always the same, no matter what finger your using to play them. chords get theyr name from the notes used in them. for example an E5(or e power chord) is made up of an E(open e string) a B(A string 2nd fret) and a 2nd E(D string 2nd fret) the name e5 comes from the root note(e) and the B which is 5 notes above the root note. hopefully that makes sense pm if you have a question
he's explaining some simple yet important metal "spice ups" one could add to his sound/riffs and that's great... But what happens when you have to solo over a progression where theory counts... (are you trying those shapes then? do you know when to put such a "shape"? What's the theory behind that....) Questions are adressed to the people commenting
this guy is a tool and knows nothing. such a waste of a video. seriously get Periphery on here or Animals As Leaders, you had Scale The Summit. I think it's about time to step it up. I could play all this guys shit the day I picked up a guitar.
this is a video on rhythm guitar not leads and sweep picking its not really for the advanced player its for people looking to learn more about and get used to rhythm guitar in metal
I realize this isn't a shred video. however they could at least get a guy that understands basic music theory enough to explain it better than (inverted power chords) which by any meaning should be perfect 4ths not fifths with the fifth in the bass.
@amaranthinagony the chords kind of speak for themselves, the theory isn't really that important. His co-guitarist Alex Skolnick would have been better at explaining that (jazz degree and all) but the column is for Eric. It was the same with Dave Mustaine and even paul Gilbert.
