Someday you really should review Stunt Island made in 1992 and published by Disney Interactive. It is awesome! Wikipedia says: "Stunt Island provides an island which contains a number of different sets. The player can position cameras and props around these sets, and create event triggers for things like camera pans and object movement. The game also has an editing mode where the player can splice together taped footage and insert sound effects. The game has a bias towards airplane stunts."
ooh i think this is it! god i've been looking for the version I played when I was 5, and I think i recognize the tiles on this. i also recall awesome oriental intro music, bu my tastes were cheap then, so this background music might qualify.
However: I had a mac. Was this game also for mac? Also i remember a background picture you would uncover.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned to you, but I just discovered that this game has a port on the Super Nintendo! Called Shanghai II: Dragon's Eye, or Super Shanghai.
It seems to have most of the same features, including that Dragon Eye feature (though it seems to be one player vs computer only), except for making your own tile boards. It even has the animal tiles and sound effects : )
I don't have anything against these tile-matching games, but PLEASE don't call it Mahjong. The tiles are the only thing that the two have in common. If you use a Tennis ball when you're playing fetch with your dog, that doesn't mean you're playing Tennis.
I have actually beaten the computer at Dragon's Eye. It was a long time ago, but the 6 core tiles have gray backgrounds while the two heart tiles are dark gray. Also, you don't need to lay down the tile to remove them. That might help you to defeat it. :)
@TheLogicman1 I use a few methods... if it's a game at 640x480 or higher at ~30fps, I use video output on the PC itself. This is either composite or S-video built into the video card. 1:59-2:07 is an example of this. Otherwise, I use a VGA scanline converter, which converts VGA signals to S-video.
Alternately I just use DosBox emulated to as close as possible to the original machine when the others fail, running them side-by-side for comparison when capturing. Most gameplay shown here is DosBox
Great review. I also love mahjong and played it sometimes & many times. I had fun mahjong game called Shanghai 2-Dragon's Eye. It was great game.
Man that one great manual. History of the game & tiles. Awesome. Too bad they don't make manual like that anymore. Well at least they didn't do that on the PS2 games.
As a big fan of mahjong, I have to say that I truly loathe these mahjong solitaire games, mostly because, other than the tiles, they really have almost nothing to do with the ancient and traditional game. The PC games market is swamped with stuff like this, and the real game is hardly ever to be found.
I remember first playing Mahjong on a romanian zx spectrum clone called hc 2000. That was really an out of place machine, coming out as late as '92, and it had support for a 3.5 floppy. You had to control the cursor with the arrow keys, it was quite magic at the time for me.
Nice review, but..eh...Mahjong games have been done to death, especially since the Bigfish & Co types started to catch on. I couldn't really see anything special about one, even if, at the time, it was a unique concept. It's sort of like tetris: its history is quite fascinating, there were a few lawsuits concerning its first ports, but you still wonder at some level what the big deal was...it's just tetris. You can hit T in utorrent's about menu and play it.
@Fuzzy192006 Yup, cheating when impatient is a great way to get some quickie footage... I call it "lazy" for a reason!
And yes, mahjong has been done to death but the advantage with Shanghai II is it's on DOS and that's what I want. It's excellent and is the best for DOS I've played. If you don't care about the DOS platform it doesn't matter and it's really just another mahjong game at that point, but for mahjong solitaire on various color DOS machines it's superb.
@indignantatheist Mahjong Titans isn't bad for a quick pick up and play if you've not got DosBox open, but I still prefer Shanghai II. It just has more features that I prefer and, IMO, better tile sets.
You know what I like with you LGR is that you have a better perspective on reviewing games, and you are one of the very few who review PC Games. The other reviews on youtube focus more on nintendo and sega.
@alanw3000 Well thank you. That's awesome because that is what I strive to be... enjoyably different and refreshing. Like a weird new soda that's a bit off at first but you come to know, love and crave.
great video as usual, but i would like to add that amongst all the useless gimmicks that typical mahjong games have, there's one that never wears out..yeah,i'm talking about those naughty mahjong games found in arcades where ,upon completion of the board, you're rewarded with a pic of a scantily clad(and badly digtized)girl of your choice...

I have a question, how do you record these videos on such old computers? Is the screen recorder your using supported by them?
