@chosentonessournotes What I think he thought was that since he had the strategy guide, it said to hold the red shell while holding down so that after you fell through, you could run into the green turtle on the ground while holding the shell to prevent taking damage. I think he misinterpreted it as meaning that you had to hold the shell in order to actually fall through the block.

Mario 3 has only two flaws: 99% of the hidden levels just have shitty coins in them, and when the screen is scrolling down you can't see what's under you, even if you're tail-gliding.  If those two flaws were fixed, the game would literally be perfect.
