  • he's singing the song from a third person perspective while in a mental ward, He is so depresed because his girl has killed herself and he keeps seeing her vision , He is trying to get past his grief , in the mean while he wears the uniform of the hospitl ward and they stay up late, but they better stand p straight.

  • The 10 minute version of this song from that album is soooo good, I totally agree

  • so true

  • This is the first song on the first and best Counting Crows album for a reason. This song defines their entire career...easily the best song written by them and one of the greatest songs of the 1990s.

  • i so agree!!!!

  • u hit it right on the head man

  • Todays popular music is art just as good as this. Music today is just less varied and with fewer styles. You can't compare bananas and apples.

  • i love the salvador dali references in the video

  • Great song, really gets into Your mind.

Like a magical poem I never get tired of hearing it.

  • This is DEEP. Like, seriously, it even makes a jerk-face friend stop and listen and consider himself, amongst other things.

  • this is the first time i heard about them, dont get excited, i listen to Hip-Hop mostly, but i saw a friends comment about this song on fb so i checked them out. I really like the song's concept.

  • unbelievable group, If youve never seen them live i highly highly recomend it. Their stage presence and music puts you in such a music high that no drug could ever do to you its a great feeling that you just never want to end. Thanks crows for doing what you guys do!

  • love him 2 bits

  • absolute brilliance

  • did anyone else here the line form the Gaslight anthem song. "she came from nashvile with a suitcase in her hand, she wants to meet a boy who looks like elvis"

  • Yes. She came from Nashville (where boy's who like like Elvis abound) with a suitcase in her hand. To me, symolic of knowing the need for a change, but unable to let go of the safety of familiarity. Otherwise, Maria would have stayed in Nashville, it's easy to find a boy who looks like Elvis.

  • Actually the line comes from here, Gaslight Anthem took it.

  • yea i know that they came from somewhere else. just did not know it was counting crows

  • This is loveley but I prefer Panics cover.

Maybe because I'm a panic fan or maybe because I prefer louder music with lots of different notes.I don't know. But overall this song is beautiful.

  • This is the only song in this world that still makes me happy to be alive. Because If I were dead, I wouldn't be able to hear it anymore. :[

  • I agree with gemcool 16..... from Italy.

    ;->))

  • love that face.

  • its sad people have to argue and snipe at each other, just appreciate the music and stop hating each other.

    beautiful song

  • So much emotion comes through this man's voice.

  • I love this song, picks me up whenever I am feeling down...

  • This is an emotional song, it describes my darkest hours with my family (as we all do look the same, we stand up straight, and we stay up very, very, very late). Will you catch me when I'm falling? Obviously not, my father was "under the Gun" and he eventually used it, on himself.

  • haha i fuckin agree mate xD

    genius right there.

i hate all the mad internet freaks crying over the internet, its something to laugh at though xD

  • wow this song brings back memories of my teanage years in the mountains of colorado. best band ever:D)

  • I'm an old friend of Adams and Daves. Hey Somba, S.C. (settle, chill) This comment window is just FOR that. Gives us all a chance to share and relate to some DAMN GOOD music! The cliche is old and dusty but 'Life is WAY too short !' Kick back and enjoy some heartfelt, soul searching tunes which I will connect with for one Hell of along time. "Hey Boys !" Patrick O

  • i love when people argue on the internet about the most trivial of issues. Get off your computers and pick up a fucking book.

  • way to be an elitist dick head.

  • Dr. Mr. Fingerspear, with your obvious intelligence quota, I suggest you see someone to diagnosis your developmentally disabled condition. I do not believe you should be using a computer. In case you have not heard, this is America, "Freedom of Speech" is included in the constituion. This is a forum for thoughts, comments, and analysis of music. Obviously, these are concepts that you do not grasp. (to be continued).

  • As far as a physciatrist (I don't want to see a shrink as my BMI is exactly where it should be), I believe you would be a candidate for the following diagnoses: Anger Management, Personality Disorder, Opitional Defiance Disorder, and maybe a little Schizophrenia. Is this drug induced or inherited?

  • Yes, my comment does seem to come off as pretentious. But I just get so annoyed with pointless comments about if this song is "emo" or all the other bullshit people spew. And "picking up a fucking book" just seemed like something more productive than the mindless banter I see before me. Go jerk off to internet porn, or walk your dog, or fucking do anything other than go back and forth about stupid shit that is completely irrelevant.

  • Actually, I agree. Maybe if you would educate yourself through some good books your vocabulary will improve. I would suggest something simple, like "Of Mice and Men", not too challenging, but just enough based on your comments. There you may learn something about "emotions" a basic human element that you seem to be lacking. If not, get off the board and go join one of your local "hate" clubs to disperse all that negative energy. You might want to stop attacking people personally, too.

  • Yes, I noticed my mis-sspelling, I was just waiting to see how long it took you to look it up in the dictionary (or should I say the "internet"). I knew you would not be able to navigate the "guide pages" you have probably been dickering around until you found the proper spelling. As far as freedom of speech, this does not allow you carte' blanche expression. You must respect society, but I do not expect you to understand that people must live together.

  • message me if you would like me to email you the bands blog about the meaning of the song and them asking for bands to stop covering it

  • you all need to sut up. i just found out the meaning of this song and i can understand why people say its emo. the lead singer who WROTE the song said its one of thier darkest songs and he wrote it at a very emotional time and took it affensivly that a underground band in there home town did a cover on it and it pissed him off a grate deal since the band and oviously none of you could ever really understand the emotion behind the song unless you are going through whatever he was going through...

  • 1. Learn to spell.

    2. I agree with you.

  • im jamaican.. sorry about my spelling. i try hard

  • i thot this song was aprt a girl who is awkward & weird but beautiful at the same time.

  • GOD I LOVE THE ORGAN PLAYER FROM THIS BAND!!! Always been a fan since '93. Eat your mom's heart out Kanye!

  • emo ? the counting crows . you dont know jack shit about music if you think that!! this band are the dogs balls dude!!

  • alright so idk who said this is emo...but, it's not. think what you think. hell yeah this has a LOT of emotions in it, but it's not "emo." that's such an overused term. if you check out the crows you'll find EVEN MORE emotion...adam duritz is pretty effed up and writes about it in most of his songs, which can be very depressing. hell, I am too, that's another reason why I love these awesome musicians and this AWESOME singer/lyricist, but no this is not emo. sorry for rambling. rock on CC!

  • I agree with you. As with all art, it is nothing without emotions. The artist is expressing his emotions and allowing us to use our perception of his art to validate our emotions. That is what art is, and music is an art. As a card-carrying "clinically" depressed person, I embrance this part of being depressed. Sensitivity to what is going on around us is what makes me different. If I can attach my own schemta to a song, then so be it. From these posts, I see what is wrong with the world.

  • You are one amongst few who have taken the red pill.

  • stupendaaaaaaaaaaaaa love Countng Crows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome song, but for some reason, it depresses the hell out of me

  • One of the Crows' best songs.

And Counting Crows is the best band ever, so that says quite a lot.

  • can someone explain what this song means exactly?

  • theres a discription about what the songs means in the top right hand corner, click on more info :)

  • One of my favorites by Counting Crows.

  • bellissima...

  • Awesome lyrics, one of, if not the best crows song

  • good song, even though its emo

  • No its not emo. Counting crows isn't emo, counting crows is original and lamentative. Emo bands pay tribute to them, yes - But so do MANY OTHER bands ...

  • i think a songs emo if its trying to be sad and depressing just for the sake of being sad and depressing, but i think this song has more meaning to it than just a sad song, these lyrics are deep

i dont know if that makes any sense at all haha, but i dont this is emo

  • Jacolyn has a big p3nis :]

  • Great song ever, I wouldnt touch the lirycs with my soul the way he does

  • he's so good at speaking about his songs. thanks for the quote dude. rock on Counting Crows!!! Beast music/lyrics.

  • one of the strongest songs of ive ever heard. it makes you really think.

    i love it

  • this is such a powerful song !

  • such a great and powerful song......don't know about you, but everytime i hear this, it hits me like a punch in the face........it brings back sooooooooooo many memories............peace.....brian....

  • i hear ya man. kinda like wake up and smell the coffee. whats all this all about.

  • its also the same with every song that has made its history. we wish for that style to come back but its all faded and can never become the same again

  • She said SHHHH!!!

    it's only in my head...

  • Try singing this by the lyrics, or in karaoke. Surprisingly tough song.

  • I have, and its not that hard.

Not karaoke though, for an actual performance.

It gives you a wonderful feeling to sing though <3

this and colorblind are the best songs in existence.

  • This reminds of a man named Sean Condie.

  • ...catch me if I'm falling.....

  • Seems were all under the, over governmental controllium gun round here, these days!

RarrRR! Speak out, voice your opinion, join your dity council or something and make some good positive change! Geeez.... Run for president,it seems anyone can these days!

  • " Would you catch me if I'm falling!!! "

My best part.. the guy runs as if he's trying to catch her.. heart warming with shiver all over my body..

  • I always loved this song...Reminds me of all the cranksters in my neighbohood who are fading away....

  • counting crows is an awesome band .. but there style has fade away. due to gay ghetto shit music

  • UConn08 is right its the same for everything music is losing its soul it doesn't have the same meaning give me crap if you want but its true

  • umm they had an album last year

  • I truly don't understand why they don't have more recent music out. They're lyrically amazing.

  • This is a soul stuck in time.Has anyone been the man crucified by the clocks

  • "Can't you see my walls are crumbling..."

For me it was the best part.

  • Brilliant Song & Album...................

  • epic song, really makes you think about things and where wer are in this world

  • Comment removed

  • I've listened to it, but I deffinately likes the video. It sort of seems like more than one story and explaination. It's about a million lost people. Losing themselves.

  • absolutely most amazing song writing i ever heard...if u listen to it without watching the video it really makes you think about life

  • One of the greatest songs ever written. Brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for the post.

  • this song is deff a fav, I like the song better than the vid though, it kinda takes away the power.

  • My favorite song ever!!

    I love video too!!

    So sad...

  • Honestly I would just rather close my eyes and listen to the music than watch this video. It seems to lose something with the visual noise.

...love the drum fill @ 3:25

  • I agree! the song has such good imagery and the the video is nothing like the story line i imagined

  • I envy his dreads.

  • Es mi cancion preferida de los counting crows, no se lo que dice su letra pero no importa, la musica esta alucinante!

  • Its funny if you go to that desert today there would be no one there.

  • he's kinda cute :) this song is so deep x

  • can someone give me the god to honest truth about this song i have heard peopls exsplantion and i have mine but does anyone knoe the truth to be honest i think its about her falling apart on the edge trying to live with this pain but in a way adams talking about his self did you know adam has a mental disorder he got from lsd where he goes in deep depession and then back to happy thats why he only wrote 5 albums he puts out one when hes happy, but he writes all the time he just doesnt like em

  • this is an amazing song

  • one of my very favorite songz ever! wow... who can't relate to this?!?!? lovez it xoxo

  • yes...."august and everything after".....my fave album ever.......B

  • its been a 5 years , i fell into their harmonies and i am still struggling to ease my pain !...

    thats just great !....

  • few songs are great this is truly a great song

  • They were on SNL in 1993-94 and they sang this song LIVE and I was Trippin balls and I just became this song...if anyone ever takes a hit make sure you listen to this song!

  • This song is truly deep. when they say "we talk like lions but sacerfice like lambs" I'm sure he means we talk big and powerful but we sit there and do as others tell us. So in the end who really has the power? Maria said its all in her head but I think everyone feels like this if they relize it or not. Or if their just hiding the fact. Maria's sad because everything around seems to stay the same yet eveerythings falling apart. Make sense?

  • So true..

  • Yes, it does. The alter-ego (Maria) is actually honest about her emotions, transparency. When we "Talk like lions" it is just to try to cover our transparency, but, alas, it always fails. I know I have trouble acting "normal" (whatever that is) when I'm nervous, I believe everyone does. The lyrics do have many layers and underlying meanings, we will never know these magnificent lyrics became; nonetheless it is obvious that there is conflict within ourselves. It is a call for empathy.

  • Adam Duritz is too complicated to fit into any category except one. He fits perfectly into this one. - - - - - - ICONIC - - - - - - - -

  • This song is so strangely beautiful <3

  • August 1st in Houston.........yeah baby !

  • I saw them two days ago. It was really good.

  • Simply Amazing

  • also,

whats up with Maria in his songs??? girlfriend, wife, loved one that died, or just an every day person...

  • According to Duritz, she's fictional. I'm pretty sure the only fictional person he writes about.

"She's just an idea of someone I came up with when I was writing 'Round Here.' I mean, she's me. It's through the eyes of a girl, but it's someone very much like me struggling at the edge, not sure if she's going to fall off on one side or the other. It's a theme that's stuck through songs. So she keeps popping up." --Adam Duritz on 'maria'

  • thank you so much for clearing that up for me

when i listen to his songs i kept hearing "maria" in all of them and i didn't get so thanks

    :)

  • So the "maria" mystery is solved! FINALLY!! I was starting to get jealous of her.

  • if you read about it on wikipedia it says that maia is him someone he started in this song and he just keeps on building her, its him as a girl

  • love this song

i don't know how to react to it sad happy none

i've listened to this song so many times and i still don't get it but it's an AMAZING song love the crows

  • i also saw him at a halloween store in myrtle beach, s.c when i was younger

  • ima go see his concert yay XD

  • Me too!! Going in August to see them in Charlotte! WooHoo!

  • Why does this song make me think of a haunting medi-vac in Viet Nam of a first-rate joe? :(
