he's singing the song from a third person perspective while in a mental ward, He is so depresed because his girl has killed herself and he keeps seeing her vision , He is trying to get past his grief , in the mean while he wears the uniform of the hospitl ward and they stay up late, but they better stand p straight.

This is the first song on the first and best Counting Crows album for a reason. This song defines their entire career...easily the best song written by them and one of the greatest songs of the 1990s.
a time in music where creativity reigned.great music like this has taken a back seat to shock lyrics..now you have people like little wayne and solder boi singing about bitches and clubs being worshiped like gods.what a discrace
me and my dad always listen to counting crows music in hes truck when i was a kid those where the great days he has a hard time seeing sometimes but i still love my dad with all my heart
this is the first time i heard about them, dont get excited, i listen to Hip-Hop mostly, but i saw a friends comment about this song on fb so i checked them out. I really like the song's concept.
unbelievable group, If youve never seen them live i highly highly recomend it. Their stage presence and music puts you in such a music high that no drug could ever do to you its a great feeling that you just never want to end. Thanks crows for doing what you guys do!
did anyone else here the line form the Gaslight anthem song. "she came from nashvile with a suitcase in her hand, she wants to meet a boy who looks like elvis"
Yes. She came from Nashville (where boy's who like like Elvis abound) with a suitcase in her hand. To me, symolic of knowing the need for a change, but unable to let go of the safety of familiarity. Otherwise, Maria would have stayed in Nashville, it's easy to find a boy who looks like Elvis.
This is an emotional song, it describes my darkest hours with my family (as we all do look the same, we stand up straight, and we stay up very, very, very late). Will you catch me when I'm falling? Obviously not, my father was "under the Gun" and he eventually used it, on himself.
I'm an old friend of Adams and Daves. Hey Somba, S.C. (settle, chill) This comment window is just FOR that. Gives us all a chance to share and relate to some DAMN GOOD music! The cliche is old and dusty but 'Life is WAY too short !' Kick back and enjoy some heartfelt, soul searching tunes which I will connect with for one Hell of along time. "Hey Boys !" Patrick O

Yes, my comment does seem to come off as pretentious. But I just get so annoyed with pointless comments about if this song is "emo" or all the other bullshit people spew. And "picking up a fucking book" just seemed like something more productive than the mindless banter I see before me. Go jerk off to internet porn, or walk your dog, or fucking do anything other than go back and forth about stupid shit that is completely irrelevant.
Actually, I agree. Maybe if you would educate yourself through some good books your vocabulary will improve. I would suggest something simple, like "Of Mice and Men", not too challenging, but just enough based on your comments. There you may learn something about "emotions" a basic human element that you seem to be lacking. If not, get off the board and go join one of your local "hate" clubs to disperse all that negative energy. You might want to stop attacking people personally, too.
LOL! You are the biggest faggot on the internet. It's 'psychiatrist' you retard. Not 'physciatrist.'
You're a faggot! I'm ashamed you've even heard of 'Of Mice and Men.' And this isn't America you fucktard, it's the internet. A non-existant state. Personality Disorder isn't a fucking thing you idiot. It's a classification of a SET of disorders.
Yes, I noticed my mis-sspelling, I was just waiting to see how long it took you to look it up in the dictionary (or should I say the "internet"). I knew you would not be able to navigate the "guide pages" you have probably been dickering around until you found the proper spelling. As far as freedom of speech, this does not allow you carte' blanche expression. You must respect society, but I do not expect you to understand that people must live together.
you all need to sut up. i just found out the meaning of this song and i can understand why people say its emo. the lead singer who WROTE the song said its one of thier darkest songs and he wrote it at a very emotional time and took it affensivly that a underground band in there home town did a cover on it and it pissed him off a grate deal since the band and oviously none of you could ever really understand the emotion behind the song unless you are going through whatever he was going through...
alright so idk who said this is emo...but, it's not. think what you think. hell yeah this has a LOT of emotions in it, but it's not "emo." that's such an overused term. if you check out the crows you'll find EVEN MORE emotion...adam duritz is pretty effed up and writes about it in most of his songs, which can be very depressing. hell, I am too, that's another reason why I love these awesome musicians and this AWESOME singer/lyricist, but no this is not emo. sorry for rambling. rock on CC!
I agree with you. As with all art, it is nothing without emotions. The artist is expressing his emotions and allowing us to use our perception of his art to validate our emotions. That is what art is, and music is an art. As a card-carrying "clinically" depressed person, I embrance this part of being depressed. Sensitivity to what is going on around us is what makes me different. If I can attach my own schemta to a song, then so be it. From these posts, I see what is wrong with the world.
No its not emo. Counting crows isn't emo, counting crows is original and lamentative. Emo bands pay tribute to them, yes - But so do MANY OTHER bands ...
i think a songs emo if its trying to be sad and depressing just for the sake of being sad and depressing, but i think this song has more meaning to it than just a sad song, these lyrics are deep
i dont know if that makes any sense at all haha, but i dont this is emo
such a great and powerful song......don't know about you, but everytime i hear this, it hits me like a punch in the face........it brings back sooooooooooo many memories............peace.....brian....
its also the same with every song that has made its history. we wish for that style to come back but its all faded and can never become the same again
Seems were all under the, over governmental controllium gun round here, these days!
RarrRR! Speak out, voice your opinion, join your dity council or something and make some good positive change! Geeez.... Run for president,it seems anyone can these days!
I've listened to it, but I deffinately likes the video. It sort of seems like more than one story and explaination. It's about a million lost people. Losing themselves.
can someone give me the god to honest truth about this song i have heard peopls exsplantion and i have mine but does anyone knoe the truth to be honest i think its about her falling apart on the edge trying to live with this pain but in a way adams talking about his self did you know adam has a mental disorder he got from lsd where he goes in deep depession and then back to happy thats why he only wrote 5 albums he puts out one when hes happy, but he writes all the time he just doesnt like em
the best..we always stand up straight dont we.. <3 She has trouble acting normal when shes nervous..aint that the truth..I can relate to Maria big time..
They were on SNL in 1993-94 and they sang this song LIVE and I was Trippin balls and I just became this song...if anyone ever takes a hit make sure you listen to this song!
This song is truly deep. when they say "we talk like lions but sacerfice like lambs" I'm sure he means we talk big and powerful but we sit there and do as others tell us. So in the end who really has the power? Maria said its all in her head but I think everyone feels like this if they relize it or not. Or if their just hiding the fact. Maria's sad because everything around seems to stay the same yet eveerythings falling apart. Make sense?
Yes, it does. The alter-ego (Maria) is actually honest about her emotions, transparency. When we "Talk like lions" it is just to try to cover our transparency, but, alas, it always fails. I know I have trouble acting "normal" (whatever that is) when I'm nervous, I believe everyone does. The lyrics do have many layers and underlying meanings, we will never know these magnificent lyrics became; nonetheless it is obvious that there is conflict within ourselves. It is a call for empathy.
According to Duritz, she's fictional. I'm pretty sure the only fictional person he writes about.
"She's just an idea of someone I came up with when I was writing 'Round Here.' I mean, she's me. It's through the eyes of a girl, but it's someone very much like me struggling at the edge, not sure if she's going to fall off on one side or the other. It's a theme that's stuck through songs. So she keeps popping up." --Adam Duritz on 'maria'
he's singing the song from a third person perspective while in a mental ward, He is so depresed because his girl has killed herself and he keeps seeing her vision , He is trying to get past his grief , in the mean while he wears the uniform of the hospitl ward and they stay up late, but they better stand p straight.

...love the drum fill @ 3:25

This song is truly deep. when they say "we talk like lions but sacerfice like lambs" I'm sure he means we talk big and powerful but we sit there and do as others tell us. So in the end who really has the power? Maria said its all in her head but I think everyone feels like this if they relize it or not. Or if their just hiding the fact. Maria's sad because everything around seems to stay the same yet eveerythings falling apart. Make sense?

So true..
parallellepipedum91 2 years ago 2
Yes, it does. The alter-ego (Maria) is actually honest about her emotions, transparency. When we "Talk like lions" it is just to try to cover our transparency, but, alas, it always fails. I know I have trouble acting "normal" (whatever that is) when I'm nervous, I believe everyone does. The lyrics do have many layers and underlying meanings, we will never know these magnificent lyrics became; nonetheless it is obvious that there is conflict within ourselves. It is a call for empathy.

Adam Duritz is too complicated to fit into any category except one. He fits perfectly into this one. - - - - - - ICONIC - - - - - - - -

also,
whats up with Maria in his songs??? girlfriend, wife, loved one that died, or just an every day person...
slowmatt321 2 years ago 2
According to Duritz, she's fictional. I'm pretty sure the only fictional person he writes about.
"She's just an idea of someone I came up with when I was writing 'Round Here.' I mean, she's me. It's through the eyes of a girl, but it's someone very much like me struggling at the edge, not sure if she's going to fall off on one side or the other. It's a theme that's stuck through songs. So she keeps popping up." --Adam Duritz on 'maria'
